ಹಿರಣ್ಯಾಕ್ಷಂ ತಾವದ್ವರದ ಭವದನ್ವೇಷಣಪರಂ
ಚರಂತಂ ಸಾಂವರ್ತೇ ಪಯಸಿ ನಿಜಜಂಘಾಪರಿಮಿತೇ ।
ಭವದ್ಭಕ್ತೋ ಗತ್ವಾ ಕಪಟಪಟುಧೀರ್ನಾರದಮುನಿಃ
ಶನೈರೂಚೇ ನಂದನ್ ದನುಜಮಪಿ ನಿಂದಂಸ್ತವ ಬಲಮ್ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಹಿರಣ್ಯಾಕ್ಷಂ ತಾವತ್- - to Hiranyaaksha, then; ವರದ - O Bestower of boons!; ಭವತ್-ಅಣ್ವೇಷಣಪರಂ - who was searching for Thee (and); ಚರಂತಂ ಸಾಂವರ್ತೇ ಪಯಸಿ - who was running around in the waters of deluge; ನಿಜ-ಜಂಘಾ-ಪರಿಮಿತೇ - which was reaching his thighs; ಭವತ್-ಭಕ್ತಃ ಗತ್ವಾ - Thy devotee approaching (Hiranyaaksha); ಕಪಟಪಟುಧೀಃ-ನಾರದಮುನಿಃ - Naarada muni who was a diplomatic missionary; ಶನೈಃ-ಊಚೇ - calmly spoke (to Hiranyaaksha); ನಂದನ್ ದನುಜಂ-ಅಪಿ - pleasing the Asura; ನಿಂದನ್-ತವ ಬಲಂ - and denigrating Thy prowess;
Translation
O Bestower of Boons! Then Thy devotee, the sage Naarada who is skillfully diplomatic in furthering Thy purposes, approached Hiranyaaksha, who was running about searching for Thee, in the cosmic waters which barely reached his knees. Naarada calmly spoke to him, praising him and undermining Thy prowess.

ಸ ಮಾಯಾವೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುರ್ಹರತಿ ಭವದೀಯಾಂ ವಸುಮತೀಂ
ಪ್ರಭೋ ಕಷ್ಟಂ ಕಷ್ಟಂ ಕಿಮಿದಮಿತಿ ತೇನಾಭಿಗದಿತಃ ।
ನದನ್ ಕ್ವಾಸೌ ಕ್ವಾಸವಿತಿ ಸ ಮುನಿನಾ ದರ್ಶಿತಪಥೋ
ಭವಂತಂ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪದ್ಧರಣಿಧರಮುದ್ಯಂತಮುದಕಾತ್ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಸಃ ಮಾಯಾವೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುಃ- - "that deceitful Vishnu; ಹರತಿ ಭವದೀಯಾಂ ವಸುಮತೀಂ - is stealing away your own earth; ಪ್ರಭೋ - O Mighty One!; ಕಷ್ಟಂ ಕಷ್ಟಂ ಕಿಂ-ಇದಂ-ಇತಿ - what a pity, how is it so", thus; ತೇನ-ಅಭಿಗದಿತಃ - by him (Naarada) was said; ನದನ್ ಕ್ವ-ಅಸೌ - roaring "Where is he; ಕ್ವ-ಅಸೌ-ಇತಿ - where is he", thus; ಸ ಮುನಿನಾ - he (the Asura) by the Muni; ದರ್ಶಿತ-ಪಥಃ - was shown the way; ಭವಂತಂ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪತ್- - reached Thee; ಧರಣಿ-ಧರಂ- - (Thee who was) holding up the earth; ಉದ್ಯಂತಂ-ಉದಕಾತ್ - coming up from the waters;
Translation
When Naarada told the mighty Hiranyaaksh that the deceitful Vishnu was stealing away his own earth and how was it so , Hiranyaaksha with a roar asked where he was, where he was. Thus, following the direction given by the sage, he reached Thee, as Thou were rising up from the waters with the earth.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಹೋ ಆರಣ್ಯೋಽಯಂ ಮೃಗ ಇತಿ ಹಸಂತಂ ಬಹುತರೈ-
ರ್ದುರುಕ್ತೈರ್ವಿಧ್ಯಂತಂ ದಿತಿಸುತಮವಜ್ಞಾಯ ಭಗವನ್ ।
ಮಹೀಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಾಶಿರಸಿ ಚಕಿತಾಂ ಸ್ವೇನ ಮಹಸಾ
ಪಯೋಧಾವಾಧಾಯ ಪ್ರಸಭಮುದಯುಂಕ್ಥಾ ಮೃಧವಿಧೌ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಅಹೋ ಆರಣ್ಯಃ-ಅಯಂ ಮೃಗ - "O this is only a wild animal"; ಇತಿ ಹಸಂತಂ - thus ridiculing with; ಬಹುತರೈಃ-ದುರುಕ್ತೈಃ-ವಿಧ್ಯಂತಂ - and many abuses lashing out; ದಿತಿಸುತಂ- - the son of Diti (the Asura); ಅವಜ್ಞಾಯ ಭಗವನ್ - ignoring (Thee) O Lord; ಮಹೀಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ - seeing the earth; ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಾಶಿರಸಿ - at the tip of the tusks; ಚಕಿತಾಂ - (the earth) trembling; ಸ್ವೇನ ಮಹಸಾ - by Thy power; ಪಯೋಧೌ-ಆಧಾಯ - (then) placing (the earth) in the ocean; ಪ್ರಸಭಂ- - at once; ಉದಯುಂಕ್ಥಾ - (Thou) did prepare; ಮೃಧವಿಧೌ - for a fight;
Translation
O Lord! Thou ignored the ridiculing words of the Asura that this is only a wild animal and the many abuses hurled by him. Thou saw the earth trembling in fear at the tip of Thy tusk and so placed her firmly on the ocean by Thy power. Then Thou at once were ready for a fight.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಗದಾಪಾಣೌ ದೈತ್ಯೇ ತ್ವಮಪಿ ಹಿ ಗೃಹೀತೋನ್ನತಗದೋ
ನಿಯುದ್ಧೇನ ಕ್ರೀಡನ್ ಘಟಘಟರವೋದ್ಘುಷ್ಟವಿಯತಾ ।
ರಣಾಲೋಕೌತ್ಸುಕ್ಯಾನ್ಮಿಲತಿ ಸುರಸಂಘೇ ದ್ರುತಮಮುಂ
ನಿರುಂಧ್ಯಾಃ ಸಂಧ್ಯಾತಃ ಪ್ರಥಮಮಿತಿ ಧಾತ್ರಾ ಜಗದಿಷೇ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಗದಾಪಾಣೌ ದೈತ್ಯೇ - the Asura armed with a mace; ತ್ವಂ-ಅಪಿ ಹಿ - Thou also indeed; ಗೃಹೀತ-ಉನಂತ-ಗದಃ - flourishing a mighty mace; ನಿಯುದ್ಧೇನ ಕ್ರೀಡನ್ - by a dual (fight) as though sporting (the clashing of maces); ಘಟ-ಘಟ-ರವ-ಉದ್ಘುಷ್ಟ-ವಿಯತಾ - resounding the sky with fierce sound; ರಣ-ಆಲೋಕ-ಔತ್ಸುಕ್ಯಾತ್- - with the eagerness to see the fight; ಮಿಲತಿ ಸುರಸಂಘೇ - when the hosts of gods assembled; ದ್ರುತಂ-ಅಮುಂ ನಿರುಂಧ್ಯಾಃ - quickly kill this (Asura); ಸಂಧ್ಯಾತಃ ಪ್ರಥಮಂ- - before evening; ಇತಿ ಧಾತ್ರಾ ಜಗದಿಷೇ - thus Thou were requested by Brahmaa;
Translation
As the Asura was armed with a mace, Thou too flourished a mighty mace and sportingly gave him battle. As the clang of the clashing maces resounded in the sky, the hosts of gods assembled eagerly to see the dual. Brahmaa cried out requesting Thee to kill the Asura before nightfall.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಗದೋನ್ಮರ್ದೇ ತಸ್ಮಿಂಸ್ತವ ಖಲು ಗದಾಯಾಂ ದಿತಿಭುವೋ
ಗದಾಘಾತಾದ್ಭೂಮೌ ಝಟಿತಿ ಪತಿತಾಯಾಮಹಹ! ಭೋಃ ।
ಮೃದುಸ್ಮೇರಾಸ್ಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ದನುಜಕುಲನಿರ್ಮೂಲನಚಣಂ
ಮಹಾಚಕ್ರಂ ಸ್ಮೃತ್ವಾ ಕರಭುವಿ ದಧಾನೋ ರುರುಚಿಷೇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಗದೋನ್ಮರ್ದೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್- - in that fight with the maces; ತವ ಖಲು ಗದಾಯಾಂ - (when) Thy mace indeed; ದಿತಿಭುವಃ - (and) of the Asura's; ಗದಾ-ಘಾತಾತ್- - by a blow of the mace; ಭೂಮೌ ಝಟಿತಿ ಪತಿತಾಯಾಂ- - on the ground suddenly fell; ಅಹಹ ಭೋಃ - what a wonder O Lord!; ಮೃದುಸ್ಮೇರ-ಆಸ್ಯಃ-ತ್ವಂ - with a gentle smile on Thy face, Thou; ದನುಜಕುಲ-ನಿರ್ಮೂಲಚಣಂ - famous as the destroyer of the entire Asura race; ಮಹಾಚಕ್ರಂ ಸ್ಮೃತ್ವಾ - (that) great discus invoking (Sudarshana); ಕರಭುವಿ ದಧಾನೋ - in the palms of Thy hands holding; ರುರುಚಿಷೇ - looked magnificent;
Translation
During that combat, the Asura's stroke suddenly knocked down Thy mace to the ground. With a smile on Thy face Thou invoked Thy discus (Sudarshana) which is well known for slaying of the race of the Asuras. Thou looked magnificent as the invoked discus placed itself in Thy hands.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತತಃ ಶೂಲಂ ಕಾಲಪ್ರತಿಮರುಷಿ ದೈತ್ಯೇ ವಿಸೃಜತಿ
ತ್ವಯಿ ಛಿಂದತ್ಯೇನತ್ ಕರಕಲಿತಚಕ್ರಪ್ರಹರಣಾತ್ ।
ಸಮಾರುಷ್ಟೋ ಮುಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ಸ ಖಲು ವಿತುದಂಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಸಮತನೋತ್
ಗಲನ್ಮಾಯೇ ಮಾಯಾಸ್ತ್ವಯಿ ಕಿಲ ಜಗನ್ಮೋಹನಕರೀಃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ತತಃ ಶೂಲಂ - then, a trident; ಕಾಲಪ್ರತಿಂ-ಅರುಷಿ ದೈತ್ಯೇ - angry like Rudra the Destroyer, when the Asura; ವಿಸೃಜತಿ - threw (the trident); ತ್ವಯಿ ಛಿಂದತಿ- - Thou broke; ಏನತ್ - this (trident); ಕರ-ಕಲಿತ-ಚಕ್ರ-ಪ್ರಹರಣಾತ್ - by the blow of the discus held in Thy hand; ಸಮಾರುಷ್ಟಃ - greatly enraged; ಮುಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ಸ ಖಲು - with (his) fist he indeed; ವಿತುದನ್-ತ್ವಾಂ - hitting Thee; ಸಮತನೋತ್ ಗಲನ್ಮಾಯೇ - did employ against Thee, who are beyond, the effects of Maya; ಮಾಯಾಃ ತ್ವಯಿ ಕಿಲ - Maaya on Thee indeed; ಜಗತ್-ಮೋಹನಕರೀಃ - (Maya) whose tricks can deceive the whole world;
Translation
The Asura who was angry as the Destroyer Rudra, threw his trident at Thee, and Thou broke it with the discus in Thy hands.Greatly enraged he hit Thee with his fist and also employed tricks of Maya against Thee,which may deceive the whole world but does not effect Thee who are above all Maya.

ಭವಚ್ಚಕ್ರಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಕಣಲವನಿಪಾತೇನ ವಿಧುತೇ

ಸ್ವಪಾದಾಂಗುಷ್ಠೇನ ಶ್ರವಣಪದಮೂಲೇ ನಿರವಧೀಃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಭವತ್-ಚಕ್ರ-ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್-ಕಣ-ಲವ-ನಿಪಾತೇನ - being hit by a powerful spark of Thy divine discus; ವಿಧುತೇ - were destroyed; ತತಃ ಮಾಯಾ-ಚಕ್ರೇ - then (when) the illusion created by the Asura; ವಿತತ-ಘನ-ರೋಷ-ಅಂಧ-ಮನಸಂ - whose mind was blinded by intense rage; ಗರಿಷ್ಠಾಭಿಃ-ಮುಷ್ಟಿ-ಪ್ರಹೃತಿಭಿಃ- - with strong blows of his fist; ಅಭಿಘ್ನಂತಂ-ಅಸುರಂ - the Asura who was hitting Thee; ಸ್ವ-ಪಾದ-ಅಙುಗುಷ್ಠೇನ - with Thy big toe; ಶ್ರವಣ-ಪದ-ಮೂಲೇ - at the base of (his) ear; ನಿರವಧೀಃ - Thou did strike;
Translation
When the illusions created by the Asura were all dispersed being hit by a powerful spark of Thy divine discus, the Asura's mind was overcome by intense rage. He then attacked Thee with strong blows of his heavy fists, whereupon Thou struck him with a powerful blow with Thy big toe at the base of his ear.

ಮಹಾಕಾಯಃ ಸೋಽಯಂ ತವ ಚರಣಪಾತಪ್ರಮಥಿತೋ
ಗಲದ್ರಕ್ತೋ ವಕ್ತ್ರಾದಪತದೃಷಿಭಿಃ ಶ್ಲಾಘಿತಹತಿಃ ।
ತದಾ ತ್ವಾಮುದ್ದಾಮಪ್ರಮದಭರವಿದ್ಯೋತಿಹೃದಯಾ
ಮುನೀಂದ್ರಾಃ ಸಾಂದ್ರಾಭಿಃ ಸ್ತುತಿಭಿರನುವನ್ನಧ್ವರತನುಮ್ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಮಹಾಕಾಯಃ ಸಃ-ಅಯಂ - that Asura of gigantic proportions; ತವ ಚರಣ-ಪಾತ-ಪ್ರಮಥಿತಃ - by the blow of Thy foot crushed; ಗಲತ್-ರಕ್ತಃ ವಕ್ತ್ರಾತ್- - with blood flowing out of his mouth; ಅಪತತ್- - fell; ಋಷಿಭಿಃ ಶ್ಲಾಘಿತ-ಹತಿಃ - the sages praised his slaying; ತದಾ ತ್ವಾಂ- - then to Thee; ಉದ್ದಾಮ-ಪ್ರಮದಭರ-ವಿದ್ಯೋತಿ-ಹೃದಯಾ - with their hearts full and brimming with joy; ಮುನೀಂದ್ರಾಃ - the great sages; ಸಾಂದ್ರಾಭಿಃ ಸ್ತುತಿಭಿಃ- - with verses full of deep meaning; ಅನುವನ್- - praised; ಅಧ್ವರ-ತನುಂ - O Thou! The Embodiment of Yajna;
Translation
That gigantic Asura crushed by the powerful blow of Thy foot, fell down with blood flowing out of his mouth. The sages praised his slaying. O Thou! Who are the embodiment of Yajna! As they did so their hearts were full and brimming with joy. They sang hymns with deep meaning.

ತ್ವಚಿ ಛಂದೋ ರೋಮಸ್ವಪಿ ಕುಶಗಣಶ್ಚಕ್ಷುಷಿ ಘೃತಂ
ಚತುರ್ಹೋತಾರೋಽಂಘ್ರೌ ಸ್ರುಗಪಿ ವದನೇ ಚೋದರ ಇಡಾ ।
ಗ್ರಹಾ ಜಿಹ್ವಾಯಾಂ ತೇ ಪರಪುರುಷ ಕರ್ಣೇ ಚ ಚಮಸಾ
ವಿಭೋ ಸೋಮೋ ವೀರ್ಯಂ ವರದ ಗಲದೇಶೇಽಪ್ಯುಪಸದಃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ತ್ವಚಿ ಛಂದಃ - in Thy skin are the Vedic Metres; ರೋಮಸು-ಅಪಿ ಕುಶಗಣಃ- - Thy hair are the Kush grass; ಚಕ್ಷುಷಿ ಘೃತಂ - Thy eyes are ghee; ಚತುರ್ಹೋತಾರಃ-ಅಂಘ್ರೌ - Thy feet are the four sacrificing priests; ಸ್ರುಗ್-ಅಪಿ ವದನೇ - Thy face is 'sruk' (the ladle used for offering); ಚ-ಉದರ ಇಡಾ - and Thy stomach the 'ida' (the vessel used for keeping the ingredients for offering); ಗ್ರಹಾ ಜಿಹ್ವಾಯಾಂ ತೇ - Thy tongue the soma pot; ಪರಪುರುಷ - O Infinite Lord!; ಕರ್ಣೇ ಚ ಚಮಸಾ - Thy ears are the chamasas (vessel used for keeping the sacrificial remnants); ವಿಭೋ - O Lord!; ಸೋಮೋ ವೀರ್ಯಂ - Thy virility is Soma; ವರದ - O Bestower of Boons!; ಗಲದೇಶೇ-ಅಪಿ-ಉಪಸದಃ - in Thy neck are the sacrifices called 'Upasat' (the subsidiary rites);
Translation
O Infinite Lord! In Thy skin are the Vedic Mantras, Thy hair are the 'kush' grass, Thy eyes are the ghee, Thy feet are the four sacrificing priests, Thy face is 'sruk',( the ladle for sacrifice) and Thy stomach is the 'Ida' (the vessel which holds the sacrificial ingredients), Thy tongue is the soma pot. O Lord! Thy ears are the chamasas (the vessel which holds the sacrificial remnants) and Thy virility is soma. O Bestower of Boons! in Thy neck are the sacrifices called Upasat, (the subsidiary rites). Thou are the embodiment of the holy Yagna.

ಮುನೀಂದ್ರೈರಿತ್ಯಾದಿಸ್ತವನಮುಖರೈರ್ಮೋದಿತಮನಾ
ಮಹೀಯಸ್ಯಾ ಮೂರ್ತ್ಯಾ ವಿಮಲತರಕೀರ್ತ್ಯಾ ಚ ವಿಲಸನ್ ।
ಸ್ವಧಿಷ್ಣ್ಯಂ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ ಸುಖರಸವಿಹಾರೀ ಮಧುರಿಪೋ
ನಿರುಂಧ್ಯಾ ರೋಗಂ ಮೇ ಸಕಲಮಪಿ ವಾತಾಲಯಪತೇ ॥10॥
Meaning
ಮುನೀಂದ್ರೈಃ-ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ- - by the various great sages; ಸ್ತವನ-ಮುಖರೈಃ-ಮೋದಿತ-ಮನಾ - who were intoning such hymns,; ಮೋದಿತ-ಮನಾ - being delighted; ಮಹೀಯಸ್ಯಾ ಮೂರ್ತ್ಯಾ - with a splendid form and; ವಿಮಲತರ-ಕೀರ್ತ್ಯಾ ಚ - with unblemished glory; ವಿಲಸನ್ - shining; ಸ್ವಧಿಷ್ಣ್ಯಂ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ - reaching Thy abode of Vaikunth; ಸುಖ-ರಸ-ವಿಹಾರೀ - O Thee! Reveling in Thy own Bliss!; ಮಧುರಿಪೋ - O Destroyer of Madhu!; ನಿರುಂಧ್ಯಾ ರೋಗಂ ಮೇ - destroy ailments of mine; ಸಕಲಂ-ಅಪಿ - all of them; ವಾತಾಲಯಪತೇ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Destroyer of Madhu! Delighted with the hymns of the sages Thou shone with Thy huge and adorable form and taintless glory and retired to Thy abode of Vaikunth, revelling in Thy innate Bliss. May Thou be pleased to eradicate all my ailments.
