शिव मानस पूज

शिव मानस पूजा is a luminous devotional hymn composed by Adi Shankaracharya, teaching that worship can be performed inwardly even when external materials are absent. The devotee imagines a complete royal worship of Lord Shiva: seat, bath, garments, sandal paste, flowers, food, music, circumambulation, prostration, and finally the surrender of every action.

Adi Shankaracharya is remembered as the great Advaita Vedanta teacher who established the non-dual vision of the Upanishads while also composing stotrams that help ordinary devotees refine emotion into contemplation. In this hymn he does not oppose ritual worship; he interiorizes it. Every outer offering becomes a purified mental movement, showing how भक्ति and ज्ञान can strengthen one another.

Translation (भावार्थ):
O Lord, treasure of compassion and Lord of all beings, I inwardly offer you a jewel-studded seat, a bath with cool water, and divine garments. I offer sandal paste scented with musk, ornaments of many jewels, jasmine, champaka flowers, sacred bilva leaves, incense, and a shining lamp. Please accept this worship that has been formed in my heart.

Translation (भावार्थ):
In a golden vessel decorated with nine gems, I offer ghee, sweet milk-rice, five kinds of food, milk, curd, bananas, a sweet drink, many vegetable dishes, pleasant water, bright camphor, and betel leaves. O Lord, I have prepared all this mentally and with devotion; please accept it.

Translation (भावार्थ):
I offer you a royal umbrella, a pair of fly-whisks, a fan, and a spotless mirror. I offer the music of the lute, drums, and trumpets, along with song, dance, full prostration, and many forms of praise. O all-pervading Lord, I have offered this entire worship through inner resolve; please accept it.

Translation (भावार्थ):
You are my Self; my mind is Parvati; my life-breaths are your attendants; and this body is your temple. My experiences of the world become your worship, sleep becomes absorption, walking becomes circumambulation, and all speech becomes hymns. Whatever action I perform, O Shambhu, may all of it be your adoration.

Translation (भावार्थ):
Whatever offense I have committed through hands, feet, speech, body, action, hearing, sight, or mind; whatever was improper, whether done knowingly or unknowingly, please forgive all of it. Victory, victory to you, O ocean of compassion, revered great Lord Shiva, Shambhu.
