ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವತ್ಸೇವೋತ್ಕಸ್ಸೌಭರಿರ್ನಾಮ ಪೂರ್ವಂ
ಕಾಲಿನ್ದ್ಯನ್ತರ್ದ್ವಾದಶಾಬ್ದಂ ತಪಸ್ಯನ್ ।
ಮೀನವ್ರಾತೇ ಸ್ನೇಹವಾನ್ ಭೋಗಲೋಲೇ
ತಾರ್ಕ್ಷ್ಯಂ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾದೈಕ್ಷತಾಗ್ರೇ ಕದಾಚಿತ್ ॥1॥

Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಸೇವ-ಉತ್ಕಃ- - in serving Thee (who was) eager; ಸೌಭರಿಃ-ನಾಮ - Saubhari named (sage); ಪೂರ್ವಂ ಕಾಲಿನ್ದಿ-ಅನ್ತಃ- - long ago, in the Kaalindi (Yamuna); ದ್ವಾದಶ-ಆಬ್ದಮ್ - for twelve years; ತಪಸ್ಯನ್ - performing austerities; ಮೀನವ್ರಾತೇ - to the fish; ಸ್ನೇಹವಾನ್ ಭೋಗಲೋಲೇ - became attached (who were) sporting; ತಾರ್ಕ್ಷ್ಯಮ್ - Garuda; ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್-ಐಕ್ಷತ-ಅಗ್ರೇ - with his own eyes saw right in front; ಕದಾಚಿತ್ - once;

Translation
Long ago, the sage named Saubhari who was eager to serve Thee, remained submerged in the waters of Kaalindi, for twelve years, performing austerities. He became attached to the fish who kept sporting there. Once he saw Garuda right in front of his eyes.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವದ್ವಾಹಂ ತಂ ಸಕ್ಷುಧಂ ತೃಕ್ಷಸೂನುಂ
ಮೀನಂ ಕಞ್ಚಿಜ್ಜಕ್ಷತಂ ಲಕ್ಷಯನ್ ಸಃ ।
ತಪ್ತಶ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಶಪ್ತವಾನತ್ರ ಚೇತ್ತ್ವಂ
ಜನ್ತೂನ್ ಭೋಕ್ತಾ ಜೀವಿತಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಮೋಕ್ತಾ ॥2॥

Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ವಾಹಂ - Thy mount; ತಂ ಸಕ್ಷುಧಂ ತೃಕ್ಷಸೂನುಂ - him (who was) hungry (that) Garuda; ಮೀನಂ ಕಞ್ಚಿತ್- - a fish; ಜಕ್ಷತಂ ಲಕ್ಷಯನ್ - eating having seen; ಸ ತಪ್ತಃ- ಚಿತ್ತೇ - that (Saubhari) with agitated mind; ಶಪ್ತವಾನ್- - cursed; ಅತ್ರ ಚೇತ್-ತ್ವಂ - here if you; ಜನ್ತೂನ್ ಭೋಕ್ತಾ - creatures eat; ಜೀವಿತಂ ಚ-ಅಪಿ - life and also; ಮೋಕ್ತಾ - (will) lose;

Translation
Thy mount that Garuda who was hungry and was eating a fish. Seeing that, Saubhari was mentally very agitated and cursed Garuda saying that he would lose his life if he ate any creatures there.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಾಲೇ ಕಾಲಿಯಃ ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲದರ್ಪಾತ್
ಸರ್ಪಾರಾತೇಃ ಕಲ್ಪಿತಂ ಭಾಗಮಶ್ನನ್ ।
ತೇನ ಕ್ರೋಧಾತ್ತ್ವತ್ಪದಾಮ್ಭೋಜಭಾಜಾ
ಪಕ್ಷಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಸ್ತದ್ದುರಾಪಂ ಪಯೋಽಗಾತ್ ॥3॥

Meaning
ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಾಲೇ - at that time; ಕಾಲಿಯಃ ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲ-ದರ್ಪಾತ್ - Kaaliya (the serpent) for his powerful venom's pride; ಸರ್ಪ-ಆರಾತೇಃ ಕಲ್ಪಿತಂ - for the enemy of the serpents (Garuda) set apart; ಭಾಗಮ್-ಅಶ್ನನ್ - portion, eating; ತೇನ ಕ್ರೋಧಾತ್- - by him in anger; ತ್ವತ್-ಪದ-ಅಮ್ಭೋಜ-ಭಾಜಾ - to Thy lotus feet devoted; ಪಕ್ಷ-ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತಃ- - smitten by the wings; ತತ್-ದುರಾಪಮ್ - to him (inexcessible); ಪಯಃ-ಅಗಾತ್ - waters of Yamuna entered;

Translation
At that time, Kaaliya the serpent was full of pride due to the power of his poison. He ate away the offerings set apart for Garuda, the enemy of serpents. Angered at this Garuda who is devoted to Thy lotus feet, smote Kaaliya with his wings. Kaaliya took refuge in the waters of Yamuna (Kaalindi), which had become prohibited for Garuda because of a curse of a sage.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಘೋರೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸೂರಜಾನೀರವಾಸೇ
ತೀರೇ ವೃಕ್ಷಾ ವಿಕ್ಷತಾಃ ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲವೇಗಾತ್ ।
ಪಕ್ಷಿವ್ರಾತಾಃ ಪೇತುರಭ್ರೇ ಪತನ್ತಃ
ಕಾರುಣ್ಯಾರ್ದ್ರಂ ತ್ವನ್ಮನಸ್ತೇನ ಜಾತಮ್ ॥4॥

Meaning
ಘೋರೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ - (when) that cruel one; ಸೂರಜಾ-ನೀರ-ವಾಸೇ - in the Yamuna waters was living; ತೀರೇ ವೃಕ್ಷಾ - on the banks, the trees; ವಿಕ್ಷತಾಃ ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲ-ವೇಗಾತ್ - dried up due to the power of the poison; ಪಕ್ಷಿವ್ರಾತಾಃ ಪೇತುಃ- - the birds fell; ಅಭ್ರೇ ಪತನ್ತಃ - (when) in the skies flying; ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ-ಆರ್ದ್ರಮ್ - melted in compassion; ತ್ವತ್-ಮನಃ- - Thy heart; ತೇನ ಜಾತಮ್ - by this became;

Translation
As the cruel one was living in the waters of Yamuna, the daughter of the sun, the trees on the banks of the river dried up due to the power of the poison. The birds who flew in the sky above, dropped down dead. Thy heart melted in compassion and was moved with pity seeing the plight of the creatures.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಾಲೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನೇಕದಾ ಸೀರಪಾಣಿಂ
ಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಯಾತೇ ಯಾಮುನಂ ಕಾನನಾನ್ತಮ್ ।
ತ್ವಯ್ಯುದ್ದಾಮಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮಭೀಷ್ಮೋಷ್ಮತಪ್ತಾ
ಗೋಗೋಪಾಲಾ ವ್ಯಾಪಿಬನ್ ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲತೋಯಮ್ ॥5॥

Meaning
ಕಾಲೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್- - at that time; ಏಕದಾ - once; ಸರಿಪಾಣಿಂ ಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ - Balaraam leaving behind; ಯಾತೇ ಯಾಮುನಂ - (Thou) had gone to Yamuna; ಕಾನನ-ಅನ್ತಂ ತ್ವಯಿ- - at the forest's end Thou (had gone); ಉದ್ದಾಮ-ಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮ- - intense summer (causing); ಭೀಷ್ಮ-ಊಷ್ಮ-ತಪ್ತಾ - great heat (by which) parched; ಗೋ-ಗೋಪಾಲಾ - cows and cowherds; ವ್ಯಾಪಿಬನ್ - drank; ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲ-ತೋಯಮ್ - the poisoned water;

Translation
At that time, once Thou had gone to the wood's end near the Yamuna , unaccompanied by Balaraam. In the intense summer heat, the throats of the cattle and the cowherds were parched. So they happened to drink the water of the river which was poisoned.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಶ್ಯಜ್ಜೀವಾನ್ ವಿಚ್ಯುತಾನ್ ಕ್ಷ್ಮಾತಲೇ ತಾನ್
ವಿಶ್ವಾನ್ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ನಚ್ಯುತ ತ್ವಂ ದಯಾರ್ದ್ರಃ ।
ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯೋಪಾನ್ತಂ ಜೀವಯಾಮಾಸಿಥ ದ್ರಾಕ್
ಪೀಯೂಷಾಮ್ಭೋವರ್ಷಿಭಿಃ ಶ್ರೀಕಟಕ್ಷೈಃ ॥6॥

Meaning
ನಶ್ಯತ್-ಜೀವಾನ್ - with lost lives; ವಿಚ್ಯುತಾನ್ ಕ್ಷ್ಮಾತಲೇ - fallen on the ground; ತಾನ್ ವಿಶ್ವಾನ್ ಪಶ್ಯನ್- - them all seeing; ಅಚ್ಯುತ ತ್ವಂ ದಯಾರ್ದ್ರಃ - O Changeless One! Thou overcome with pity; ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ-ಉಪಾನ್ತಂ - going near; ಜೀವಯಾಮಾಸಿಥ - revived them; ದ್ರಾಕ್ - soon; ಪೀಯೂಷ-ಅಮ್ಭೋ-ವರ್ಷಿಭಿಃ - nectar like water showering; ಶ್ರೀಕಟಾಕ್ಷೈಃ - (with Thy) auspicious glances;

Translation
They had all lost their lives and had fallen on the ground. O Changeless One! Thou were overcome with pity and approached them. Thou shed Thy auspicious glances on them which were like showering nectar, which soon revived them.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಿಂ ಕಿಂ ಜಾತೋ ಹರ್ಷವರ್ಷಾತಿರೇಕಃ
ಸರ್ವಾಙ್ಗೇಷ್ವಿತ್ಯುತ್ಥಿತಾ ಗೋಪಸಙ್ಘಾಃ ।
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾಽಗ್ರೇ ತ್ವಾಂ ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತಂ ತದ್ವಿದನ್ತ-
ಸ್ತ್ವಾಮಾಲಿಙ್ಗನ್ ದೃಷ್ಟನಾನಾಪ್ರಭಾವಾಃ ॥7॥

Meaning
ಕಿಂ ಕಿಂ ಜಾತಃ - what, what happened; ಹರ್ಷ-ವರ್ಷಾ-ಅತಿರೇಕಃ - bliss showering profusely; ಸರ್ವ-ಅಙ್ಗೇಷು- - in all the limbs; ಇತಿ-ಉತ್ಥಿತಾ - thus being revived (and saying); ಗೋಪಸಙ್ಘಾಃ - the group of Gopas; ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ-ಅಗ್ರೇ ತ್ವಾಂ - seeing in front Thee; ತ್ವತ್-ಕೃತಂ - Thy accomplishments; ತತ್-ವಿದನ್ತಃ- - that realising; ತ್ವಾಮ್-ಆಲಿಙ್ಗನ್ - embracing Thee; ದೃಷ್ಟ-ನಾನಾ-ಪ್ರಭಾವಾಃ - (who) had seen various glories of Thee;

Translation
The Gopas were revived and experienced a profuse showering of bliss in all their limbs, and exclaimed saying 'O what, what has happened?' Then seeing Thee in front they realised that this strange bliss was Thy doing, because they had seen Thy glorious deeds before.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಗಾವಶ್ಚೈವಂ ಲಬ್ಧಜೀವಾಃ ಕ್ಷಣೇನ
ಸ್ಫೀತಾನನ್ದಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ ।
ದ್ರಾಗಾವವ್ರುಃ ಸರ್ವತೋ ಹರ್ಷಬಾಷ್ಪಂ
ವ್ಯಾಮುಞ್ಚನ್ತ್ಯೋ ಮನ್ದಮುದ್ಯನ್ನಿನಾದಾಃ ॥8॥

Meaning
ಗಾವಃ-ಚ-ಏವಂ - and cows also; ಲಬ್ಧ-ಜೀವಾಃ - revived; ಕ್ಷಣೇನ - in an instant; ಸ್ಫೀತ-ಆನನ್ದಾಃ- - very joyfully; ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ - and Thee seeing; ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ ದ್ರಾಕ್ - in front quickly; ಆವವ್ರುಃ ಸರ್ವತಃ - surrounded Thee every where; ಹರ್ಷ-ವಾಷ್ಪಂ - joyful tears; ವ್ಯಾಮುಞ್ಚನ್ತ್ಯಃ - shedding; ಮನ್ದಮ್-ಉದ್ಯನ್-ನಿನಾದಾಃ - softly raising a sound (lowing);

Translation
In the same manner the cows also were revived very quickly. Seeing Thee in front they gathered around Thee affectionately and shed joyful tears as they were also lowing.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ರೋಮಾಞ್ಚೋಽಯಂ ಸರ್ವತೋ ನಃ ಶರೀರೇ
ಭೂಯಸ್ಯನ್ತಃ ಕಾಚಿದಾನನ್ದಮೂರ್ಛಾ ।
ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯೋಽಯಂ ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲವೇಗೋ ಮುಕುನ್ದೇ-
ತ್ಯುಕ್ತೋ ಗೋಪೈರ್ನನ್ದಿತೋ ವನ್ದಿತೋಽಭೂಃ ॥9॥

Meaning
ರೋಮಾಞ್ಚಃ-ಅಯಂ - horripilation this; ಸರ್ವತಃ ನಃ ಶರೀರೇ - all over our bodies; ಭೂಯಸೀ-ಅನ್ತಃ - intense inside; ಕದಾಚಿತ್-ಆನನ್ದ-ಮೂರ್ಛಾ - in some wonderful bliss intoxication; ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯಃ-ಅಯಂ - this is wonderful; ಕ್ಷ್ವೇಲವೇಗಃ - the poison action; ಮುಕುನ್ದ- - O Mukund; ಇತಿ-ಉಕ್ತಃ - thus (Thou being) told; ಗೋಪೈಃ-ನನ್ದಿತಃ - by the Gopas (Thou were) congratulated; ವನ್ದಿತಃ-ಅಭೂಃ - (and) Thou were praised;

Translation
O Mukunda! We have horripilation all over our bodies. There is intense intoxication of bliss inside. The action of this poison is wonderful!' As they said so, the Gopas congratulated Thee and worshipped Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಏವಂ ಭಕ್ತಾನ್ ಮುಕ್ತಜೀವಾನಪಿ ತ್ವಂ
ಮುಗ್ಧಾಪಾಙ್ಗೈರಸ್ತರೋಗಾಂಸ್ತನೋಷಿ ।
ತಾದೃಗ್ಭೂತಸ್ಫೀತಕಾರುಣ್ಯಭೂಮಾ
ರೋಗಾತ್ ಪಾಯಾ ವಾಯುಗೇಹಾಧಿವಾಸ ॥10॥

Meaning
ಏವಂ ಭಕ್ತಾನ್ - in this manner (Thy) devotees; ಮುಕ್ತ-ಜೀವಾನ್-ಅಪಿ - even though they had lost their lives; ತ್ವಂ - Thou; ಮುಗ್ಧ-ಅಪಾಙ್ಗೈಃ- - by (Thy) charming glances; ಅಸ್ತರೋಗಾನ್- - were (made) devoid of diseases; ತನೋಷಿ - made; ತಾದೃಕ್-ಭೂತ- - such becoming; ಸ್ಫೀತ-ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ-ಭೂಮಾ - O Thou full of merciful greatness!; ರೋಗಾತ್ ಪಾಯಾ - from disease release (me); ವಾಯುಗೇಹಾಧಿವಾಸ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;

Translation
In this manner, by Thy charming glances, the devotees who had lost their lives were revived and were rendered devoid of diseases. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are full of such merciful greatness, release me from disease.
