केन उपनिषद् - चतुर्थः खंडः

The fourth section of केनोपनिषत् concludes the teaching by moving from story to assimilation. After the narrative of the gods and the यक्ष, the text now states clearly that victory belongs to Brahman alone, and that all excellence in beings is due to nearness to that truth.

This section also gives practical foundation: तपस्, दम, right कर्म, and सत्यम्. In other words, realization is not mere inspiration; it is stabilized through disciplined life.

सा ब्रह्मेति होवाच ब्रह्मणो वा एतद्विजये महीयध्वमिति ततो हैव विदांचकार ब्रह्मेति ॥ 1॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
She said, "That was Brahman. In truth, this victory was Brahman's alone." Only then did Indra clearly understand that it was Brahman.

तस्माद्वा एते देवा अतितरामिवान्यांदेवान्यदग्निर्वायुरिंद्रस्ते ह्येनन्नेदिष्ठं पस्पर्शुस्ते ह्येनत्प्रथमो विदांचकार ब्रह्मेति ॥ 2॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Therefore Agni, Vayu, and Indra are said to excel the other gods, because they came nearest to that Brahman and were first to approach its recognition.

तस्माद्वा इंद्रोऽतितरामिवान्यांदेवान्स ह्येनन्नेदिष्ठं पस्पर्श स ह्येनत्प्रथमो विदांचकार ब्रह्मेति ॥ 3॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Therefore Indra is said to excel the other gods, because he came nearest to that reality and was the first among them to understand it as Brahman.

तस्यैष आदेशो यदेतद्विद्युतो व्यद्युतदा(3) इतीन् न्यमीमिषदा(3) इत्यधिदैवतम् ॥ 4॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
This is the indication regarding Brahman in the cosmic sense: like a sudden flash of lightning, like the instant of a blink.

अथाध्यात्मं यद्देतद्गच्छतीव च मनोऽनेन चैतदुपस्मरत्यभीक्ष्णं संकल्पः ॥ 5॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Now, in the inner sense: the mind seems to move toward That, and through repeated recollection and resolve, one keeps turning toward it again and again.

तद्ध तद्वनं नाम तद्वनमित्युपासितव्यं स य एतदेवं वेदाभि हैनगं सर्वाणि भूतानि संवांछंति ॥ 6॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
That indeed is called "Tadvanam," the Adorable, and should be meditated upon as such. Whoever knows thus becomes one whom all beings naturally revere and seek.

उपनिषदं भो ब्रूहीत्युक्ता त उपनिषद्ब्राह्मीं वाव त उपनिषदमब्रूमेति ॥ 7॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
When asked, "Sir, teach the Upanishadic secret," the teacher replied, "Indeed, we have taught to you this Upanishad concerning Brahman."

तसै तपो दमः कर्मेति प्रतिष्ठा वेदाः सर्वांगानि सत्यमायतनम् ॥ 8॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
For this realization, austerity, self-restraint, and right action are the foundation; the Vedas are its supporting limbs, and truth is its abiding ground.

यो वा एतामेवं वेदापहत्य पाप्मानमनंते स्वर्गे लोके ज्येये प्रतितिष्ठति प्रतितिष्ठति ॥ 9॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Whoever knows this in this way, having cast off impurity, becomes established in the infinite and supreme state - firmly established indeed.

॥ इति केनोपनिषदि चतुर्थः खंडः ॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Thus ends the fourth section of the Kena Upanishad.

ॐ आप्यायंतु ममांगानि वाक्प्राणश्चक्षुः श्रोत्रमथो बलमिंद्रियाणि च सर्वाणि । सर्वं ब्रह्मौपनिषदं माऽहं ब्रह्म निराकुर्यां मा मा ब्रह्म निराकरोदनिराकरणमस्त्वनिराकरणं मेऽस्तु । तदात्मनि निरते य उपनिषत्सु धर्मास्ते मयि संतु ते मयि संतु ।

Translation (भावार्थ):
May my limbs, speech, life-force, eyes, ears, strength, and all faculties be nourished. May I never reject Brahman, and may Brahman never be hidden from me. May the disciplines taught in the Upanishads abide in me.

ॐ शांति@ः शांति@ः शांति#ः ॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Om. Peace, peace, peace.

॥ इति केनोपनिषत् ॥

Translation (भावार्थ):
Thus ends the Kena Upanishad.
