ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಉತ್ತಾನಪಾದನೃಪತೇರ್ಮನುನಂದನಸ್ಯ
ಜಾಯಾ ಬಭೂವ ಸುರುಚಿರ್ನಿತರಾಮಭೀಷ್ಟಾ ।
ಅನ್ಯಾ ಸುನೀತಿರಿತಿ ಭರ್ತುರನಾದೃತಾ ಸಾ
ತ್ವಾಮೇವ ನಿತ್ಯಮಗತಿಃ ಶರಣಂ ಗತಾಽಭೂತ್ ॥1॥

Meaning
ಉತ್ತಾನಪಾದ-ನೃಪತೇಃ- - king Uttaanpaad's; ಮನು-ನಂದನಸ್ಯ - who was the son of Manu; ಜಾಯಾ ಬಭೂವ ಸುರುಚಿಃ- - wife became Suruchi; ನಿತರಾಂ-ಅಭೀಷ್ಟಾ - extremely dear; ಅನ್ಯಾ ಸುನೀತಿಃ-ಇತಿ - the other (wife) named Suneeti; ಭರ್ತುಃ-ಅನಾದೃತಾ ಸಾ - she was neglected by her husband; ತ್ವಾಂ-ಏವ ನಿತ್ಯಂ- - in Thee alone, who are eternal; ಅಗತಿಃ-ಶರಣಂ - refuge of the helpless (she); ಗತಾ-ಅಭೂತ್ - (in Thee) took refuge;

Translation
To the king Uttaanpaada, the son of Manu, his wife Suruchi was extremely dear. The other wife Suneeti being ignored by her husband, was helpless and took shelter in Thee alone who are eternal refuge of the helpless.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಂಕೇ ಪಿತುಃ ಸುರುಚಿಪುತ್ರಕಮುತ್ತಮಂ ತಂ
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಧ್ರುವಃ ಕಿಲ ಸುನೀತಿಸುತೋಽಧಿರೋಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ ।
ಆಚಿಕ್ಷಿಪೇ ಕಿಲ ಶಿಶುಃ ಸುತರಾಂ ಸುರುಚ್ಯಾ
ದುಸ್ಸಂತ್ಯಜಾ ಖಲು ಭವದ್ವಿಮುಖೈರಸೂಯಾ ॥2॥

Meaning
ಅಂಕೇ ಪಿತುಃ - on (his) father's lap; ಸುರುಚಿ-ಪುತ್ರಕಂ-ಉತ್ತಮಂ ತಂ - Suruchi's son, that Uttama,; ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಧ್ರುವಃ ಕಿಲ - seeing Dhruva indeed; ಸುನೀತಿ-ಸುತಃ-ಅಧಿರೋಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ - the son of Suneeti (who was) about to get up,; ಆಚಿಕ್ಷಿಪೇ ಕಿಲ ಶಿಶುಃ - the child was severely scolded; ಸುತರಾಂ ಸುರುಚ್ಯಾ - as a result by Suruchi; ದುಸ್ಸಂತ್ಯಜಾ ಖಲು - indeed (jealousy) cannot be given up; ಭವತ್-ವಿಮುಖೈಃ- - by those who are not devoted to Thee; ಅಸೂಯಾ - jealousy;

Translation
Seeing Uttama, Suruchi's son, seated on his father's lap, Suneeti's son Dhruva also tried to get up. But as a result, the child was severely scolded by Suruchi. Indeed, jealousy cannot be given up, by those who are not devoted to Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವನ್ಮೋಹಿತೇ ಪಿತರಿ ಪಶ್ಯತಿ ದಾರವಶ್ಯೇ
ದೂರಂ ದುರುಕ್ತಿನಿಹತಃ ಸ ಗತೋ ನಿಜಾಂಬಾಮ್ ।
ಸಾಽಪಿ ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮಗತಿಸಂತರಣಾಯ ಪುಂಸಾಂ
ತ್ವತ್ಪಾದಮೇವ ಶರಣಂ ಶಿಶವೇ ಶಶಂಸ ॥3॥

Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಮೋಹಿತೇ ಪಿತರಿ - being under the influence of Thy Maayaa, the father; ಪಶ್ಯತಿ ದಾರ್-ವಶ್ಯೇ - seeing hen-pecked; ದೂರಂ ದುರುಕ್ತಿ-ನಿಹತಃ ಸಃ - he (Dhruva) was taken aback and hurt by the cruel words; ಗತಃ ನಿಜ-ಅಂಬಾಂ - (he) went to his own mother; ಸಾ-ಅಪಿ - she also; ಸ್ವ-ಕರ್ಮ-ಗತಿ-ಸಂತರಣಾಯ - for getting over the effects of ones own actions; ಪುಂಸಾಂ - for human beings; ತ್ವತ್-ಪಾದಂ-ಏವ ಶರಣಂ - Thy feet are the only refuge; ಶಿಶವೇ ಶಶಂಸ - (thus) she advised the child;

Translation
The hen-pecked king who was under the influence of Thy Maayaa, silently looked on as Dhruva was scolded by Suruchi. Hurt for being scolded, Dhruva then went to his own mother Suneeti who advised him that the only way to overcome the evils of ones own past actions is to seek shelter at Thy feet.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಆಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ಸೋಽಪಿ ಭವದರ್ಚನನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾತ್ಮಾ
ಮಾನೀ ನಿರೇತ್ಯ ನಗರಾತ್ ಕಿಲ ಪಂಚವರ್ಷಃ ।
ಸಂದೃಷ್ಟನಾರದನಿವೇದಿತಮಂತ್ರಮಾರ್ಗ-
ಸ್ತ್ವಾಮಾರರಾಧ ತಪಸಾ ಮಧುಕಾನನಾಂತೇ ॥4॥

Meaning
ಆಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ಸಃ-ಅಪಿ - hearing, he also; ಭವತ್-ಅರ್ಚನ-ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ-ಆತ್ಮಾ - determined to devote himself to Thy worship; ಮಾನೀ ನಿರೇತ್ಯ ನಗರಾತ್ - he who had self respect, leaving the town; ಕಿಲ ಪಂಚ-ವರ್ಷಃ - (though) indeed five years of age; ಸಂದೃಷ್ಟ-ನಾರದ - meeting Naarada,; ನಿವೇದಿತ-ಮಂತ್ರ-ಮಾರ್ಗಃ- - and receiving instructions in the path of Mantra (japa); ತ್ವಾಂ-ಆರರಾಧ ತಪಸಾ - propitiated Thee by penance; ಮಧು-ಕಾನನ-ಅಂತೇ - at the end of the forest named Madhu;

Translation
The self respecting Dhruva, who was only five years of age, hearing his mother's words, became determined to worship Thee, and so left the town. In the forest of Madhuvana, he propitiated Thee by penance, following the method of Mantra japa and the Mantra given to him by Naarada, whom he had met on the way.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಾತೇ ವಿಷಣ್ಣಹೃದಯೇ ನಗರೀಂ ಗತೇನ
ಶ್ರೀನಾರದೇನ ಪರಿಸಾಂತ್ವಿತಚಿತ್ತವೃತ್ತೌ ।
ಬಾಲಸ್ತ್ವದರ್ಪಿತಮನಾಃ ಕ್ರಮವರ್ಧಿತೇನ
ನಿನ್ಯೇ ಕಠೋರತಪಸಾ ಕಿಲ ಪಂಚಮಾಸಾನ್ ॥5॥

Meaning
ತಾತೇ ವಿಷಣ್ಣ-ಹೃದಯೇ - while the father was full of remorse,; ನಗರೀಂ ಗತೇನ ಶ್ರೀನಾರದೇನ - by Shri Naarada, who had gone to the town; ಪರಿಸಾಂತ್ವಿತ-ಚಿತ್ತ-ವೃತೌ - (his) upset mind was consoled; ಬಾಲಃ-ತ್ವತ್-ಅರ್ಪಿತ-ಮನಾಃ - (meanwhile) the boy with his mind fixed on Thee; ಕ್ರಮ-ವರ್ಧಿತೇನ - with increasing; ನಿನ್ಯೇ ಕಠೋರ-ತಪಸಾ - intensity carried out severe penance; ಕಿಲ ಪಂಚ-ಮಾಸಾನ್ - indeed for five months;

Translation
The king who was full of remorse, was pacified and consoled by Naarada who had gone to the town. Dhruva, the boy with his mind fixed on Thee, spent five months in severe penance, with increasing intensity.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಾವತ್ತಪೋಬಲನಿರುಚ್ಛ್-ವಸಿತೇ ದಿಗಂತೇ
ದೇವಾರ್ಥಿತಸ್ತ್ವಮುದಯತ್ಕರುಣಾರ್ದ್ರಚೇತಾಃ ।
ತ್ವದ್ರೂಪಚಿದ್ರಸನಿಲೀನಮತೇಃ ಪುರಸ್ತಾ-
ದಾವಿರ್ಬಭೂವಿಥ ವಿಭೋ ಗರುಡಾಧಿರೂಢಃ ॥6॥

Meaning
ತಾವತ್-ತಪೋ-ಬಲ-ನಿರುಚ್ಛ್-ವಸಿತೇ - then,suffocated by the power of penance (of Dhruva); ದಿಗಂತೇ - all the directions; ದೇವ-ಅರ್ಥಿತಃ-ತ್ವಂ- - to the devas who were seeking relief, (to them) Thou; ಉದಯತ್-ಕರುಣಾ-ಆರ್ದ್ರ-ಚೇತಾಃ - with a mind surging with compassion; ತ್ವತ್-ರೂಪ-ಚಿತ್-ರಸ-ನಿಲೀನ-ಮತೇಃ - (Dhruva) whose mind was absorbed with the Supreme Consciousness Bliss, which had assumed Thy form; ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್- - in front ( of Dhruva); ಆವಿರ್ಬಭೂವಿಥ - (Thou) appeared; ವಿಭೋ - O Lord!; ಗರುಡ-ಅಧಿರೂಢಃ - mounted on Garuda;

Translation
Then, when all around in all the directions there was suffocation by the power of Dhruva's penance, the devas were seeking relief. Then, Thou surging with compassion, appeared seated on Garuda, in front of Dhruva, whose mind was absorbed in contemplation of the Supreme Consciousness Bliss which had assumed Thy form.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವದ್ದರ್ಶನಪ್ರಮದಭಾರತರಂಗಿತಂ ತಂ
ದೃಗ್ಭ್ಯಾಂ ನಿಮಗ್ನಮಿವ ರೂಪರಸಾಯನೇ ತೇ ।
ತುಷ್ಟೂಷಮಾಣಮವಗಮ್ಯ ಕಪೋಲದೇಶೇ
ಸಂಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟವಾನಸಿ ದರೇಣ ತಥಾಽಽದರೇಣ ॥7॥

Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ದರ್ಶನ - at the sight of Thee; ಪ್ರಮದ-ಭಾರ-ತರಂಗಿತಂ ತಂ - which completely overwhelmed him with waves of Bliss and ecstasy; ದೃಗ್ಭ್ಯಾಂ ನಿಮಗ್ನಂ-ಇವ - as if his eyes were submerged; ರೂಪ-ರಸಾಯನೇ ತೇ - in the nectar of Thy entrancing form; ತುಷ್ಟೂಷಮಾಣಂ- - desirous of singing Thy praise; ಅವಗಮ್ಯ - understanding (Thou); ಕಪೋಲ-ದೇಶೇ - on the cheek; ಸಂಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟವಾನ್-ಅಸಿ - Thou did touch (him); ದರೇಣ - by the conch; ತಥಾ-ಆದರೇಣ - and with great affection;

Translation
At Thy divine sight, Dhruva was completely overwhelmed and was full of the the waves of Bliss and ecstasy. As his eyes were submerged in the nectar of Thy entrancing form he was desirous of singing Thy praise. Realising his incapability of finding words, Thou with great affection touched his cheek with the conch.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಾವದ್ವಿಬೋಧವಿಮಲಂ ಪ್ರಣುವಂತಮೇನ-
ಮಾಭಾಷಥಾಸ್ತ್ವಮವಗಮ್ಯ ತದೀಯಭಾವಮ್ ।
ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚಿರಂ ಸಮನುಭೂಯ ಭಜಸ್ವ ಭೂಯಃ
ಸರ್ವೋತ್ತರಂ ಧ್ರುವ ಪದಂ ವಿನಿವೃತ್ತಿಹೀನಮ್ ॥8॥

Meaning
ತಾವತ್- - then; ವಿಬೋಧ-ವಿಮಲಂ - who had been cleansed of all taint by knowledge; ಪ್ರಣುವಂತಂ-ಏನಂ- - who was profusely praising Thee; ಅಭಾಷಥಾಃ-ತ್ವಂ- - Thou did tell (him); ಅವಗಮ್ಯ ತದೀಯ-ಭಾವಂ - knowing what he had in mind; ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಚಿರಂ ಸಮನುಭೂಯ - (that) after enjoying kingship for long; ಭಜಸ್ವ ಭೂಯಃ - attain, thereafter,; ಸರ್ವೋತ್ತರಂ ಧ್ರುವ ಪದಂ - the loftiest of status of Dhruva; ವಿನಿವೃತ್ತಿ-ಹೀನಂ - from which there is no return;

Translation
He then sang Thy praise profusely, having been purified and enlightened by pure knowledge. Knowing what he had in mind, Thou blessed him to enjoy the kingdom for long and then attain the loftiest of states, that of Dhruva, from where there is no return to lower states.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಇತ್ಯೂಚಿಷಿ ತ್ವಯಿ ಗತೇ ನೃಪನಂದನೋಽಸಾ-
ವಾನಂದಿತಾಖಿಲಜನೋ ನಗರೀಮುಪೇತಃ ।
ರೇಮೇ ಚಿರಂ ಭವದನುಗ್ರಹಪೂರ್ಣಕಾಮ-
ಸ್ತಾತೇ ಗತೇ ಚ ವನಮಾದೃತರಾಜ್ಯಭಾರಃ ॥9॥

Meaning
ಇತಿ-ಊಚಿಷಿ - having said so; ತ್ವಯಿ ಗತೇ - when Thou had gone away; ನೃಪನಂದನಃ-ಅಸೌ- - this prince; ಆನಂದಿತ-ಅಖಿಲ-ಜನಃ - pleasing all the people; ನಗರೀಂ-ಉಪೇತಃ - reached the town; ರೇಮೇ ಚಿರಂ - enjoyed for a long time; ಭವತ್-ಅನುಗ್ರಹ-ಪೂರ್ಣ-ಕಾಮಃ- - with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace; ತಾತೇ ಗತೇ ಚ ವನಂ- - and when his father had gone to the forest; ಆದೃತ-ರಾಜ್ಯ-ಭಾರಃ - taking over the administration of the kingdom;

Translation
When Thou disappeared after having said so, this prince Dhruva came back to town delighting all people. When his father had gone to the forest, taking over the administration of the kingdom, with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace, he lived happily for a long time.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಯಕ್ಷೇಣ ದೇವ ನಿಹತೇ ಪುನರುತ್ತಮೇಽಸ್ಮಿನ್
ಯಕ್ಷೈಃ ಸ ಯುದ್ಧನಿರತೋ ವಿರತೋ ಮನೂಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ।
ಶಾಂತ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನಹೃದಯಾದ್ಧನದಾದುಪೇತಾ-
ತ್ತ್ವದ್ಭಕ್ತಿಮೇವ ಸುದೃಢಾಮವೃಣೋನ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ॥10॥

Meaning
ಯಕ್ಷೇಣ - by Yaksha; ದೇವ - O Lord!; ನಿಹತೇ ಪುನಃ- - being killed, then; ಉತ್ತಮೇ-ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ - this Uttama (Dhruva's brother); ಯಕ್ಷೈಃ ಸ ಯುದ್ಧ-ನಿರತಃ - he engaged in a fight with the Yakshas; ವಿರತಃ ಮನು-ಉಕ್ತ್ಯಾ - and withdrew on Manu's advice; ಶಾಂತ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನ-ಹೃದಯಾತ್- - who was happy at the peaceful nature (of Dhruva); ಧನದಾತ್-ಉಪೇತಾತ್ - from Kuber who had approached him (Dhruva); ತ್ವತ್-ಭಕ್ತಿಂ-ಏವ ಸುದೃಢಾಂ- - Thy firm devotion alone; ಅವೃಣೋತ್- - asked for as a boon; ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ - the great souled one (Dhruva);

Translation
When Uttama, Dhruva's brother was killed by Yaksha, Dhruva battled with Yaksha, but withdrew on Manu's advice. Pleased with Dhruva's peaceful nature, Kuber came and offered him a boon, but the great soul asked only for firm devotion to Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಂತೇ ಭವತ್ಪುರುಷನೀತವಿಮಾನಯಾತೋ
ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಸಮಂ ಧ್ರುವಪದೇ ಮುದಿತೋಽಯಮಾಸ್ತೇ ।
ಏವಂ ಸ್ವಭೃತ್ಯಜನಪಾಲನಲೋಲಧೀಸ್ತ್ವಂ
ವಾತಾಲಯಾಧಿಪ ನಿರುಂಧಿ ಮಮಾಮಯೌಘಾನ್ ॥11॥

Meaning
ಅಂತೇ - finally; ಭವತ್-ಪುರುಷ-ನೀತ-ವಿಮಾನ-ಯಾತಃ - going in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants; ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಸಮಂ - along with his mother; ಧ್ರುವಪದೇ ಮುದಿತಃ-ಅಯಂ-ಆಸ್ತೇ - (he) is living happily even now in Dhruvaloka; ಏವಂ - in this manner; ಸ್ವ-ಭೃತ್ಯ-ಜನ-ಪಾಲನ-ಲೋಲ-ಧೀಃ-ತ್ವಂ - Thou who are ever eager minded to protect Thy devotees; ವಾತಾಲಯಾಧಿಪ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ನಿರುಂಧಿ - cure; ಮಮ-ಆಮಯ-ಔಘಾನ್ - my hoards of ailments;

Translation
Finally, leaving along with his mother in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants, he is even now living happily in Dhruvaloka. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are ever intent on protecting Thy devotees, cure my hoards of ailments.
