श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता मूलम् - द्वादशोऽध्यायः

श्लोकः
अर्जुन उवाच
एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते ।
ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning
अर्जुनः उवाच — Arjuna said; एवम् — thus; सतत — always; युक्ताः — engaged; ये — those who; भक्ताः — devotees; त्वाम् — You; पर्युपासते — properly worship; ये — those who; च — also; अपि — again; अक्षरम् — beyond the senses; अव्यक्तम् — the unmanifested; तेषाम् — of them; के — who; योग-वित्-तमाः — the most perfect in knowledge of yoga.

Translation
Arjuna inquired: Which are considered to be more perfect, those who are always properly engaged in Your devotional service or those who worship the impersonal Brahman, the unmanifested?

श्लोकः
श्रीभगवानुवाच
मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ।
श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — Bhagavan Sri Krishna said; मयि — upon Me; आवेश्य — fixing; मनः — the mind; ये — those who; माम् — Me; नित्य — always; युक्ताः — engaged; उपासते — worship; श्रद्धया — with faith; परया — transcendental; उपेताः — endowed; ते — they; मे — by Me; युक्त-तमाः — most perfect in yoga; मताः — are considered.

Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: Those who fix their minds on My personal form and are always engaged in worshiping Me with great and transcendental faith are considered by Me to be most perfect.

श्लोकः
ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यमव्यक्तं पर्युपासते ।
सर्वत्रगमचिंत्यं च कूटस्थमचलं ध्रुवम् ॥ 3 ॥
सन्नियम्येंद्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः ।
ते प्राप्‍नुवंति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning
ये — those who; तु — but; अक्षरम् — that which is beyond the perception of the senses; अनिर्देश्यम् — indefinite; अव्यक्तम् — unmanifested; पर्युपासते — completely engage in worshiping; सर्वत्र-गम् — all-pervading; अचिंत्यम् — inconceivable; च — also; कूट-स्थम् — unchanging; अचलम् — immovable; ध्रुवम् — fixed; सन्नियम्य — controlling; इंद्रिय-ग्रामम् — all the senses; सर्वत्र — everywhere; सम-बुद्धयः — equally disposed; ते — they; प्राप्नुवंति — achieve; माम् — Me; एव — certainly; सर्व-भूत-हिते — for the welfare of all living entities; रताः — engaged.

Translation
But those who fully worship the unmanifested, that which lies beyond the perception of the senses, the all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, fixed and immovable – the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth – by controlling the various senses and being equally disposed to everyone, such persons, engaged in the welfare of all, at last achieve Me.

श्लोकः
क्ल‍एशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम् ।
अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भ‍इरवाप्यते ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning
क्लेशः — trouble; अधिक-तरः — very much; तेषाम् — of them; अव्यक्त — to the unmanifested; आसक्त — attached; चेतसाम् — of those whose minds; अव्यक्ता — toward the unmanifested; हि — certainly; गतिः — progress; दुःखम् — with trouble; देह-वद्भिः — by the embodied; अवाप्यते — is achieved.

Translation
For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifested, impersonal feature of the Supreme, advancement is very troublesome. To make progress in that discipline is always difficult for those who are embodied.

श्लोकः
ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि सन्न्यस्य मत्पराः ।
अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायंत उपासते ॥ 6 ॥
तेषामहं समुद्धर्ता मृत्युसंसारसागरात् ।
भवामि न चिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् ॥ 7 ॥

Meaning
ये — those who; तु — but; सर्वाणि — all; कर्माणि — activities; मयि — unto Me; सन्न्यस्य — giving up; मत्-पराः — being attached to Me; अनन्येन — without division; एव — certainly; योगेन — by practice of such bhakti-yoga; माम् — upon Me; ध्यायंतः — meditating; उपासते — worship; तेषाम् — of them; अहम् — I; समुद्धर्ता — the deliverer; मृत्यु — of death; संसार — in material existence; सागरात् — from the ocean; भवामि — I become; न — not; चिरात् — after a long time; पार्थ — O son of Prithā; मयि — upon Me; आवेशित — fixed; चेतसाम् — of those whose minds.

Translation
But those who worship Me, giving up all their activities unto Me and being devoted to Me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon Me, having fixed their minds upon Me, O son of Prithā – for them I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death.

श्लोकः
मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय ।
निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning
मयि — upon Me; एव — certainly; मनः — mind; आधत्स्व — fix; मयि — upon Me; बुद्धिम् — intelligence; निवेशय — apply; निवसिष्यसि — you will live; मयि — in Me; एव — certainly; अतः ऊर्ध्वम् — thereafter; न — never; संशयः — doubt.

Translation
Just fix your mind upon Me, the Supreme Truth, and engage all your intelligence in Me. Thus you will live in Me always, without a doubt.

श्लोकः
अथ चित्तं समाधातुं न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम् ।
अभ्यासयोगेन ततो मामिच्छाप्‍तुं धनंजय ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning
अथ — if, therefore; चित्तम् — mind; समाधातुम् — to fix; न — not; शक्नोषि — you are able; मयि — upon Me; स्थिरम् — steadily; अभ्यास-योगेन — by the practice of devotional service; ततः — then; माम् — Me; इच्चा — desire; आप्तुम् — to get; धनम्-जय — O winner of wealth, Arjuna.

Translation
My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga. In this way develop a desire to attain Me.

श्लोकः
अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव ।
मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥ 10 ॥

Meaning
अभ्यासे — in practice; अपि — even if; असमर्थः — unable; असि — you are; मत्-कर्म — My work; परमः — dedicated to; भव — become; मत्-अर्थम् — for My sake; अपि — even; कर्माणि — work; कुर्वन् — performing; सिद्धिम् — perfection; अवाप्स्यसि — you will achieve.

Translation
If you cannot practice the regulations of bhakti-yoga, then just try to work for Me, because by working for Me you will come to the perfect stage.

श्लोकः
अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं मद्योगमाश्रितः ।
सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान् ॥ 11 ॥

Meaning
अथ — even though; एतत् — this; अपि — also; अशक्तः — unable; असि — you are; कर्तुम् — to perform; मत् — unto Me; योगम् — in devotional service; आश्रितः — taking refuge; सर्व-कर्म — of all activities; फल — of the results; त्यागम् — renunciation; ततः — then; कुरु — do; यत-आत्म-वान् — self-situated.

Translation
If, however, you are unable to work in this consciousness of Me, then try to act giving up all results of your work and try to be self-situated.

श्लोकः
श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते ।
ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छांतिरनंतरम् ॥ 12 ॥

Meaning
श्रेयः — better; हि — certainly; ज्ञानम् — knowledge; अभ्यासात् — than practice; ज्ञानात् — than knowledge; ध्यानम् — meditation; विशिष्यते — is considered better; ध्यानात् — than meditation; कर्म-फल-त्यागः — renunciation of the results of fruitive action; त्यागात् — by such renunciation; शांतिः — peace; अनंतरम् — thereafter.

Translation
If you cannot take to this practice, then engage yourself in the cultivation of knowledge. Better than knowledge, however, is meditation, and better than meditation is renunciation of the fruits of action, for by such renunciation one can attain peace of mind.

श्लोकः
अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च ।
निर्ममो निरहंकारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥ 13 ॥
संतुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः ।
मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भ‍क्तः स मे प्रियः ॥ 14 ॥

Meaning
अद्वेष्टा — nonenvious; सर्व-भूतानाम् — toward all living entities; मैत्रः — friendly; करुणः — kindly; एव — certainly; च — also; निर्ममः — with no sense of proprietorship; निरहंकारः — without false ego; सम — equal; दुःख — in distress; सुखः — and happiness; क्षमी — forgiving; संतुष्टः — satisfied; सततम् — always; योगी — one engaged in devotion; यत-आत्मा — self-controlled; दृढ-निश्चयः — with determination; मयि — upon Me; अर्पित — engaged; मनः — mind; बुद्धिः — and intelligence; यः — one who; मत्-भक्तः — My devotee; सः — he; मे — to Me; प्रियः — dear.

Translation
One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false ego, who is equal in both happiness and distress, who is tolerant, always satisfied, self-controlled, and engaged in devotional service with determination, his mind and intelligence fixed on Me – such a devotee of Mine is very dear to Me.

श्लोकः
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः ।
हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥ 15 ॥

Meaning
यस्मात् — from whom; न — never; उद्विजते — are agitated; लोकः — people; लोकात् — from people; न — never; उद्विजते — is disturbed; च — also; यः — anyone who; हर्ष — from happiness; अमर्ष — distress; भय — fear; उद्वेगैः — and anxiety; मुक्तः — freed; यः — who; सः — anyone; च — also; मे — to Me; प्रियः — very dear.

Translation
He by whom no one is put into difficulty and who is not disturbed by anyone, who is equipoised in happiness and distress, fear and anxiety, is very dear to Me.

श्लोकः
अनपेक्षः श‍उचिर्दक्ष उदासीनो गतव्यथः ।
सर्वारंभपरित्यागी यो मद्भ‍क्तः स मे प्रियः ॥ 16 ॥

Meaning
अनपेक्षः — neutral; शुचिः — pure; दक्षः — expert; उदासीनः — free from care; गत-व्यथः — freed from all distress; सर्व-आरंभ — of all endeavors; परित्यागी — renouncer; यः — anyone who; मत्-भक्तः — My devotee; सः — he; मे — to Me; प्रियः — very dear.

Translation
My devotee who is not dependent on the ordinary course of activities, who is pure, expert, without cares, free from all pains, and not striving for some result, is very dear to Me.

श्लोकः

Meaning
यः — one who; न — never; हृष्यति — takes pleasure; न — never; द्वेष्टि — grieves; न — never; शोचति — laments; न — never; कांक्षति — desires; शुभ — of the auspicious; अशुभ — and the inauspicious; परित्यागी — renouncer; भक्ति-मान् — devotee; यः — one who; सः — he is; मे — to Me; प्रियः — dear.

Translation
One who neither rejoices nor grieves, who neither laments nor desires, and who renounces both auspicious and inauspicious things – such a devotee is very dear to Me.

श्लोकः

Meaning
समः — equal; शत्रौ — to an enemy; च — also; मित्रे — to a friend; च — also; तथा — so; मान — in honor; अपमानयोः — and dishonor; शीत — in cold; उष्ण — heat; सुख — happiness; दुःखेषु — and distress; समः — equipoised; संग-विवर्जितः — free from all association; तुल्य — equal; निंदा — in defamation; स्तुतिः — and repute; मौनी — silent; संतुष्टः — satisfied; येन केनचित् — with anything; अनिकेतः — having no residence; स्थिर — fixed; मतिः — determination; भक्ति-मान् — engaged in devotion; मे — to Me; प्रियः — dear; नरः — a man.

Translation
One who is equal to friends and enemies, who is equipoised in honor and dishonor, heat and cold, happiness and distress, fame and infamy, who is always free from contaminating association, always silent and satisfied with anything, who doesn’t care for any residence, who is fixed in knowledge and who is engaged in devotional service – such a person is very dear to Me.

श्लोकः
ये तु धर्मामृतमिदं यथोक्तं पर्युपासते ।
श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः ॥ 20 ॥

Meaning
ये — those who; तु — but; धर्म — of religion; अमृतम् — nectar; इदम् — this; यथा — as; उक्तम् — said; पर्युपासते — completely engage; श्रद्दधानाः — with faith; मत्-परमाः — taking Me, the Supreme Lord, as everything; भक्ताः — devotees; ते — they; अतीव — very, very; मे — to Me; प्रियाः — dear.

Translation
Those who follow this imperishable path of devotional service and who completely engage themselves with faith, making Me the supreme goal, are very, very dear to Me.
