श्लोकः
अर्जुन उवाच
मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम् ।
यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन मोहोऽयं विगतो मम ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning
अर्जुनः उवाच — Arjuna said; मत्-अनुग्रहाय — just to show me favor; परमम् — supreme; गुह्यम् — confidential subject; अध्यात्म — spiritual; संज्ञितम् — in the matter of; यत् — what; त्वया — by You; उक्तम् — said; वचः — words; तेन — by that; मोहः — illusion; अयम् — this; विगतः — is removed; मम — my.

Translation
Arjuna said: By my hearing the instructions You have kindly given me about these most confidential spiritual subjects, my illusion has now been dispelled.

श्लोकः
भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां श्रुतौ विस्तरशो मया ।
त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यमपि चाव्ययम् ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning
भव — appearance; अप्ययौ — disappearance; हि — certainly; भूतानाम् — of all living entities; श्रुतौ — have been heard; विस्तरशः — in detail; मया — by me; त्वत्तः — from You; कमल-पत्र-अक्ष — O lotus-eyed one; माहात्म्यम् — glories; अपि — also; च — and; अव्ययम् — inexhaustible.

Translation
O lotus-eyed one, I have heard from You in detail about the appearance and disappearance of every living entity and have realized Your inexhaustible glories.

श्लोकः
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं पुरुषोत्तम ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning
एवम् — thus; एतत् — this; यथा — as it is; आत्थ — have spoken; त्वम् — You; आत्मानम् — Yourself; परम-ईश्वर — O Supreme Lord; द्रष्टुम् — to see; इच्चामि — I wish; ते — Your; रूपम् — form; ऐश्वरम् — divine; पुरुष-उत्तम — O best of personalities.

Translation
O greatest of all personalities, O supreme form, though I see You here before me in Your actual position, as You have described Yourself, I wish to see how You have entered into this cosmic manifestation. I want to see that form of Yours.

श्लोकः
मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो ।
योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम् ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning
मन्यसे — You think; यदि — if; तत् — that; शक्यम् — is able; मया — by me; द्रष्टुम् — to be seen; इति — thus; प्रभो — O Lord; योग-ईश्वर — O Lord of all mystic power; ततः — then; मे — unto me; त्वम् — You; दर्शय — show; आत्मानम् — Your Self; अव्ययम् — eternal.

Translation
If You think that I am able to behold Your cosmic form, O my Lord, O master of all mystic power, then kindly show me that unlimited universal Self.

श्लोकः
श्रीभगवानुवाच
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; पश्य — just see; मे — My; पार्थ — O son of Prithā; रूपाणि — forms; शतशः — hundreds; अथ — also; सहस्रशः — thousands; नाना-विधानि — variegated; दिव्यानि — divine; नाना — variegated; वर्ण — colors; आकृतीनि — forms; च — also.

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, O son of Prithā, see now My opulences, hundreds of thousands of varied divine and multicolored forms.

श्लोकः
पश्यादित्यान्वसून्‍रुद्रानश्विनौ मरुतस्तथा ।
बहून्यदृष्टपूर्वाणि पश्याश्चर्याणि भारत ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning
पश्य — see; आदित्यान् — the twelve sons of Aditi; वसून् — the eight Vasus; रुद्रान् — the eleven forms of Rudra; अश्विनौ — the two Aśvinīs; मरुतः — the forty-nine Maruts (demigods of the wind); तथा — also; बहूनि — many; अदृष्ट — that you have not seen; पूर्वाणि — before; पश्य — see; आश्चर्याणि — all the wonders; भारत — O best of the Bhāratas.

Translation
O best of the Bhāratas, see here the different manifestations of Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Aśvinī-kumāras and all the other demigods. Behold the many wonderful things which no one has ever seen or heard of before.

श्लोकः
इहैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं पश्याद्य सचराचरम् ।
मम देहे गुडाकेश यच्च‍आन्यद्‍द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥ 7 ॥

Meaning
इह — in this; एक-स्थम् — in one place; जगत् — the universe; कृत्स्नम् — completely; पश्य — see; अद्य — immediately; स — with; चर — the moving; अचरम् — and not moving; मम — My; देहे — in this body; गुडाकेश — O Arjuna; यत् — that which; च — also; अन्यत् — other; द्रष्टुम् — to see; इच्चसि — you wish.

Translation
O Arjuna, whatever you wish to see, behold at once in this body of Mine! This universal form can show you whatever you now desire to see and whatever you may want to see in the future. Everything – moving and nonmoving – is here completely, in one place.

श्लोकः
न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा ।
दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning
न — never; तु — but; माम् — Me; शक्यसे — are able; द्रष्टुम् — to see; अनेन — with these; एव — certainly; स्व-चक्षुषा — your own eyes; दिव्यम् — divine; ददामि — I give; ते — to you; चक्षुः — eyes; पश्य — see; मे — My; योगं ऐश्वरम् — inconceivable mystic power.

Translation
But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore I give you divine eyes. Behold My mystic opulence!

श्लोकः
संजय उवाच
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्महायोगेश्वरो हरिः ।
दर्शयामास पार्थाय परमं रूपमैश्वरम् ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning
संजयः उवाच — Sañjaya said; एवम् — thus; उक्त्वा — saying; ततः — thereafter; राजन् — O King; महा-योग-ईश्वरः — the most powerful mystic; हरिः — the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa; दर्शयां आस — showed; पार्थाय — unto Arjuna; परमम् — the divine; रूपं ऐश्वरम् — universal form.

Translation
Sañjaya said: O King, having spoken thus, the Supreme Lord of all mystic power, the Personality of Godhead, displayed His universal form to Arjuna.

श्लोकः
अनेकवक्‍त्रनयनमनेकाद्भ‍उतदर्शनम् ।
अनेकदिव्याभरणं दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम् ॥ 10 ॥
दिव्यमाल्यांबरधरं दिव्यगंधानुलेपनम् ।
सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवमनंतं विश्वतोमुखम् ॥ 11 ॥

Meaning
अनेक — various; वक्त्र — mouths; नयनम् — eyes; अनेक — various; अद्भुत — wonderful; दर्शनम् — sights; अनेक — many; दिव्य — divine; आभरणम् — ornaments; दिव्य — divine; अनेक — various; उद्यत — uplifted; आयुधम् — weapons; दिव्य — divine; माल्य — garlands; अंबर — dresses; धरम् — wearing; दिव्य — divine; गंध — fragrances; अनुलेपनम् — smeared with; सर्व — all; आश्चर्य-मयम् — wonderful; देवम् — shining; अनंतम् — unlimited; विश्वतः-मुखम् — all-pervading.

Translation
Arjuna saw in that universal form unlimited mouths, unlimited eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. The form was decorated with many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons. He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.

श्लोकः
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता ।
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भ‍आसस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥ 12 ॥

Meaning
दिवि — in the sky; सूर्य — of suns; सहस्रस्य — of many thousands; भवेत् — there were; युगपत् — simultaneously; उत्थिता — present; यदि — if; भाः — light; सदृशी — like that; सा — that; स्यात् — might be; भासः — effulgence; तस्य — of Him; महा-आत्मनः — the great Lord.

Translation
If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form.

श्लोकः
तत्रैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं प्रविभक्तमनेकधा ।
अपश्यद्देवदेवस्य शरीरे पांडवस्तदा ॥ 13 ॥

Meaning
तत्र — there; एक-स्थम् — in one place; जगत् — the universe; कृत्स्नम् — complete; प्रविभक्तम् — divided; अनेकधा — into many; अपश्यत् — could see; देव-देवस्य — of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; शरीरे — in the universal form; पांडवः — Arjuna; तदा — at that time.

Translation
At that time Arjuna could see in the universal form of the Lord the unlimited expansions of the universe situated in one place although divided into many, many thousands.

श्लोकः
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो हृष्टरोमा धनंजयः ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं कृतांजलिरभाषत ॥ 14 ॥

Meaning
ततः — thereafter; सः — he; विस्मय-आविष्टः — being overwhelmed with wonder; हृष्ट-रोमा — with his bodily hairs standing on end due to his great ecstasy; धनम्-जयः — Arjuna; प्रणम्य — offering obeisances; शिरसा — with the head; देवम् — to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; कृत-अंजलिः — with folded hands; अभाषत — began to speak.

Translation
Then, bewildered and astonished, his hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed his head to offer obeisances and with folded hands began to pray to the Supreme Lord.

श्लोकः
अर्जुन उवाच
पश्यामि देवांस्तव देव देहे
सर्वांस्तथा भूतविशेषसंघान् ।
ब्रह्माणमीशं कमलासनस्थ-
मृषींश्च सर्वानुरगांश्च दिव्यान् ॥ 15 ॥

Meaning
अर्जुनः उवाच — Arjuna said; पश्यामि — I see; देवान् — all the demigods; तव — Your; देव — O Lord; देहे — in the body; सर्वान् — all; तथा — also; भूत — living entities; विशेष-संघान् — specifically assembled; ब्रह्माणम् — Lord Brahmā; ईशम् — Lord Śiva; कमल-आसन-स्थम् — sitting on the lotus flower; ऋषीन् — great sages; च — also; सर्वान् — all; उरगान् — serpents; च — also; दिव्यान् — divine.

Translation
Arjuna said: My dear Lord Kriṣṇa, I see assembled in Your body all the demigods and various other living entities. I see Brahmā sitting on the lotus flower, as well as Lord Śiva and all the sages and divine serpents.

श्लोकः
अनेकबाहूदरवक्‍त्रनेत्रं
पश्यामि त्वां सर्वतोऽनंतरूपम् ।
नांतं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं
पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप ॥ 16 ॥

Meaning
अनेक — many; बाहु — arms; उदर — bellies; वक्त्र — mouths; नेत्रम् — eyes; पश्यामि — I see; त्वाम् — You; सर्वतः — on all sides; अनंत-रूपम् — unlimited form; न अंतम् — no end; न मध्यम् — no middle; न पुनः — nor again; तव — Your; आदिम् — beginning; पश्यामि — I see; विश्व-ईश्वर — O Lord of the universe; विश्व-रूप — in the form of the universe.

Translation
O Lord of the universe, O universal form, I see in Your body many, many arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, expanded everywhere, without limit. I see in You no end, no middle and no beginning.

श्लोकः
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रिणं च
तेजोराशिं सर्वतो दीप्‍तिमंतम् ।
पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यं समंता-
द्दीप्‍तानलार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम् ॥ 17 ॥

Meaning
किरीटिनम् — with helmets; गदिनम् — with maces; चक्रिणम् — with discs; च — and; तेजः-राशिम् — effulgence; सर्वतः — on all sides; दीप्ति-मंतम् — glowing; पश्यामि — I see; त्वाम् — You; दुर्निरीक्ष्यम् — difficult to see; समंतात् — everywhere; दीप्त-अनल — blazing fire; अर्क — of the sun; द्युतिम् — the sunshine; अप्रमेयम् — immeasurable.

Translation
Your form is difficult to see because of its glaring effulgence, spreading on all sides, like blazing fire or the immeasurable radiance of the sun. Yet I see this glowing form everywhere, adorned with various crowns, clubs and discs.

श्लोकः
त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं
त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम् ।
त्वमव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्‍ता
सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे ॥ 18 ॥

Meaning
त्वम् — You; अक्षरम् — the infallible; परमम् — supreme; वेदितव्यम् — to be understood; त्वम् — You; अस्य — of this; विश्वस्य — universe; परम् — supreme; निधानम् — basis; त्वम् — You; अव्ययः — inexhaustible; शाश्वत-धर्म-गोप्ता — maintainer of the eternal religion; सनातनः — eternal; त्वम् — You; पुरुषः — the Supreme Personality; मतः मे — this is my opinion.

Translation
You are the supreme primal objective. You are the ultimate resting place of all this universe. You are inexhaustible, and You are the oldest. You are the maintainer of the eternal religion, the Personality of Godhead. This is my opinion.

श्लोकः
अनादिमध्यांतमनंतवीर्य-
मनंतबाहुं शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् ।
पश्यामि त्वां दीप्‍तहुताशवक्‍त्रं
स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपंतम् ॥ 19 ॥

Meaning
अनादि — without beginning; मध्य — middle; अंतम् — or end; अनंत — unlimited; वीर्यम् — glories; अनंत — unlimited; बाहुम् — arms; शशि — the moon; सूर्य — and sun; नेत्रम् — eyes; पश्यामि — I see; त्वाम् — You; दीप्त — blazing; हुताश-वक्त्रम् — fire coming out of Your mouth; स्व-तेजसा — by Your radiance; विश्वम् — universe; इदम् — this; तपंतम् — heating.

Translation
You are without origin, middle or end. Your glory is unlimited. You have numberless arms, and the sun and moon are Your eyes. I see You with blazing fire coming forth from Your mouth, burning this entire universe by Your own radiance.

श्लोकः
द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमंतरं हि
व्याप्‍तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वाः ।
दृष्ट्वाद्‍भुतं रूपमुग्रं तवेदं
लोकत्रयं प्रव्यथितं महात्मन् ॥ 20 ॥

Meaning
द्यौ — from outer space; आ-पृथिव्योः — to the earth; इदम् — this; अंतरम् — between; हि — certainly; व्याप्तम् — pervaded; त्वया — by You; एकेन — alone; दिशः — directions; च — and; सर्वाः — all; दृष्ट्वा — by seeing; अद्भुतम् — wonderful; रूपम् — form; उग्रम् — terrible; तव — Your; इदम् — this; लोक — the planetary systems; त्रयम् — three; प्रव्यथितम् — perturbed; महा-आत्मन् — O great one.

Translation
Although You are one, You spread throughout the sky and the planets and all space between. O great one, seeing this wondrous and terrible form, all the planetary systems are perturbed.

श्लोकः
अमी हि त्वां सुरसंघा विशंति
केचिद्भ‍ईताः प्रांजलयो गृणंति ।
स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वा महर्षिसिद्धसंघाः
स्तुवंति त्वां स्तुतिभिः पुष्कलाभिः ॥ 21 ॥

Meaning
अमी — all those; हि — certainly; त्वाम् — You; सुर-संघाः — groups of demigods; विशंति — are entering; केचित् — some of them; भीताः — out of fear; प्रांजलयः — with folded hands; गृणंति — are offering prayers; स्वस्ति — all peace; इति — thus; उक्त्वा — speaking; महा-ऋषि — great sages; सिद्ध-संघाः — perfect beings; स्तुवंति — are singing hymns; त्वाम् — unto You; स्तुतिभिः — with prayers; पुष्कलाभिः — Vedic hymns.

Translation
All the hosts of demigods are surrendering before You and entering into You. Some of them, very much afraid, are offering prayers with folded hands. Hosts of great sages and perfected beings, crying “All peace!” are praying to You by singing the Vedic hymns.

श्लोकः
रुद्रादित्या वसवो ये च साध्या
विश्वेऽश्विनौ मरुतश्चोष्मपाश्च ।
गंधर्वयक्षासुरसिद्धसंघा
वीक्षंते त्वां विस्मिताश्चैव सर्वे ॥ 22 ॥

Meaning
रुद्र — manifestations of Lord Śiva; आदित्याः — the Ādityas; वसवः — the Vasus; ये — all those; च — and; साध्याः — the Sādhyas; विश्वे — the Viśvedevas; अश्विनौ — the Aśvinī-kumāras; मरुतः — the Maruts; च — and; उष्म-पाः — the forefathers; च — and; गंधर्व — of the Gandharvas; यक्ष — the Yakṣas; असुर — the demons; सिद्ध — and the perfected demigods; संघाः — the assemblies; वीक्षंते — are beholding; त्वाम् — You; विस्मिताः — in wonder; च — also; एव — certainly; सर्वे — all.

Translation
All the various manifestations of Lord Śiva, the Ādityas, the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Viśvedevas, the two Aśvīs, the Maruts, the forefathers, the Gandharvas, the Yakṣas, the Asuras and the perfected demigods are beholding You in wonder.

श्लोकः
रूपं महत्ते बहुवक्‍त्रनेत्रं
महाबाहो बहुबाहूरुपादम् ।
बहूदरं बहुदंष्ट्राकरालं
दृष्ट्वा लोकाः प्रव्यथितास्तथाहम् ॥ 23 ॥

Meaning
रूपम् — the form; महत् — very great; ते — of You; बहु — many; वक्त्र — faces; नेत्रम् — and eyes; महा-बाहो — O mighty-armed one; बहु — many; बाहु — arms; ऊरु — thighs; पादम् — and legs; बहु-उदरम् — many bellies; बहु-दंष्ट्रा — many teeth; करालम् — horrible; दृष्ट्वा — seeing; लोकाः — all the planets; प्रव्यथिताः — perturbed; तथा — similarly; अहम् — I.

Translation
O mighty-armed one, all the planets with their demigods are disturbed at seeing Your great form, with its many faces, eyes, arms, thighs, legs and bellies and Your many terrible teeth; and as they are disturbed, so am I.

श्लोकः
नभःस्पृशं दीप्‍तमनेकवर्णं
व्यात्ताननं दीप्‍तविशालनेत्रम् ।
दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितांतरात्मा
धृतिं न विंदामि शमं च विष्णो ॥ 24 ॥

Meaning
नभः-स्पृशम् — touching the sky; दीप्तम् — glowing; अनेक — many; वर्णम् — colors; व्यात्त — open; आननम् — mouths; दीप्त — glowing; विशाल — very great; नेत्रम् — eyes; दृष्ट्वा — seeing; हि — certainly; त्वाम् — You; प्रव्यथित — perturbed; अंतः — within; आत्मा — soul; धृतिम् — steadiness; न — not; विंदामि — I have; शमम् — mental tranquillity; च — also; विष्णो — O Lord Viṣṇu.

Translation
O all-pervading Viṣṇu, seeing You with Your many radiant colors touching the sky, Your gaping mouths, and Your great glowing eyes, my mind is perturbed by fear. I can no longer maintain my steadiness or equilibrium of mind.

श्लोकः
दंष्ट्राकरालानि च ते मुखानि
दृष्ट्वैव कालानलसन्निभानि ।
दिशो न जाने न लभे च शर्म
प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥ 25 ॥

Meaning
दंष्ट्रा — teeth; करालानि — terrible; च — also; ते — Your; मुखानि — faces; दृष्ट्वा — seeing; एव — thus; काल-अनल — the fire of death; सन्निभानि — as if; दिशः — the directions; न — not; जाने — I know; न — not; लभे — I obtain; च — and; शर्म — grace; प्रसीद — be pleased; देव-ईश — O Lord of all lords; जगत्-निवास — O refuge of the worlds.

Translation
O Lord of lords, O refuge of the worlds, please be gracious to me. I cannot keep my balance seeing thus Your blazing deathlike faces and awful teeth. In all directions I am bewildered.

श्लोकः
अमी च त्वां धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राः
सर्वे सहैवावनिपालसंघैः ।
भीष्मो द्रोणः सूतपुत्रस्तथासौ
सहास्मदीयैरपि योधमुख्यैः ॥ 26 ॥
वक्‍त्राणि ते त्वरमाणा विशंति
दंष्ट्राकरालानि भयानकानि ।
केचिद्विलग्न‍आ दशनांतरेषु
संदृश्यंते चूर्णितैरुत्तमांगैः ॥ 27 ॥

Meaning
अमी — these; च — also; त्वाम् — You; धृतराष्ट्रस्य — of Dhritarāṣṭra; पुत्राः — the sons; सर्वे — all; सह — with; एव — indeed; अवनि-पाल — of warrior kings; संघैः — the groups; भीष्मः — Bhīṣmadeva; द्रोणः — Droṇācārya; सूत-पुत्रः — Karṇa; तथा — also; असौ — that; सह — with; अस्मदीयैः — our; अपि — also; योध-मुख्यैः — chiefs among the warriors; वक्त्राणि — mouths; ते — Your; त्वरमाणाः — rushing; विशंति — are entering; दंष्ट्रा — teeth; करालानि — terrible; भयानकानि — very fearful; केचित् — some of them; विलग्नाः — becoming attached; दशन-अंतरेषु — between the teeth; संदृश्यंते — are seen; चूर्णितैः — with smashed; उत्तम-अंगैः — heads.

Translation
All the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra, along with their allied kings, and Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa – and our chief soldiers also – are rushing into Your fearful mouths. And some I see trapped with heads smashed between Your teeth.

श्लोकः
यथा नदीनां बहवोऽंबुवेगाः
समुद्रमेवाभिमुखा द्रवंति ।
तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा
विशंति वक्‍त्राण्यभिविज्‍वलंति ॥ 28 ॥

Meaning
यथा — as; नदीनाम् — of the rivers; बहवः — the many; अंबु-वेगाः — waves of the waters; समुद्रम् — the ocean; एव — certainly; अभिमुखाः — towards; द्रवंति — glide; तथा — similarly; तव — Your; अमी — all these; नर-लोक-वीराः — kings of human society; विशंति — are entering; वक्त्राणि — the mouths; अभिविज्वलंति — and are blazing.

Translation
As the many waves of the rivers flow into the ocean, so do all these great warriors enter blazing into Your mouths.

श्लोकः
यथा प्रदीप्‍तं ज्‍वलनं पतंगा
विशंति नाशाय समृद्धवेगाः ।
तथैव नाशाय विशंति लोका-
स्तवापि वक्‍त्राणि समृद्धवेगाः ॥ 29 ॥

Meaning

Translation
I see all people rushing full speed into Your mouths, as moths dash to destruction in a blazing fire.

श्लोकः
लेलिह्यसे ग्रसमानः समंता-
ल्लोकान्समग्रान्वदनैज्‍‍र्वलद्भ‍इः ।
तेजोभिरापूर्य जगत्समग्रं
भासस्तवोग्राः प्रतपंति विष्णो ॥ 30 ॥

Meaning
लेलिह्यसे — You are licking; ग्रसमानः — devouring; समंतात् — from all directions; लोकान् — people; समग्रान् — all; वदनैः — by the mouths; ज्वलद्भिः — blazing; तेजोभिः — by effulgence; आपूर्य — covering; जगत् — the universe; समग्रम् — all; भासः — rays; तव — Your; उग्राः — terrible; प्रतपंति — are scorching; विष्णो — O all-pervading Lord.

Translation
O Viṣṇu, I see You devouring all people from all sides with Your flaming mouths. Covering all the universe with Your effulgence, You are manifest with terrible, scorching rays.

श्लोकः
आख्याहि मे को भवानुग्ररूपो
नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद ।
विज्ञातुमिच्छामि भवंतमाद्यं
न हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम् ॥ 31 ॥

Meaning
आख्याहि — please explain; मे — unto me; कः — who; भवान् — You; उग्र-रूपः — fierce form; नमः अस्तु — obeisances; ते — unto You; देव-वर — O great one amongst the demigods; प्रसीद — be gracious; विज्ञातुम् — to know; इच्चामि — I wish; भवंतम् — You; आद्यम् — the original; न — not; हि — certainly; प्रजानामि — do I know; तव — Your; प्रवृत्तिम् — mission.

Translation
O Lord of lords, so fierce of form, please tell me who You are. I offer my obeisances unto You; please be gracious to me. You are the primal Lord. I want to know about You, for I do not know what Your mission is.

श्लोकः
श्रीभगवानुवाच
कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो
लोकान्समाहर्तुमिह प्रवृत्तः ।
‍ऋतेऽपि त्वां न भविष्यंति सर्वे
येऽवस्थिताः प्रत्यनीकेषु योधाः ॥ 32 ॥

Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — the Personality of Godhead said; कालः — time; अस्मि — I am; लोक — of the worlds; क्षय-कृत् — the destroyer; प्रवृद्धः — great; लोकान् — all people; समाहर्तुम् — in destroying; इह — in this world; प्रवृत्तः — engaged; ऋते — without, except for; अपि — even; त्वाम् — you; न — never; भविष्यंति — will be; सर्वे — all; ये — who; अवस्थिताः — situated; प्रति-अनीकेषु — on the opposite sides; योधाः — the soldiers.

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pāṇḍavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain.

श्लोकः
तस्मात्त्वमुत्तिष्ठ यशो लभस्व
जित्वा शत्रून्भुंक्ष्व राज्यं समृद्धम् ।
मयैवैते निहताः पूर्वमेव
निमित्तमात्रं भव सव्यसाचिन् ॥ 33 ॥

Meaning
तस्मात् — therefore; त्वम् — you; उत्तिष्ठ — get up; यशः — fame; लभस्व — gain; जित्वा — conquering; शत्रून् — enemies; भुंक्ष्व — enjoy; राज्यम् — kingdom; समृद्धम् — flourishing; मया — by Me; एव — certainly; एते — all these; निहताः — killed; पूर्वं एव — by previous arrangement; निमित्त-मात्रम् — just the cause; भव — become; सव्य-साचिन् — O Savyasācī.

Translation
Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Savyasācī, can be but an instrument in the fight.

श्लोकः
द्रोणं च भीष्मं च जयद्रथं च
कर्णं तथान्यानपि योधवीरान् ।
मया हतांस्त्वं जहि मा व्यथिष्ठा
युध्यस्व जेतासि रणे सपत्‍नान् ॥ 34 ॥

Meaning
द्रोणं च — also Droṇa; भीष्मं च — also Bhīṣma; जयद्रथं च — also Jayadratha; कर्णम् — Karṇa; तथा — also; अन्यान् — others; अपि — certainly; योध-वीरान् — great warriors; मया — by Me; हतान् — already killed; त्वम् — you; जहि — destroy; मा — do not; व्यथिष्ठाः — be disturbed; युध्यस्व — just fight; जेता असि — you will conquer; रणे — in the fight; सपत्नान् — enemies.

Translation
Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadratha, Karṇa and the other great warriors have already been destroyed by Me. Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight, and you will vanquish your enemies in battle.

श्लोकः
संजय उवाच
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं केशवस्य
कृतांजलिर्वेपमानः किरीटी ।
नमस्कृत्वा भूय एवाह कृष्णं
सगद्ग‍दं भीतभीतः प्रणम्य ॥ 35 ॥

Meaning
संजयः उवाच — Sañjaya said; एतत् — thus; श्रुत्वा — hearing; वचनम् — the speech; केशवस्य — of Kriṣṇa; कृत-अंजलिः — with folded hands; वेपमानः — trembling; किरीटी — Arjuna; नमस्कृत्वा — offering obeisances; भूयः — again; एव — also; आह — said; कृष्णम् — unto Kriṣṇa; स-गद्गदम् — with a faltering voice; भीत-भीतः — fearful; प्रणम्य — offering obeisances.

Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhritarāṣṭra: O King, after hearing these words from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the trembling Arjuna offered obeisances with folded hands again and again. He fearfully spoke to Lord Kriṣṇa in a faltering voice, as follows.

श्लोकः
अर्जुन उवाच
स्थाने हृषीकेश तव प्रकीर्त्या
जगत्प्रहृष्यत्यनुरज्यते च ।
रक्षांसि भीतानि दिशो द्रवंति
सर्वे नमस्यंति च सिद्धसंघाः ॥ 36 ॥

Meaning
अर्जुनः उवाच — Arjuna said; स्थाने — rightly; हृषीक-ईश — O master of all senses; तव — Your; प्रकीर्त्या — by the glories; जगत् — the entire world; प्रहृष्यति — is rejoicing; अनुरज्यते — is becoming attached; च — and; रक्षांसि — the demons; भीतानि — out of fear; दिशः — in all directions; द्रवंति — are fleeing; सर्वे — all; नमस्यंति — are offering respects; च — also; सिद्ध-संघाः — the perfect human beings.

Translation
Arjuna said: O master of the senses, the world becomes joyful upon hearing Your name, and thus everyone becomes attached to You. Although the perfected beings offer You their respectful homage, the demons are afraid, and they flee here and there. All this is rightly done.

श्लोकः
कस्माच्च‍ ते न नमेरन्महात्मन्
गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे ।
अनंत देवेश जगन्निवास
त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत् ॥ 37 ॥

Meaning
कस्मात् — why; च — also; ते — unto You; न — not; नमेरन् — they should offer proper obeisances; महा-आत्मन् — O great one; गरीयसे — who are better; ब्रह्मणः — than Brahmā; अपि — although; आदि-कर्त्रे — to the supreme creator; अनंत — O unlimited; देव-ईश — O God of the gods; जगत्-निवास — O refuge of the universe; त्वम् — You are; अक्षरम् — imperishable; सत्-असत् — to cause and effect; तत् परम् — transcendental; यत् — because.

Translation
O great one, greater even than Brahmā, You are the original creator. Why then should they not offer their respectful obeisances unto You? O limitless one, God of gods, refuge of the universe! You are the invincible source, the cause of all causes, transcendental to this material manifestation.

श्लोकः
त्वमादिदेवः पुरुषः पुराण-
स्त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम् ।
वेत्तासि वेद्यं च परं च धाम
त्वया ततं विश्वमनंतरूप ॥ 38 ॥

Meaning
त्वम् — You; आदि-देवः — the original Supreme God; पुरुषः — personality; पुराणः — old; त्वम् — You; अस्य — of this; विश्वस्य — universe; परम् — transcendental; निधानम् — refuge; वेत्ता — the knower; असि — You are; वेद्यम् — the knowable; च — and; परम् — transcendental; च — and; धाम — refuge; त्वया — by You; ततम् — pervaded; विश्वम् — the universe; अनंत-रूप — O unlimited form.

Translation
You are the original Personality of Godhead, the oldest, the ultimate sanctuary of this manifested cosmic world. You are the knower of everything, and You are all that is knowable. You are the supreme refuge, above the material modes. O limitless form! This whole cosmic manifestation is pervaded by You!

श्लोकः
वायुर्यमोऽग्न‍इर्वरुणः शशांकः
प्रजापतिस्त्वं प्रपितामहश्च ।
नमो नमस्तेऽस्तु सहस्रकृत्वः
पुनश्च भूयोऽपि नमो नमस्ते ॥ 39 ॥

Meaning
वायुः — air; यमः — the controller; अग्निः — fire; वरुणः — water; शश-अंकः — the moon; प्रजापतिः — Brahmā; त्वम् — You; प्रपितामहः — the great-grandfather; च — also; नमः — my respects; नमः — again my respects; ते — unto You; अस्तु — let there be; सहस्र-कृत्वः — a thousand times; पुनः च — and again; भूयः — again; अपि — also; नमः — offering my respects; नमः ते — offering my respects unto You.

Translation
You are air, and You are the supreme controller! You are fire, You are water, and You are the moon! You are Brahmā, the first living creature, and You are the great-grandfather. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again!

श्लोकः
नमः पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतस्ते
नमोऽस्तु ते सर्वत एव सर्व ।
अनंतवीर्यामितविक्रमस्त्वं
सर्वं समाप्‍नोषि ततोऽसि सर्वः ॥ 40 ॥

Meaning
नमः — offering obeisances; पुरस्तात् — from the front; अथ — also; पृष्ठतः — from behind; ते — unto You; नमः अस्तु — I offer my respects; ते — unto You; सर्वतः — from all sides; एव — indeed; सर्व — because You are everything; अनंत-वीर्य — unlimited potency; अमित-विक्रमः — and unlimited force; त्वम् — You; सर्वम् — everything; समाप्नोषि — You cover; ततः — therefore; असि — You are; सर्वः — everything.

Translation
Obeisances to You from the front, from behind and from all sides! O unbounded power, You are the master of limitless might! You are all-pervading, and thus You are everything!

श्लोकः
सखेति मत्वा प्रसभं यदुक्तं
हे कृष्ण हे यादव हे सखेति ।
अजानता महिमानं तवेदं
मया प्रमादात्प्रणयेन वापि ॥ 41 ॥
यच्च‍आवहासार्थमसत्कृतोऽसि
विहारशय्यासनभोजनेषु ।
एकोऽथवाप्यच्युत तत्समक्षं
तत्क्षामये त्वामहमप्रमेयम् ॥ 42 ॥

Meaning

Translation
Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You “O Kriṣṇa,” “O Yādava,” “O my friend,” not knowing Your glories. Please forgive whatever I may have done in madness or in love. I have dishonored You many times, jesting as we relaxed, lay on the same bed, or sat or ate together, sometimes alone and sometimes in front of many friends. O infallible one, please excuse me for all those offenses.

श्लोकः
पितासि लोकस्य चराचरस्य
त्वमस्य पूज्यश्च गुरुर्गरीयान् ।
न त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यधिकः कुतोऽन्यो
लोकत्रयेऽप्यप्रतिमप्रभाव ॥ 43 ॥

Meaning
पिता — the father; असि — You are; लोकस्य — of all the world; चर — moving; अचरस्य — and nonmoving; त्वम् — You are; अस्य — of this; पूज्यः — worshipable; च — also; गुरुः — master; गरीयान् — glorious; न — never; त्वत्-समः — equal to You; अस्ति — there is; अभ्यधिकः — greater; कुतः — how is it possible; अन्यः — other; लोक-त्रये — in the three planetary systems; अपि — also; अप्रतिम-प्रभाव — O immeasurable power.

Translation
You are the father of this complete cosmic manifestation, of the moving and the nonmoving. You are its worshipable chief, the supreme spiritual master. No one is greater than You, nor can anyone be one with You. How then could there be anyone greater than You within the three worlds, O Lord of immeasurable power?

श्लोकः
तस्मात्प्रणम्य प्रणिधाय कायं
प्रसादये त्वामहमीशमीड्यम् ।
पितेव पुत्रस्य सखेव सख्युः
प्रियः प्रियायार्हसि देव सोढुम् ॥ 44 ॥

Meaning
तस्मात् — therefore; प्रणम्य — offering obeisances; प्रणिधाय — laying down; कायम् — the body; प्रसादये — to beg mercy; त्वाम् — unto You; अहम् — I; ईशम् — unto the Supreme Lord; ईड्यम् — worshipable; पिता इव — like a father; पुत्रस्य — with a son; सखा इव — like a friend; सख्युः — with a friend; प्रियः — a lover; प्रियायाः — with the dearmost; अर्हसि — You should; देव — my Lord; सोढुम् — tolerate.

Translation
You are the Supreme Lord, to be worshiped by every living being. Thus I fall down to offer You my respectful obeisances and ask Your mercy. As a father tolerates the impudence of his son, a friend the impertinence of a friend, or a husband the familiarity of his wife, please tolerate the wrongs I may have done You.

श्लोकः
अदृष्टपूर्वं हृषितोऽस्मि दृष्ट्वा
भयेन च प्रव्यथितं मनो मे ।
तदेव मे दर्शय देव रूपं
प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥ 45 ॥

Meaning
अदृष्ट-पूर्वम् — never seen before; हृषितः — gladdened; अस्मि — I am; दृष्ट्वा — by seeing; भयेन — out of fear; च — also; प्रव्यथितम् — perturbed; मनः — mind; मे — my; तत् — that; एव — certainly; मे — unto me; दर्शय — show; देव — O Lord; रूपम् — the form; प्रसीद — just be gracious; देव-ईश — O Lord of lords; जगत्-निवास — O refuge of the universe.

Translation
After seeing this universal form, which I have never seen before, I am gladdened, but at the same time my mind is disturbed with fear. Therefore please bestow Your grace upon me and reveal again Your form as the Personality of Godhead, O Lord of lords, O abode of the universe.

श्लोकः
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रहस्त-
मिच्छामि त्वां द्रष्टुमहं तथैव ।
तेनैव रूपेण चतुर्भुजेन
सहस्रबाहो भव विश्वमूर्ते ॥ 46 ॥

Meaning
किरीटिनम् — with helmet; गदिनम् — with club; चक्र-हस्तम् — disc in hand; इच्चामि — I wish; त्वाम् — You; द्रष्टुम् — to see; अहम् — I; तथा एव — in that position; तेन एव — in that; रूपेण — form; चतुः-भुजेन — four-handed; सहस्र-बाहो — O thousand-handed one; भव — just become; विश्व-मूर्ते — O universal form.

Translation
O universal form, O thousand-armed Lord, I wish to see You in Your four-armed form, with helmeted head and with club, wheel, conch and lotus flower in Your hands. I long to see You in that form.

श्लोकः
श्रीभगवानुवाच
मया प्रसन्नेन तवार्जुनेदं
रूपं परं दर्शितमात्मयोगात् ।
तेजोमयं विश्वमनंतमाद्यं
यन्मे त्वदन्येन न दृष्टपूर्वम् ॥ 47 ॥

Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; मया — by Me; प्रसन्नेन — happily; तव — unto you; अर्जुन — O Arjuna; इदम् — this; रूपम् — form; परम् — transcendental; दर्शितम् — shown; आत्म-योगात् — by My internal potency; तेजः-मयम् — full of effulgence; विश्वम् — the entire universe; अनंतम् — unlimited; आद्यम् — original; यत् — that which; मे — My; त्वत् अन्येन — besides you; न दृष्ट-पूर्वम् — no one has previously seen.

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, happily have I shown you, by My internal potency, this supreme universal form within the material world. No one before you has ever seen this primal form, unlimited and full of glaring effulgence.

श्लोकः
न वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैर्न दानै-
र्न च क्रियाभिर्न तपोभिरुग्रैः ।
एवंरूपः शक्य अहं नृलोके
द्रष्टुं त्वदन्येन कुरुप्रवीर ॥ 48 ॥

Meaning
न — never; वेद-यज्ञ — by sacrifice; अध्ययनैः — or Vedic study; न — never; दानैः — by charity; न — never; च — also; क्रियाभिः — by pious activities; न — never; तपोभिः — by serious penances; उग्रैः — severe; एवम्-रूपः — in this form; शक्यः — can; अहम् — I; नृ-लोके — in this material world; द्रष्टुम् — be seen; त्वत् — than you; अन्येन — by another; कुरु-प्रवीर — O best among the Kuru warriors.

Translation
O best of the Kuru warriors, no one before you has ever seen this universal form of Mine, for neither by studying the Vedas, nor by performing sacrifices, nor by charity, nor by pious activities, nor by severe penances can I be seen in this form in the material world.

श्लोकः
मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावो
दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्‍ममेदम् ।
व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनस्त्वं
तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य ॥ 49 ॥

Meaning
मा — let it not be; ते — unto you; व्यथा — trouble; मा — let it not be; च — also; विमूढ-भावः — bewilderment; दृष्ट्वा — by seeing; रूपम् — form; घोरम् — horrible; ईदृक् — as it is; मम — My; इदम् — this; व्यपेत-भीः — free from all fear; प्रीत-मनाः — pleased in mind; पुनः — again; त्वम् — you; तत् — that; एव — thus; मे — My; रूपम् — form; इदम् — this; प्रपश्य — just see.

Translation
You have been perturbed and bewildered by seeing this horrible feature of Mine. Now let it be finished. My devotee, be free again from all disturbances. With a peaceful mind you can now see the form you desire.

श्लोकः
संजय उवाच
इत्यर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तथोक्त्वा
स्वकं रूपं दर्शयामास भूयः ।
आश्वासयामास च भीतमेनं
भूत्वा पुनः सौम्यवपुर्महात्मा ॥ 50 ॥

Meaning
संजयः उवाच — Sañjaya said; इति — thus; अर्जुनम् — unto Arjuna; वासुदेवः — Kriṣṇa; तथा — in that way; उक्त्वा — speaking; स्वकम् — His own; रूपम् — form; दर्शयां आस — showed; भूयः — again; आश्वासयां आस — encouraged; च — also; भीतम् — fearful; एनम् — him; भूत्वा — becoming; पुनः — again; सौम्य-वपुः — the beautiful form; महा-आत्मा — the great one.

Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhritarāṣṭra: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa, having spoken thus to Arjuna, displayed His real four-armed form and at last showed His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna.

श्लोकः
अर्जुन उवाच
दृष्ट्वेदं मानुषं रूपं तव सौम्यं जनार्दन ।
इदानीमस्मि संवृत्तः सचेताः प्रकृतिं गतः ॥ 51 ॥

Meaning
अर्जुनः उवाच — Arjuna said; दृष्ट्वा — seeing; इदम् — this; मानुषम् — human; रूपम् — form; तव — Your; सौम्यम् — very beautiful; जनार्दन — O chastiser of the enemies; इदानीम् — now; अस्मि — I am; संवृत्तः — settled; स-चेताः — in my consciousness; प्रकृतिम् — to my own nature; गतः — returned.

Translation
When Arjuna thus saw Kriṣṇa in His original form, he said: O Janārdana, seeing this humanlike form, so very beautiful, I am now composed in mind, and I am restored to my original nature.

श्लोकः
श्रीभगवानुवाच
सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम ।
देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्‍‍क्षिणः ॥ 52 ॥

Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; सु-दुर्दर्शम् — very difficult to see; इदम् — this; रूपम् — form; दृष्टवान् असि — as you have seen; यत् — which; मम — of Mine; देवाः — the demigods; अपि — also; अस्य — this; रूपस्य — form; नित्यम् — eternally; दर्शन-कांक्षिणः — aspiring to see.

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, this form of Mine you are now seeing is very difficult to behold. Even the demigods are ever seeking the opportunity to see this form, which is so dear.

श्लोकः
नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया ।
शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुं दृष्टवानसि मां यथा ॥ 53 ॥

Meaning
न — never; अहम् — I; वेदैः — by study of the Vedas; न — never; तपसा — by serious penances; न — never; दानेन — by charity; न — never; च — also; इज्यया — by worship; शक्यः — it is possible; एवम्-विधः — like this; द्रष्टुम् — to see; दृष्टवान् — seeing; असि — you are; माम् — Me; यथा — as.

Translation
The form you are seeing with your transcendental eyes cannot be understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. It is not by these means that one can see Me as I am.

श्लोकः
भक्त्य‍आ त्वनन्यया शक्य अहमेवंविधोऽर्जुन ।
ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुं च परंतप ॥ 54 ॥

Meaning
भक्त्या — by devotional service; तु — but; अनन्यया — without being mixed with fruitive activities or speculative knowledge; शक्यः — possible; अहम् — I; एवम्-विधः — like this; अर्जुन — O Arjuna; ज्ञातुम् — to know; द्रष्टुम् — to see; च — and; तत्त्वेन — in fact; प्रवेष्टुम् — to enter into; च — also; परम्-तप — O subduer of the enemy.

Translation
My dear Arjuna, only by undivided devotional service can I be understood as I am, standing before you, and can thus be seen directly. Only in this way can you enter into the mysteries of My understanding.

श्लोकः
मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो मद्भ‍क्तः संगवर्जितः ।
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु यः स मामेति पांडव ॥ 55 ॥

Meaning
मत्-कर्म-कृत् — engaged in doing My work; मत्-परमः — considering Me the Supreme; मत्-भक्तः — engaged in My devotional service; संग-वर्जितः — freed from the contamination of fruitive activities and mental speculation; निर्वैरः — without an enemy; सर्व-भूतेषु — among all living entities; यः — one who; सः — he; माम् — unto Me; एति — comes; पांडव — O son of Pāṇḍu.

Translation
My dear Arjuna, he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from the contaminations of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who works for Me, who makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is friendly to every living being – he certainly comes to Me.
