શ્રી મહિષાસુર મર્દિની સ્તોત્રમ્ is a powerful hymn to the Goddess as the destroyer of Mahishasura, the buffalo-demon who represents brute arrogance, violence, and shape-shifting ego. Its rhythmic refrain જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ celebrates Devi as beauty, strength, protection, and the victorious energy of ધર્મ.

Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory, victory to you, O daughter of the mountain, delighter of the earth and universe, dweller on the Vindhya peak, delight of Vishnu, praised by Indra, belonging to Shiva's family, mother of all, beautiful mountain-born crusher of Mahishasura.
સુરવરવર્ષિણિ દુર્ધરધર્ષિણિ દુર્મુખમર્ષિણિ હર્ષરતે
ત્રિભુવનપોષિણિ શંકરતોષિણિ કલ્મષમોષિણિ ઘોરરતે । [કિલ્બિષ-, ઘોષ-]
દનુજનિરોષિણિ દિતિસુતરોષિણિ દુર્મદશોષિણિ સિંધુસુતે

Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to you who shower blessings on the gods, subdue the unconquerable, remove impurity, nourish the three worlds, delight Shiva, and dry up the pride of hostile demonic forces.
અયિ જગદંબ મદંબ કદંબવનપ્રિયવાસિનિ હાસરતે
શિખરિ શિરોમણિ તુંગહિમાલય શૃંગનિજાલય મધ્યગતે ।
મધુમધુરે મધુકૈટભગંજિનિ કૈટભભંજિનિ રાસરતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 3 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
O Mother of the world, my Mother, lover of the kadamba grove, smiling one who dwells on the high Himalayan peaks, honey-sweet destroyer of Madhu and Kaitabha, victory to you who delights in divine play.
અયિ શતખંડ વિખંડિતરુંડ વિતુંડિતશુંડ ગજાધિપતે
રિપુગજગંડ વિદારણચંડ પરાક્રમશુંડ મૃગાધિપતે ।
નિજભુજદંડ નિપાતિતખંડ વિપાતિતમુંડ ભટાધિપતે [-ચંડ]
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 4 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the lion-riding Goddess whose own powerful arms shatter the heads, trunks, and proud elephant-like forces of the enemy in battle.
અયિ રણદુર્મદ શત્રુવધોદિત દુર્ધરનિર્જર શક્તિભૃતે
ચતુરવિચારધુરીણ મહાશિવ દૂતકૃત પ્રમથાધિપતે ।
દુરિતદુરીહ દુરાશય દુર્મતિ દાનવદૂત કૃતાંતમતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 5 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess who bears the gods' irresistible power, wisely directs even Shiva as messenger, and brings an end to sinful, evil-minded demonic arrogance.
અયિ શરણાગત વૈરિવધૂવર વીરવરાભયદાયકરે
ત્રિભુવન મસ્તક શૂલવિરોધિ શિરોધિકૃતામલ શૂલકરે ।
દુમિદુમિતામર દુંદુભિનાદ મહો મુખરીકૃત તિગ્મકરે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 6 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the refuge-giving Mother who grants fearlessness, wields the pure trident against hostile forces, and fills the heavens with the resounding drums of victory.
અયિ નિજહુંકૃતિમાત્ર નિરાકૃત ધૂમ્રવિલોચન ધૂમ્રશતે
સમરવિશોષિત શોણિતબીજ સમુદ્ભવશોણિત બીજલતે ।
શિવ શિવ શુંભ નિશુંભ મહાહવ તર્પિત ભૂત પિશાચરતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 7 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess whose very cry destroys Dhumralochana, who dries up the blood-seed of Raktabija in battle, and who defeats Shumbha and Nishumbha amid the fierce hosts.
ધનુરનુસંગ રણક્ષણસંગ પરિસ્ફુરદંગ નટત્કટકે
કનક પિશંગ પૃષત્કનિષંગરસદ્ભટ શૃંગ હતાવટુકે ।
કૃતચતુરંગ બલક્ષિતિરંગ ઘટદ્બહુરંગ રટદ્બટુકે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 8 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess whose flashing limbs, bow, quiver, warriors, and fourfold army move in brilliant battle order against the forces of adharma.
સુરલલના તતથેયિ તથેયિ કૃતાભિનયોદર નૃત્યરતે
કૃત કુકુથઃ કુકુથો ગડદાદિકતાલ કુતૂહલ ગાનરતે ।
ધુધુકુટ ધુક્કુટ ધિંધિમિત ધ્વનિ ધીર મૃદંગ નિનાદરતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 9 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess who delights in celestial dance, expressive movement, eager song, and the powerful rhythms of drums resounding in devotion.
જય જય જપ્ય જયે જય શબ્દપરસ્તુતિ તત્પર વિશ્વનુતે
ભણ ભણ ભિંજિમિ ભિંકૃતનૂપુર સિંજિતમોહિત ભૂતપતે । [ઝ-, ઝિં-]

Victory to the universally praised Goddess, worthy of repeated japa, whose anklets ring with enchanting sound and who delights in dance, drama, and beautiful song.
અયિ સુમનઃ સુમનઃ સુમનઃ સુમનઃ સુમનોહર કાંતિયુતે
શ્રિત રજની રજની રજની રજની રજનીકર વક્ત્રવૃતે ।
સુનયન વિભ્રમર ભ્રમર ભ્રમર ભ્રમર ભ્રમરાધિપતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 11 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the mountain-born Goddess whose captivating beauty delights noble minds, whose moon-like face shines, and whose lovely eyes draw bee-like devotion.
સહિત મહાહવ મલ્લમ તલ્લિક મલ્લિત રલ્લક મલ્લરતે
વિરચિત વલ્લિક પલ્લિક મલ્લિક ભિલ્લિક ભિલ્લિક વર્ગ વૃતે ।
સિતકૃત ફુલ્લસમુલ્લસિતારુણ તલ્લજ પલ્લવ સલ્લલિતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 12 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess who is present in heroic battle and also in blossoming groves, surrounded by attendants and adorned with the grace of tender red leaves and flowers.
અવિરલગંડગલન્મદમેદુર મત્તમતંગજ રાજપતે
ત્રિભુવનભૂષણ ભૂતકલાનિધિ રૂપપયોનિધિ રાજસુતે ।
અયિ સુદતીજન લાલસમાનસ મોહનમન્મથ રાજસુતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 13 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the royal daughter, ornament of the three worlds, ocean of beauty and treasure of arts, whose majesty surpasses intoxicated royal elephants and enchants every refined mind.
કમલદલામલ કોમલકાંતિ કલાકલિતામલ ભાલલતે
સકલવિલાસ કળાનિલય ક્રમકેલિચલત્કલહંસકુલે ।
અલિકુલ સંકુલ કુવલય મંડલ મૌલિમિલદ્ભકુલાલિ કુલે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 14 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess of lotus-pure tenderness, abode of graceful arts, surrounded by playful swans, bees, blue lotuses, and fragrant blossoms.
કરમુરળીરવ વીજિત કૂજિત લજ્જિતકોકિલ મંજુમતે
મિલિત પુલિંદ મનોહર ગુંજિત રંજિતશૈલ નિકુંજગતે ।
નિજગુણભૂત મહાશબરીગણ સદ્ગુણસંભૃત કેળિતલે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 15 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the charming Mother whose music humbles the cuckoo, whose presence delights mountain groves and forest devotees, and whose playfield is filled with noble qualities.
કટિતટપીત દુકૂલવિચિત્ર મયૂખતિરસ્કૃત ચંદ્રરુચે
પ્રણતસુરાસુર મૌળિમણિસ્ફુર દંશુલસન્નખ ચંદ્રરુચે ।
જિતકનકાચલ મૌળિપદોર્જિત નિર્ભરકુંજર કુંભકુચે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 16 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess clothed in yellow silk, outshining moonlight, whose toenails flash with rays from the crown-jewels of bowing gods and asuras, and whose form surpasses golden mountains in splendor.
વિજિત સહસ્રકરૈક સહસ્રકરૈક સહસ્રકરૈકનુતે
કૃત સુરતારક સંગરતારક સંગરતારક સૂનુસુતે ।
સુરથસમાધિ સમાનસમાધિ સમાધિ સમાધિ સુજાતરતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 17 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Victory to the Goddess praised by the thousand-rayed sun, savior of the gods in battle, and gracious to devotees like Suratha and Samadhi who sought refuge in her.
પદકમલં કરુણાનિલયે વરિવસ્યતિ યોઽનુદિનં સ શિવે
અયિ કમલે કમલાનિલયે કમલાનિલયઃ સ કથં ન ભવેત્ ।
તવ પદમેવ પરંપદમિત્યનુશીલયતો મમ કિં ન શિવે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 18 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
O compassionate, auspicious lotus-goddess, how can one who worships your lotus feet daily fail to become lotus-like? For one who contemplates your feet as the supreme goal, what blessing is impossible?
કનકલસત્કલ સિંધુજલૈરનુસિંચિનુતે ગુણરંગભુવં
ભજતિ સ કિં ન શચીકુચકુંભ તટીપરિરંભ સુખાનુભવમ્ ।
તવ ચરણં શરણં કરવાણિ નતામરવાણિ નિવાસિ શિવં
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 19 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Those who worship you with golden vessels and sacred waters may gain heavenly joys, but I make your feet my refuge, O one praised by the gods; may that refuge be auspicious.
તવ વિમલેંદુકુલં વદનેંદુમલં સકલં નનુ કૂલયતે
કિમુ પુરુહૂત પુરીંદુમુખી સુમુખીભિરસૌ વિમુખીક્રિયતે ।
મમ તુ મતં શિવનામધને ભવતી કૃપયા કિમુત ક્રિયતે
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 20 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
Your pure moon-like face draws all beauty together; by your grace, what could be denied to one whose true wealth is the name of Shiva?
અયિ મયિ દીનદયાલુતયા કૃપયૈવ ત્વયા ભવિતવ્યમુમે
અયિ જગતો જનની કૃપયાસિ યથાસિ તથાઽનુભિતાસિરતે ।
યદુચિતમત્ર ભવત્યુરરિ કુરુતાદુરુતાપમપાકુરુ તે [મે]
જય જય હે મહિષાસુરમર્દિનિ રમ્યકપર્દિનિ શૈલસુતે ॥ 21 ॥
Translation (ભાવાર્થ):
O Uma, Mother of the world, be gracious to me with compassion for the helpless. As you truly are, please do what is fitting here and remove this terrible distress.
