અત્રેઃ પુત્રતયા પુરા ત્વમનસૂયાયાં હિ દત્તાભિધો
જાતઃ શિષ્યનિબંધતંદ્રિતમનાઃ સ્વસ્થશ્ચરન્ કાંતયા ।
દૃષ્ટો ભક્તતમેન હેહયમહીપાલેન તસ્મૈ વરા-
નષ્ટૈશ્વર્યમુખાન્ પ્રદાય દદિથ સ્વેનૈવ ચાંતે વધમ્ ॥1॥
Meaning
અત્રેઃ પુત્રતયા - as the son of the sage Atri; પુરા ત્વમ્- - long ago, Thou; અનસૂયાયાં હિ - to Anasooyaa indeed; દત્ત-અભિધઃ જાતઃ - as Dattatreya was born; શિષ્ય-નિબંધ - by Thy disciples' pesterings; તંદ્રિત-મનાઃ - mentally tired; સ્વસ્થઃ-ચરન્ કાંતયા - (Thou) peacefully moved about with Thy wife; દૃષ્ટઃ ભક્તતમેન - seen by the great devotee,; હેહય-મહીપાલેન તસ્મૈ - the king of Hehayaa, (Kaartaviryaarjuna), to him; વરાન્-અષ્ટ-ઐશ્વર્ય-મુખાન્ - the boons of the eight Sidhis; પ્રદાય દદિથ - giving, also gave; સ્વેન-એવ - by thyself alone; ચ-અંતે વધમ્ - in the end, death;
Translation
Long ago Thou were born as Dattatreya to the sage Atri and Anasooyaa. Mentally tired by the pesterings of Thy various disciples, Thou wandered about with Thy wife immersed in blissful peace. Thus Thou were seen by the great devotee Kaartaviryaarjuna, the king of Hehaya. Pleased, Thou bestowed on him all psychic powers consisting of the eight Sidhis and also promised him death at Thy hands in the end.

સત્યં કર્તુમથાર્જુનસ્ય ચ વરં તચ્છક્તિમાત્રાનતં
બ્રહ્મદ્વેષિ તદાખિલં નૃપકુલં હંતું ચ ભૂમેર્ભરમ્ ।
સંજાતો જમદગ્નિતો ભૃગુકુલે ત્વં રેણુકાયાં હરે
રામો નામ તદાત્મજેષ્વવરજઃ પિત્રોરધાઃ સમ્મદમ્ ॥2॥
Meaning
સત્યં કર્તુમ્- - to fulfill; અથ-અર્જુનસ્ય ચ વરં - and then the boon given to Kaartviryaarjuna; તત્-શક્તિ-માત્રા-નતં - (who were) just a little bit subdued by his valour alone; બ્રહ્નદ્વેષિ તત્-અખિલં - who were impious, that whole; નૃપકુલં હંતું - the clan of kings to kill; ચ ભૂમેઃ-ભરમ્ - and (who were) burden to the earth; સંજાતઃ જમદગ્નિતઃ - (Thou) were born of Jamadagni; ભૃગુકુલે - in the line of Bhrigus; ત્વં રેણુકાયાં - Thou to Renuka; હરે - O Lord!; રામઃ નામ - by the name Raama; તત્-આત્મજેષુ - among his (Jamadgni,s) sons; અવરજઃ - as the youngest; પિત્રોઃ-અધાઃ સમ્મદમ્ - to the parents gave great joy;
Translation
To fulfill the boon given to Kaartaviryaarjuna, Thou were born to Jamadagni and Renuka in the line of the Bhrigus, by the name Raama. Thou were the youngest among Jamadagni's sons and gave Thy parents great joy. Thy purpose to be born as Raama was also to kill the whole clan of kings who were very impious and were a burden on the earth, and were partly held in check only by Kaartaviryarjuna's valour.

લબ્ધામ્નાયગણશ્ચતુર્દશવયા ગંધર્વરાજે મના-
ગાસક્તાં કિલ માતરં પ્રતિ પિતુઃ ક્રોધાકુલસ્યાજ્ઞયા ।
તાતાજ્ઞાતિગસોદરૈઃ સમમિમાં છિત્વાઽથ શાંતાત્ પિતુ-
સ્તેષાં જીવનયોગમાપિથ વરં માતા ચ તેઽદાદ્વરાન્ ॥3॥
Meaning
લબ્ધ-આમ્નાયગણઃ- - gaining (the knowledge of) all the Vedas; ચતુર્દશ-વયા - by the age of fourteen; ગંધર્વરાજે - in Gandharva king (Chitraratha); મનાક્-આસક્તાં કિલ - a little bit attached, indeed; માતરં પ્રતિ - Thy mother, towards her; પિતુઃ ક્રોધ-આકુલસ્ય-આજ્ઞયા - by Thy greatly enraged father's command; તાત-આજ્ઞાતિગ-સોદરૈઃ - who did not carry out the father,s command, Thy brothers; સમમ્-ઇમાં છિત્વા- - along with them, her cutting off; અથ શાંતાત્ પિતુઃ - then, who had calmed down, Thy father, from him; તેષાં જીવન યોગમ્-આપિથ વરં - their life, to be restored requested the boon; માતા ચ - and Thy mother also; તે-અદાત્-વરાન્ - gave Thee boons;
Translation
By the age of fourteen years Thou acquired the knowledge of the Vedas. Thy father was greatly enraged with Thy mother who was a little bit attached to the Gandharva king Chitraratha. By the command of Thy father Thou cut of Thy mother's head and also of Thy brothers' as they had failed to carry out the same order of Thy father. After Thy father had calmed down, as a boon from him, Thou got to restore them to life. Thy mother also being pleased gave Thee boons.

પિત્રા માતૃમુદે - by Thy father, for Thy mother's pleasure; સ્તવ-આહૃત- - by prayer was brought; વિયત્-ધેનોઃ- - the heavenly cow (Kaamdhenu); નિજાત્-આશ્રમાત્ - from Thy aashrama; પ્રસ્થાય-અથ - setting out then,; ભૃગોઃ-ગિરા - on Bhrigu's words; હિમગિરૌ-આરાધ્ય ગૌરીપતિમ્ - in the Himaalayaas, worshipping Shiva; લબ્ધ્વા-તત્-પરશું - got his battle axe; તત્-ઉક્ત-દનુજ-છેદી - by him pointed out, that asura (Thou) killed; મહા-અસ્ત્રાદિકં પ્રાપ્તઃ - various divine missiles having got; મિત્રમ્-અથ- - as a friend; અકૃત્-વ્રણ-મુનિં - Akrit-vrana sage; પ્રાપ્ય-અગમઃ સ્વ-આશ્રમમ્ - getting, went to Thy aashrama;
Translation
To please Thy mother Renuka, Thy father Jamadagni, brought by prayer the heavenly cow Kaamdhenu to his aashrama. On the advice of Bhrigu, Thou set out from Thy aashrama to the Himaalayaa and worshipped Shiva. Thou were bestowed with his battle-axe and other various divine missiles, and killed the asura pointed out by him.Then making friends with sage Akritvrana, Thou returned to Thy aashrama.

આખેટોપગતોઽર્જુનઃ સુરગવીસંપ્રાપ્તસંપદ્ગણૈ-
સ્ત્વત્પિત્રા પરિપૂજિતઃ પુરગતો દુર્મંત્રિવાચા પુનઃ ।
ગાં ક્રેતું સચિવં ન્યયુંક્ત કુધિયા તેનાપિ રુંધન્મુનિ-
પ્રાણક્ષેપસરોષગોહતચમૂચક્રેણ વત્સો હૃતઃ ॥5॥
Meaning
આખેટ-ઉપગતઃ-અર્જુનઃ - for hunting who had come, Kaartaveeryaarjuna,; સુરગવી-સંપ્રાપ્ત-સંપદ્ગણૈઃ- - by the celestial cow getting the various riches; ત્વત્-પિત્રા પરિપૂજિતઃ - by Thy father well entertained; પુર-ગતઃ દુર્મંત્રિ-વાચા - returned to his town, by the ill advice; પુનઃ ગાં ક્રેતું - again, the cow to buy; સચિવં ન્યયુંક્ત - appointed his minister; કુધિયા તેન- - by the evil minded him; અપિ રુંધન્- - even as he was obstructing; મુનિ-પ્રાણ-ક્ષેપ - the sage was killed; સરોષ-ગો- - the enraged cow; હત-ચમૂ-ચક્રેણ - killed (by the soldiers emerging from her) the whole army; વત્સઃ હૃતઃ - (but) the calf was stolen;
Translation
The king Kiraatarjuna came hunting to the forest and was treated well by Thy father with the riches and luxuries obtained from the celestial cow Kaamadhenu. When the king returned to his town, he was ill advised by his ministers to buy the cow. The king sent an emissary for the purpose and as Thy father, the sage tried to resist his taking away of the cow, he was killed. Several warriors emerged from the furious divine cow and destroyed the whole army. But the calf was stolen.

Meaning
શુક્ર-ઉજ્જીવિત - by Shukra (who was) brought back to life; તાત-વાક્ય - by Thy father's words; ચલિત-ક્રોધઃ-અથ - Thou whose anger increased,then; સખ્યા સમં વિભ્રત્ - with Thy friends shining; ધ્યાત-મહોદર-ઉપનિહિતં - meditated upon Mahodara, (from him) brought; ચાપં કુઠારં શરાન્ - bow, battle-axe and arrows; આરૂઢઃ સહ-વાહ-યંતૃક રથં - boarding, with horses and the charioteer the chariot; માહિષ્મતીમ્-આવિશન્ - Maahishmati entering; વાગ્ભિઃ-વત્સમ્- - by words, the calf; અદાશુષિ ક્ષિતિપતૌ - did not give back, when the king; સંપ્રાસ્તુથાઃ સઙરમ્ - started the battle;
Translation
Thy father was brought back to life by Shukraachaarya. When Thy father related the whole incident Thou were very angry. With Thy friend Akritavrana Thou meditated upon Mahodara who then equipped Thee with bow, arrows and the battle axe. Boarding the chariot with the horses and the charioteer, Thou entered Maahishmati. Even when the king was requested, he did not give the calf back, Thou started the battle.

પુત્રાણામ્-અયુતેન - with sons ten thousand sons; સપ્તદશભિઃ-ચ-અક્ષૌહિણીભિઃ- - and seventeen Akshauhini (armies); મહા-સેનાનીભિઃ- - great commanders; અનેક-મિત્ર-નિવહૈઃ- - and numerous friends; વ્યાજૃંભિત-આયોધનઃ - fiercely fighting the battle; સદ્યઃ-ત્વત્ક- - soon by Thy; કુઠાર-બાણ-વિદલન્- - battle-axe and arrows destroying; નિશ્શેષ-સૈન્ય-ઉત્કરઃ - (whose) entire army; ભીતિ-પ્રદ્રુત- - of fear who had fled; નષ્ટ-શિષ્ટ-તનયઃ - and so were saved from being killed, with these left over sons; ત્વામ્-આપતત્ - Thee attacked; હેહયઃ - the king of Hehaya, i.e., Kartaveeryaarjuna;
Translation
Kaartveerya with his ten thousand sons and seventeen Akshauhini armies and numerous friends and great commanders fiercely fought the battle. Soon by Thy battle axe and arrows the entire army was destroyed and all his sons were killed except those who had fled in fright. The king of Hehaya then attacked Thee.

Meaning
લીલા-વારિત - cleverly impounded; નર્મદા જલ - the river Narmadaa's waters; વલત્ - almost drowning (by releasing the waters suddenly); લંકેશ-ગર્વ-અપહ- - Raavana, and his pride destroying; શ્રીમત્- - O! Thyself; બાહુ-સહસ્ર-મુક્ત - by his thousand arms who wielded; બહુ-શસ્ત્ર-અસ્ત્રં - innumerable weapons; નિરુંધન્-અમુમ્ - blocking him ((Kaartveeryaarjuna); ચક્રે ત્વયિ-અથ - the discus used on Thee, then; વૈષ્ણવે-અપિ વિફલે - even the Vaishnava (discus) was powerless; બુદ્ધ્વા હરિં ત્વામ્ - knowing Thee as Hari; મુદા ધ્યાયંતં - with joy, meditating; છિત-સર્વ-દોષમ્- - (he whose) all sins were purified; અવધીઃ સઃ-અગાત્ - Thou killed, and he went; પરં તે પદમ્ - to Thy Supreme abode;
Translation
Kaartaveerya had once with his thousand arms cleverly impounded the waters of the river Narmadaa, and almost drowning Raavana had destroyed his pride who was meditating on the banks downstream. That Kaartaveerya, wielded various weapons with those thousand arms and finding the Vaishnava discus also powerless against Thee, knew Thee to be Hari, and with joy meditated upon Thee. Then, he whose sins were purified, was killed by Thee and he went to Thy Supreme abode.

ભૂયઃ-અમર્ષિત- - thereafter greatly angered; હેહય-આત્મજ-ગણૈઃ- - by the king of Hehaya's sons; તાતે હતે - (when) Thy father was killed; રેણુકામ્-આઘ્નાનાં હૃદયં - Renuka was beating her breast; નિરીક્ષ્ય બહુશઃ - seeing many times; ઘોરાં પ્રતિજ્ઞાં વહન્ - taking a terrible vow; ધ્યાન-આનીત- - by meditation brought; રથ-આયુધઃ-ત્વમ્-અકૃથા - chariot and weapons Thou made; વિપ્ર-દ્રુહઃ ક્ષત્રિયાન્ - the enemies of Brahmins, the Kshatriyas; દિક્-ચક્રેષુ કુઠારયન્ - in all the quarters fighting with battle axe; વિશિખયન્ નિઃક્ષત્રિયામ્ - rendering devoid of Kshatriyaas; મેદિનીમ્ - the earth;
Translation
Thereafter the sons of the king of Hehaya were in great rage and killed Thy father. Grieved at this Thy mother Renuka was wailing and beating her breast many times, seeing this Thou took a terrible vow. Thou then got the chariot and weapon by meditation and fought against the Kshatriyaas who were enemies of the Brahmins. With the battle axe Thou killed the Kshatriyaas in all the quarters and rendered the earth devoid of them.

Meaning
તાત-ઉજ્જીવનકૃત્- - Thy father reviving; નૃપાલક-કુલં - the tribe of Kshatriyaas; ત્રિઃ-સપ્ત-કૃત્વઃ જયન્ - thrice seven times (21) defeating; સંતર્પ્ય-અથ - performing tarpana then; સમંત-પંચક-મહારક્ત-હૃદૌઘે - in Samant-Panchaka, the vast lake of blood,; પિતૃન્ યજ્ઞે - to the ancestors , in sacrifice; ક્ષ્મામ્-અપિ કાશ્યપ-આદિષુ - the land also, to Kaashyapa and other Rishis; દિશન્ સાલ્વેન યુધ્યન્ પુનઃ - giving away, with Saalva fighting again; કૃષ્ણઃ-અમુમ્-નિહનિષ્યતિ- - Krishna will kill him; ઇતિ શમિતઃ યુદ્ધાત્ - thus restrained from the fight; કુમારૈઃ ભવાન્ - by the Sanat kumaaras, Thou (were);
Translation
Thy father was revived and Thou defeated the clan of kings twenty one times. Thou then performed tarpana to the ancestors in the vast lake of blood named Samant Panchaka. In the sacrifice Thou also gave away land to Kaashyapa and other Rishis. Thou fighting again with Saalva, refrained, on being restrained by Sanata Kumaars who told Thee that he was destined to be killed by Krishna.

ન્યસ્ય-અસ્ત્રાણિ - abandoning all weapons; મહેંદ્ર-ભૂભૃતિ - on the Mahendra mountain; તપઃ-તન્વન્ - penance performing; પુનઃ-મજ્જિતાં - thereafter submerged; ગોકર્ણ-અવધિ - up to Gokarna; સાગરેણ ધરણીં દૃષ્ટ્વા- - by the sea, the earth seeing; અર્થિતઃ-તાપસૈઃ ધ્યાત- - requested by the sages by meditation; ઇષ્વાસ-ધૃત-અનલ-અસ્ત્ર- - the bow bearing the fire missile; ચકિતં સિંધુમ્ - the frightened ocean; સ્રુવ-ક્ષેપણાત્- - by the throwing of the ladle; ઉત્સાર્ય-ઉદ્ધૃત-કેરલઃ - pushing back, scooped out Kerala; ભૃગુપતે વાતેશ - O! Translation
Abandoning all weapons, Thou resorted to the Mahendra mountain for meditation, practicing penance. Finding the land up to Gokarna submerged in the sea, on the request of the sages, who meditated upon Thee, Thou frightened the ocean with the bow bearing fire missile. By throwing a sacrificial ladle Thou pushed back the sea and scooped out the land of Kerala. O Bhrigupati Parashuraama! The Lord of Guruvaayur! Deign to protect me.
