श्रीभगवानुवाच
अभयं सत्त्वसंशउद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः ।
दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम् ॥ 1 ॥
अहिंसा सत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागः शांतिरपैशउनम् ।
दया भूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वं मार्दवं ह्रीरचापलम् ॥ 2 ॥
तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता ।
भवंति संपदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — Bhagavan Sri Krishna said; अभयम् — fearlessness; सत्त्व-संशुद्धिः — purification of one’s existence; ज्ञान — in knowledge; योग — of linking up; व्यवस्थितिः — the situation; दानम् — charity; दमः — controlling the mind; च — and; यज्ञः — performance of sacrifice; च — and; स्वाध्यायः — study of Vedic literature; तपः — austerity; आर्जवम् — simplicity; अहिंसा — nonviolence; सत्यम् — truthfulness; अक्रोधः — freedom from anger; त्यागः — renunciation; शांतिः — tranquillity; अपैशुनम् — aversion to fault-finding; दया — mercy; भूतेषु — towards all living entities; अलोलुप्त्वम् — freedom from greed; मार्दवम् — gentleness; ह्रीः — modesty; अचापलम् — determination; तेजः — vigor; क्षमा — forgiveness; धृतिः — fortitude; शौचम् — cleanliness; अद्रोहः — freedom from envy; न — not; अति-मानिता — expectation of honor; भवंति — are; संपदम् — the qualities; दैवीम् — the transcendental nature; अभिजातस्य — of one who is born of; भारत — O son of Bharata.
Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; renunciation; tranquillity; aversion to faultfinding; compassion for all living entities; freedom from covetousness; gentleness; modesty; steady determination; vigor; forgiveness; fortitude; cleanliness; and freedom from envy and from the passion for honor – these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.
श्लोकः
दंभो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च ।
अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ संपदमासुरीम् ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning
दंभः — pride; दर्पः — arrogance; अभिमानः — conceit; च — and; क्रोधः — anger; पारुष्यम् — harshness; एव — certainly; च — and; अज्ञानम् — ignorance; च — and; अभिजातस्य — of one who is born of; पार्थ — O son of Prithā; संपदम् — the qualities; आसुरीम् — of the demoniac nature.
Translation
Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance – these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature, O son of Prithā.
श्लोकः
दैवी संपद्विमोक्षाय निबंधायासुरी मता ।
मा शउचः संपदं दैवीमभिजातोऽसि पांडव ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning
दैवी — transcendental; संपत् — assets; विमोक्षाय — meant for liberation; निबंधाय — for bondage; आसुरी — demoniac qualities; मता — are considered; मा — do not; शुचः — worry; संपदम् — assets; दैवीम् — transcendental; अभिजातः — born of; असि — you are; पांडव — O son of Pāṇḍu.
Translation
The transcendental qualities are conducive to liberation, whereas the demoniac qualities make for bondage. Do not worry, O son of Pāṇḍu, for you are born with the divine qualities.
श्लोकः
द्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोकेऽस्मिंदैव आसुर एव च ।
दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे शऋणु ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
द्वौ — two; भूत-सर्गौ — created living beings; लोके — in the world; अस्मिन् — this; दैवः — godly; आसुरः — demoniac; एव — certainly; च — and; दैवः — the divine; विस्तरशः — at great length; प्रोक्तः — said; आसुरम् — the demoniac; पार्थ — O son of Prithā; मे — from Me; शृणु — just hear.
Translation
O son of Prithā, in this world there are two kinds of created beings. One is called divine and the other demoniac. I have already explained to you at length the divine qualities. Now hear from Me of the demoniac.
श्लोकः
प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः ।
न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
प्रवृत्तिम् — acting properly; च — also; निवृत्तिम् — not acting improperly; च — and; जनाः — persons; न — never; विदुः — know; आसुराः — of demoniac quality; न — never; शौचम् — cleanliness; न — nor; अपि — also; च — and; आचारः — behavior; न — never; सत्यम् — truth; तेषु — in them; विद्यते — there is.
Translation
Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them.
श्लोकः
असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम् ।
अपरस्परसंभूतं किमन्यत्कामहैतुकम् ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
असत्यम् — unreal; अप्रतिष्ठम् — without foundation; ते — they; जगत् — the cosmic manifestation; आहुः — say; अनीश्वरम् — with no controller; अपरस्पर — without cause; संभूतम् — arisen; किं अन्यत् — there is no other cause; काम-हैतुकम् — it is due to lust only.
Translation
They say that this world is unreal, with no foundation, no God in control. They say it is produced of sex desire and has no cause other than lust.
श्लोकः
एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः ।
प्रभवंत्युग्रकर्माणः क्षयाय जगतोऽहिताः ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
एताम् — this; दृष्टिम् — vision; अवष्टभ्य — accepting; नष्ट — having lost; आत्मानः — themselves; अल्प-बुद्धयः — the less intelligent; प्रभवंति — flourish; उग्र-कर्माणः — engaged in painful activities; क्षयाय — for destruction; जगतः — of the world; अहिताः — unbeneficial.
Translation
Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world.
श्लोकः
काममाश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दंभमानमदान्विताः ।
मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान्प्रवर्तंतेऽशउचिव्रताः ॥ 10 ॥
Meaning
कामम् — lust; आश्रित्य — taking shelter of; दुष्पूरम् — insatiable; दंभ — of pride; मान — and false prestige; मद-अन्विताः — absorbed in the conceit; मोहात् — by illusion; गृहीत्वा — taking; असत् — nonpermanent; ग्राहान् — things; प्रवर्तंते — they flourish; अशुचि — to the unclean; व्रताः — avowed.
Translation
Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent.
श्लोकः
चिंतामपरिमेयां च प्रलयांतामुपाश्रिताः ।
कामोपभोगपरमा एतावदिति निश्चिताः ॥ 11 ॥
आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः ।
ईहंते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसंचयान् ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
चिंताम् — fears and anxieties; अपरिमेयाम् — immeasurable; च — and; प्रलय-अंताम् — unto the point of death; उपाश्रिताः — having taken shelter of; काम-उपभोग — sense gratification; परमाः — the highest goal of life; एतावत् — thus; इति — in this way; निश्चिताः — having ascertained; आशा-पाश — entanglements in a network of hope; शतैः — by hundreds; बद्धाः — being bound; काम — of lust; क्रोध — and anger; परायणाः — always situated in the mentality; ईहंते — they desire; काम — lust; भोग — sense enjoyment; अर्थम् — for the purpose of; अन्यायेन — illegally; अर्थ — of wealth; संचयान् — accumulation.
Translation
They believe that to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification.
श्लोकः
इदमद्य मया लब्धमिमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम् ।
इदमस्तीदमपि मे भविष्यति पुनर्धनम् ॥ 13 ॥
असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि ।
ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी ॥ 14 ॥
आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया ।
यक्ष्ये दास्यामि मोदिष्य इत्यज्ञानविमोहिताः ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning
इदम् — this; अद्य — today; मया — by me; लब्धम् — gained; इमम् — this; प्राप्स्ये — I shall gain; मनः-रथम् — according to my desires; इदम् — this; अस्ति — there is; इदम् — this; अपि — also; मे — mine; भविष्यति — it will increase in the future; पुनः — again; धनम् — wealth; असौ — that; मया — by me; हतः — has been killed; शत्रुः — enemy; हनिष्ये — I shall kill; च — also; अपरान् — others; अपि — certainly; ईश्वरः — the lord; अहम् — I am; अहम् — I am; भोगी — the enjoyer; सिद्धः — perfect; अहम् — I am; बल-वान् — powerful; सुखी — happy; आढ्यः — wealthy; अभिजन-वान् — surrounded by aristocratic relatives; अस्मि — I am; कः — who; अन्यः — other; अस्ति — there is; सदृशः — like; मया — me; यक्ष्ये — I shall sacrifice; दास्यामि — I shall give charity; मोदिष्ये — I shall rejoice; इति — thus; अज्ञान — by ignorance; विमोहिताः — deluded.
Translation
The demoniac person thinks: “So much wealth do I have today, and I will gain more according to my schemes. So much is mine now, and it will increase in the future, more and more. He is my enemy, and I have killed him, and my other enemies will also be killed. I am the lord of everything. I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest man, surrounded by aristocratic relatives. There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give some charity, and thus I shall rejoice.” In this way, such persons are deluded by ignorance.
श्लोकः
अनेकचित्तविभ्रांता मोहजालसमावृताः ।
प्रसक्ताः कामभोगेषु पतंति नरकेऽशउचौ ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
अनेक — numerous; चित्त — by anxieties; विभ्रांताः — perplexed; मोह — of illusions; जाल — by a network; समावृताः — surrounded; प्रसक्ताः — attached; काम-भोगेषु — to sense gratification; पतंति — they glide down; नरके — into hell; अशुचौ — unclean.
Translation
Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell.
श्लोकः
आत्मसंभाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः ।
यजंते नामयज्ञैस्ते दंभेनाविधिपूर्वकम् ॥ 17 ॥
Meaning
आत्म-संभाविताः — self-complacent; स्तब्धाः — impudent; धन-मान — of wealth and false prestige; मद — in the delusion; अन्विताः — absorbed; यजंते — they perform sacrifice; नाम — in name only; यज्ञैः — with sacrifices; ते — they; दंभेन — out of pride; अविधि-पूर्वकम् — without following any rules and regulations.
Translation
Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules or regulations.
श्लोकः
अहंकारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः ।
मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषंतोऽभ्यसूयकाः ॥ 18 ॥
Meaning
अहंकारम् — false ego; बलम् — strength; दर्पम् — pride; कामम् — lust; क्रोधम् — anger; च — also; संश्रिताः — having taken shelter of; माम् — Me; आत्म — in their own; पर — and in other; देहेषु — bodies; प्रद्विषंतः — blaspheming; अभ्यसूयकाः — envious.
Translation
Bewildered by false ego, strength, pride, lust and anger, the demons become envious of Me, who is situated in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and blaspheme against the real religion.
श्लोकः
तानहं द्विषतः क्रूरान्संसारेषु नराधमान् ।
क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशउभानासुरीष्वेव योनिषु ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning
तान् — those; अहम् — I; द्विषतः — envious; क्रूरान् — mischievous; संसारेषु — into the ocean of material existence; नर-अधमान् — the lowest of mankind; क्षिपामि — I put; अजस्रम् — forever; अशुभान् — inauspicious; आसुरीषु — demoniac; एव — certainly; योनिषु — into the wombs.
Translation
Those who are envious and mischievous, who are the lowest among men, I perpetually cast into the ocean of material existence, into various demoniac species of life.
श्लोकः
आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि ।
मामप्राप्यैव कौंतेय ततो यांत्यधमां गतिम् ॥ 20 ॥
Meaning
आसुरीम् — demoniac; योनिम् — species; आपन्नाः — gaining; मूढाः — the foolish; जन्मनि जन्मनि — in birth after birth; माम् — Me; अप्राप्य — without achieving; एव — certainly; कौंतेय — O son of Kuntī; ततः — thereafter; यांति — go; अधमाम् — condemned; गतिम् — destination.
Translation
Attaining repeated birth amongst the species of demoniac life, O son of Kuntī, such persons can never approach Me. Gradually they sink down to the most abominable type of existence.
श्लोकः
त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः ।
कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत् ॥ 21 ॥
Meaning
त्रि-विधम् — of three kinds; नरकस्य — of hell; इदम् — this; द्वारम् — gate; नाशनम् — destructive; आत्मनः — of the self; कामः — lust; क्रोधः — anger; तथा — as well as; लोभः — greed; तस्मात् — therefore; एतत् — these; त्रयम् — three; त्यजेत् — one must give up.
Translation
There are three gates leading to this hell – lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.
श्लोकः
एतैर्विमुक्तः कौंतेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः ।
आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परां गतिम् ॥ 22 ॥
Meaning
एतैः — from these; विमुक्तः — being liberated; कौंतेय — O son of Kuntī; तमः-द्वारैः — from the gates of ignorance; त्रिभिः — of three kinds; नरः — a person; आचरति — performs; आत्मनः — for the self; श्रेयः — benediction; ततः — thereafter; याति — he goes; पराम् — to the supreme; गतिम् — destination.
Translation
The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, O son of Kuntī, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination.
श्लोकः
यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः ।
न स सिद्धिमवाप्नोति न सुखं न परां गतिम् ॥ 23 ॥
Meaning
यः — anyone who; शास्त्र-विधिम् — the regulations of the scriptures; उत्सृज्य — giving up; वर्तते — remains; काम-कारतः — acting whimsically in lust; न — never; सः — he; सिद्धिम् — perfection; अवाप्नोति — achieves; न — never; सुखम् — happiness; न — never; पराम् — the supreme; गतिम् — perfectional stage.
Translation
He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.
श्लोकः
तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ ।
ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥ 24 ॥
Meaning
तस्मात् — therefore; शास्त्रम् — the scriptures; प्रमाणम् — evidence; ते — your; कार्य — duty; अकार्य — and forbidden activities; व्यवस्थितौ — in determining; ज्ञात्वा — knowing; शास्त्र — of scripture; विधान — the regulations; उक्तम् — as declared; कर्म — work; कर्तुम् — do; इह — in this world; अर्हसि — you should.
Translation
One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated.
