Meaning
ਗਰਲਂ - poison; ਤਰਲ-ਅਨਲਂ - as molten fire; ਪੁਰਸ੍ਤਾਤ੍- - first and foremost; ਜਲਧੇਃ- - from the ocean; ਉਦ੍ਵਿਜਗਾਲ - emerged; ਕਾਲਕੂਟਮ੍ - (which was ) the Kaalkoota poison; ਅਮਰ-ਸ੍ਤੁਤਿਵਾਦ੍-ਮੋਦਨਿਘ੍ਨਃ - pleased by the praises sung by the Devas; ਗਿਰਿਸ਼ਃ- - Shiva; ਤਤ੍-ਨਿਪਪੌ - drank that; ਭਵਤ੍-ਪ੍ਰਿਯਾਰ੍ਥਮ੍ - to please Thee;
Translation
First and foremost there emerged from the ocean the Kaalakoota poison which was like molten fire. The gods propitiated Shiva by singing hymns of praise to him. He then drank the poison to please Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਿਮਥਤ੍ਸੁ ਸੁਰਾਸੁਰੇਸ਼ੁ ਜਾਤਾ
ਸੁਰਭਿਸ੍ਤਾਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਸ਼ੁ ਨ੍ਯਧਾਸ੍ਤ੍ਰਿਧਾਮਨ੍ ।
ਹਯਰਤ੍ਨਮਭੂਦਥੇਭਰਤ੍ਨਂ
ਦ੍ਯੁਤਰੁਸ਼੍ਚਾਪ੍ਸਰਸਃ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ੁ ਤਾਨਿ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਵਿਮਥਤ੍ਸੁ ਸੁਰ-ਅਸੁਰੇਸ਼ੁ - as were churning, the Devas and Asuras; ਜਾਤਾ ਸੁਰਭਿਃ- - was born (came out) Kaamadhenu (the divine cow); ਤਾਮ੍-ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਿਸ਼ੁ ਨ੍ਯਧਾਃ- - to the rishis (Thou) gave her; ਤ੍ਰਿਧਾਮਨ੍ - O Lord of the three worlds!; ਹਯ-ਰਤ੍ਨਮ੍-ਅਭੂਤ੍- - the jewel of a horse (Uchchaishrava) emerged; ਅਥ-ਇਭ-ਰਤ੍ਨਮ੍ - then the great elephant (Airaavata); ਦ੍ਯੁ-ਤਰੁਃ- - the celestial tree (Kalpaka); ਚ-ਅਪ੍ਸਰਸਃ - and Apsaras (celestial nymphs); ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ੁ ਤਾਨਿ - to the Devas (Thou gave) them;
Translation
As the Devas and Asuras were churning, the divine cow Kaamadhenu came out.Thou gave it to the sages. O Lord of the three worlds! Then emerged the jewel of a horse (Uchchaishrava), then the great elephant (Airaavata), then the celestial tree (Kalpaka) and the Apsaras (divine damsels) appeared. Thou gave them to the gods.

ਜਗਦੀਸ਼ ਭਵਤ੍ਪਰਾ ਤਦਾਨੀਂ
ਕਮਨੀਯਾ ਕਮਲਾ ਬਭੂਵ ਦੇਵੀ ।
ਅਮਲਾਮਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ ਯਾਂ ਵਿਲੋਲਃ
ਸਕਲੋਪਿ ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਯਾਂਬਭੂਵ ਲੋਕਃ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਜਗਦੀਸ਼ - O Lord of the Worlds!; ਭਵਤ੍ਪਰਾ - devoted to Thee; ਤਦਾਨੀਂ - then; ਕਮਨੀਯਾ - enchanting; ਕਮਲਾ ਬਭੂਵ ਦੇਵੀ - Lakshmi Devi emerged; ਅਮਲਾਮ੍-ਅਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ ਯਾਂ - by seeing her pure form; ਵਿਲੋਲਃ ਸਕਲਃ-ਅਪਿ - fascinated everyone was; ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਯਾਮ੍-ਬਭੂਵ ਲੋਕਃ - and agitated with desire became the whole world;
Translation
O Lord of the worlds! Devoted to Thee, then the enchanting Lakshmi Devi emerged. Seeing her pure and perfect form everyone was fascinated and the world got agitated with desire.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਦਤ੍ਤਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੇ ਤਦੈਵ ਦੇਵ੍ਯੈ
ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ੇਂਦ੍ਰੋ ਮਣਿਪੀਠਿਕਾਂ ਵ੍ਯਤਾਰੀਤ੍ ।
ਸਕਲੋਪਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਭਿਸ਼ੇਚਨੀਯੈਃ
ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਯਸ੍ਤਾਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਿਗੀਰ੍ਭਿਰਭ੍ਯਸ਼ਿਂਚਨ੍ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਦਤ੍ਤਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਯੇ - having set her heart on Thee; ਤਦਾ-ਏਵ ਦੇਵ੍ਯੈ - then alone, by the goddess; ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ੇਂਦ੍ਰਃ - Indra; ਮਣਿਪੀਠਿਕਾਂ - a bejewelled throne; ਵ੍ਯਤਾਰੀਤ੍ - gave; ਸਕਲ-ਉਪਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਅਭਿਸ਼ੇਚਨੀਯੈਃ - with the objects of consecration which were brought by all; ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਯਃ- - the Rishis; ਤਾਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਿ-ਗੀਰ੍ਭਿਃ-ਅਭ੍ਯਸ਼ਿਂਚਨ੍ - consecrated her, also with Vedic hymns;
Translation
The goddess who had set her heart on Thee was given a bejewelled throne by Indra. With the objects which everyone had brought, the sages consecrated her, while they sang Vedic hymns.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਭਿਸ਼ੇਕਜਲਾਨੁਪਾਤਿਮੁਗ੍ਧ-
ਤ੍ਵਦਪਾਂਗੈਰਵਭੂਸ਼ਿਤਾਂਗਵਲ੍ਲੀਮ੍ ।
ਮਣਿਕੁਂਡਲਪੀਤਚੇਲਹਾਰ-
ਪ੍ਰਮੁਖੈਸ੍ਤਾਮਮਰਾਦਯੋਨ੍ਵਭੂਸ਼ਨ੍ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਅਭਿਸ਼ੇਕ-ਜਲ-ਅਨੁਪਾਤਿ- - with the holy waters pouring; ਮੁਗ੍ਧ-ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਅਪਾਂਗੈਃ- - followed by Thy enamoured side glances; ਅਵਭੂਸ਼ਿਤਾ-ਅਂਗ-ਵਲ੍ਲੀਮ੍ - her creeper like body was adorned; ਮਣਿ-ਕੁਂਡਲ-ਪੀਤ-ਚੇਲ-ਹਾਰ-ਪ੍ਰਮੁਖੈਃ- - (and with) gem studded earrings, yellow silk robe and necklaces; ਤਾਮ੍-ਅਮਰ-ਆਦਯਃ-ਅਨ੍ਵਭੂਸ਼ਨ੍ - the gods adorned her further;
Translation
As the holy waters were pouring on her, her creeper like body was adorned by Thy enamoured side glances. The gods further bedecked her with gem studded earrings, yellow silk robe and necklaces etc.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਰਣਸ੍ਰਜਮਾਤ੍ਤਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਗਨਾਦਾਂ
ਦਧਤੀ ਸਾ ਕੁਚਕੁਂਭਮਂਦਯਾਨਾ ।
ਪਦਸ਼ਿਂਜਿਤਮਂਜੁਨੂਪੁਰਾ ਤ੍ਵਾਂ
ਕਲਿਤਵ੍ਰੀਲਵਿਲਾਸਮਾਸਸਾਦ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਵਰਣ-ਸ੍ਰਜਮ੍- - the wedding garland; ਆਤ੍ਤ-ਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਂਗ-ਨਾਦਾਮ੍ - having humming bees on it; ਦਧਤੀ ਸਾ - holding she (Lakshmi Devi); ਕੁਚ-ਕੁਂਭ-ਮਂਦ-ਯਾਨਾ - with a gait slowed by the weight of the pot like breasts; ਪਦ-ਸ਼ਿਂਜਿਤ-ਮਂਜੁ-ਨੂਪੁਰਾ - with beautiful anklets making a pleasant sound; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ - (towards) Thee; ਕਲਿਤ-ਵ੍ਰੀਲ-ਵਿਲਾਸਮ੍- - displaying a little coyness; ਆਸਸਾਦ - approached;
Translation
Lakshmi Devi holding a wedding garland having humming bees on it, approached Thee with a gait slowed down by the weight of her heavy breasts. As she walked, the beautiful anklets adorning her shapely feet spread a delightful sound and a touch of coyness on her face enhanced her beauty.

ਗਿਰਿਸ਼ਦ੍ਰੁਹਿਣਾਦਿਸਰ੍ਵਦੇਵਾਨ੍
ਗੁਣਭਾਜੋਪ੍ਯਵਿਮੁਕ੍ਤਦੋਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਾਨ੍ ।
ਅਵਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਯ ਸਦੈਵ ਸਰ੍ਵਰਮ੍ਯੇ
ਨਿਹਿਤਾ ਤ੍ਵਯ੍ਯਨਯਾਪਿ ਦਿਵ੍ਯਮਾਲਾ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਗਿਰਿਸ਼-ਦ੍ਰੁਹਿਣ-ਆਦਿ-ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਦੇਵਾਨ੍ - Shiva Brahmaa and other gods; ਗੁਣ-ਭਾਜਃ-ਅਪਿ- - though endowed with virtues; ਅਵਿਮੁਕ੍ਤ-ਦੋਸ਼-ਲੇਸ਼ਾਨ੍ - were not free from slight discrepancies; ਅਵਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਯ ਸਦਾ-ਏਵ - finding that always; ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਰਮ੍ਯੇ - (Thou) perfect in everyway; ਨਿਹਿਤਾ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ- - put on Thee; ਅਨਯਾ-ਅਪਿ - by her also; ਦਿਵ੍ਯ-ਮਾਲਾ - the divine garland;
Translation
She realised that all other gods as Shiva Brahmaa and others though endowed with virtues, were not free from all defects. Thou who are perfect in every way, she put the divine garland on Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਉਰਸਾ ਤਰਸਾ ਮਮਾਨਿਥੈਨਾਂ
ਭੁਵਨਾਨਾਂ ਜਨਨੀਮਨਨ੍ਯਭਾਵਾਮ੍ ।
ਤ੍ਵਦੁਰੋਵਿਲਸਤ੍ਤਦੀਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਸ਼੍ਰੀ-
ਪਰਿਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਯਾ ਪਰਿਪੁਸ਼੍ਟਮਾਸ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮ੍ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਉਰਸਾ ਤਰਸਾ - by Thy bosom, quickly; ਮਮਾਨਿਥ-ਐਨਾਮ੍ - (taking her) and honoring her; ਭੁਵਨਾਨਾਂ ਜਨਨੀਮ੍ - the mother of the worlds; ਅਨਨ੍ਯ ਭਾਵਾਮ੍ - who is devoted to no other than Thee; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਉਰੋ-ਵਿਲਸਤ੍- - on Thy bosom sporting; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਈਕ੍ਸ਼ਣ-ਸ਼੍ਰੀ-ਪਰਿਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਯਾ - by the showering of her auspicious glances; ਪਰਿਪੁਸ਼੍ਟਮ੍-ਆਸ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵਮ੍ - prosperity was every where;
Translation
Lakshmi Devi, the mother of the universe, was immediately taken by Thee on Thy bosom giving her due respect and honor as she was solely devoted to Thee. Shining on Thy bosom she showered compassionate glances all around which brought prosperity to the whole world.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਤਿਮੋਹਨਵਿਭ੍ਰਮਾ ਤਦਾਨੀਂ
ਮਦਯਂਤੀ ਖਲੁ ਵਾਰੁਣੀ ਨਿਰਾਗਾਤ੍ ।
ਤਮਸਃ ਪਦਵੀਮਦਾਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਮੇਨਾ-
ਮਤਿਸਮ੍ਮਾਨਨਯਾ ਮਹਾਸੁਰੇਭ੍ਯਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਅਤਿ-ਮੋਹਨ-ਵਿਭ੍ਰਮਾ - highly exciting and deluding; ਤਦਾਨੀਂ - then; ਮਦਯਂਤੀ ਖਲੁ - intoxicating indeed; ਵਾਰੁਣੀ ਨਿਰਾਗਾਤ੍ - liquor emerged; ਤਮਸਃ ਪਦਵੀਮ੍- - the source of all sins and vice; ਅਦਾਃ- ਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਏਨਾਮ੍- - Thou gave her; ਅਤਿ-ਸਮ੍ਮਾਨਨਯਾ - with great honor; ਮਹਾ-ਅਸੁਰੇਭ੍ਯਃ - to the great Asuras;
Translation
Then the highly exciting, deluding and intoxicating liquor gushed forth. This, the source of sins and vices, Thou ceremoniously gave to the great Asuras.

ਤਰੁਣਾਂਬੁਦਸੁਂਦਰਸ੍ਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ
ਨਨੁ ਧਨ੍ਵਂਤਰਿਰੁਤ੍ਥਿਤੋਂਬੁਰਾਸ਼ੇਃ ।
ਅਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ ਕਲਸ਼ੇ ਵਹਨ੍ ਕਰਾਭ੍ਯਾ-
ਮਖਿਲਾਰ੍ਤਿਂ ਹਰ ਮਾਰੁਤਾਲਯੇਸ਼ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਤਰੁਣ-ਅਂਬੁਦ-ਸੁਂਦਰਃ- - beautiful like fresh rain clouds; ਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ ਨਨੁ - Then Thou indeed; ਧਨ੍ਵਂਤਰਿਃ-ਉਤ੍ਥਿਤਃ- - in the form of Dhanwantari emerged; ਅਂਬੁਰਾਸ਼ੇਃ - from the ocean; ਅਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ ਕਲਸ਼ੇ ਵਹਨ੍ - nectar carrying in a pot; ਕਰਾਭ੍ਯਾਮ੍- - with (Thy) two hands; ਅਖਿਲ-ਆਰ੍ਤਿਂ ਹਰ - be pleased to remove all my ailments; ਮਾਰੁਤਾਲਯੇਸ਼ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
From the ocean, then, Thou emerged beautiful like a fresh rain cloud in the form of Dhanwantari holding in Thy two hands the pot of nectar. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Deign to remove all my ailments.
