ମାଂଡୂକ୍ୟ ଉପନିଷଦ୍

ମାଂଡୂକ୍ୟ ଉପନିଷଦ୍ is one of the shortest and most profound Upanishads, traditionally connected with the Atharva Veda. In only twelve mantras it teaches the identity of ଆତ୍ମା and Brahman through the analysis of ଓଂ and the four quarters of consciousness: waking, dream, deep sleep, and ତୁରୀୟ.

The text is foundational for Advaita Vedanta, especially through Gaudapada's Karika and Shankara's bhashya. Its opening declares that all this is ଓଂ, and that the Self is Brahman. It then shows that the waking experiencer, dream experiencer, and deep-sleep experiencer are not the final Self; they are understood through the fourth, which is not a state among states but the non-dual reality.

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The peace invocation prays that hearing, sight, limbs, speech, and life remain strong for the pursuit of Brahman.

॥ ଅଥ ମାଂଡୂକ୍ୟୋପନିଷତ୍ ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
This title announces the beginning of the Mandukya Upanishad.

ଓମିତ୍ୟେତଦକ୍ଷରମିଦଗଂ ସର୍ଵଂ ତସ୍ୟୋପଵ୍ୟାଖ୍ୟାନଂ
ଭୂତଂ ଭଵଦ୍ ଭଵିଷ୍ୟଦିତି ସର୍ଵମୋଂକାର ଏଵ
ୟଚ୍ଚାନ୍ୟତ୍ ତ୍ରିକାଲାତୀତଂ ତଦପ୍ୟୋଂକାର ଏଵ ॥ 1 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The Upanishad declares that Om is all this: past, present, future, and whatever is beyond time.

ସର୍ଵଗଂ ହ୍ୟେତଦ୍ ବ୍ରହ୍ମାୟମାତ୍ମା ବ୍ରହ୍ମ ସୋଽୟମାତ୍ମା ଚତୁଷ୍ପାତ୍ ॥ 2 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
It states the mahavakya: all this is Brahman, and this Self is Brahman, having four quarters.

ଜାଗରିତସ୍ଥାନୋ ବହିଷ୍ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞଃ ସପ୍ତାଂଗ ଏକୋନଵିଂଶତିମୁଖଃ
ସ୍ଥୂଲଭୁଗ୍ଵୈଶ୍ଵାନରଃ ପ୍ରଥମଃ ପାଦଃ ॥ 3 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The waking self, Vaishvanara, is outward-knowing, seven-limbed, nineteen-mouthed, and experiences gross objects.

ସ୍ଵପ୍ନସ୍ଥାନୋଽଂତଃପ୍ରଜ୍ଞଃ ସପ୍ତାଂଗ ଏକୋନଵିଂଶତିମୁଖଃ
ପ୍ରଵିଵିକ୍ତଭୁକ୍ତୈଜସୋ ଦ୍ଵିତୀୟଃ ପାଦଃ ॥ 4 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The dream self, Taijasa, is inward-knowing, seven-limbed, nineteen-mouthed, and experiences subtle objects.

ୟତ୍ର ସୁପ୍ତୋ ନ କଂଚନ କାମଂ କାମୟତେ ନ କଂଚନ ସ୍ଵପ୍ନଂ
ପଶ୍ୟତି ତତ୍ ସୁଷୁପ୍ତମ୍ । ସୁଷୁପ୍ତସ୍ଥାନ ଏକୀଭୂତଃ ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞାନଘନ
ଏଵାନଂଦମୟୋ ହ୍ୟାନଂଦଭୁକ୍ ଚେତୋମୁଖଃ ପ୍ରାଜ୍ଞସ୍ତୃତୀୟଃ ପାଦଃ ॥ 5 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Deep sleep is the state where one desires nothing and sees no dream; the experiencer there is Prajna, a mass of undifferentiated awareness and bliss.

ଏଷ ସର୍ଵେଶ୍ଵରଃ ଏଷ ସର୍ଵଜ୍ଞ ଏଷୋଽଂତର୍ୟାମ୍ୟେଷ ୟୋନିଃ ସର୍ଵସ୍ୟ
ପ୍ରଭଵାପ୍ୟୟୌ ହି ଭୂତାନାମ୍ ॥ 6 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Prajna is the Lord of all, knower of all, inner controller, source and dissolution of beings.

ନାଂତଃପ୍ରଜ୍ଞଂ ନ ବହିଷ୍ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞଂ ନୋଭୟତଃପ୍ରଜ୍ଞଂ ନ ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞାନଘନଂ
ନ ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞଂ ନାପ୍ରଜ୍ଞମ୍ । ଅଦୃଷ୍ଟମଵ୍ୟଵହାର୍ୟମଗ୍ରାହ୍ୟମଲକ୍ଷଣଂ
ଅଚିଂତ୍ୟମଵ୍ୟପଦେଶ୍ୟମେକାତ୍ମପ୍ରତ୍ୟୟସାରଂ ପ୍ରପଂଚୋପଶମଂ
ଶାଂତଂ ଶିଵମଦ୍ଵୈତଂ ଚତୁର୍ଥଂ ମନ୍ୟଂତେ ସ ଆତ୍ମା ସ ଵିଜ୍ଞେୟଃ ॥ 7 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The fourth is not inward, outward, both, unconscious, or ordinary cognition; it is unseen, ungraspable, unthinkable, indescribable, peaceful, auspicious, and non-dual.

ସୋଽୟମାତ୍ମାଧ୍ୟକ୍ଷରମୋଂକାରୋଽଧିମାତ୍ରଂ ପାଦା ମାତ୍ରା ମାତ୍ରାଶ୍ଚ ପାଦା
ଅକାର ଉକାରୋ ମକାର ଇତି ॥ 8 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The same Self is Om with respect to sound, and its quarters are the matras A, U, and M.

ଜାଗରିତସ୍ଥାନୋ ଵୈଶ୍ଵାନରୋଽକାରଃ ପ୍ରଥମା ମାତ୍ରାଽଽପ୍ତେରାଦିମତ୍ତ୍ଵାଦ୍
ଵାଽଽପ୍ନୋତି ହ ଵୈ ସର୍ଵାନ୍ କାମାନାଦିଶ୍ଚ ଭଵତି ୟ ଏଵଂ ଵେଦ ॥ 9 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
A corresponds to the waking Vaishvanara because it is first and all-pervading; one who knows this attains desired aims and becomes foremost.

ସ୍ଵପ୍ନସ୍ଥାନସ୍ତୈଜସ ଉକାରୋ ଦ୍ଵିତୀୟା ମାତ୍ରୋତ୍କର୍ଷାତ୍
ଉଭୟତ୍ଵାଦ୍ଵୋତ୍କର୍ଷତି ହ ଵୈ ଜ୍ଞାନସଂତତିଂ ସମାନଶ୍ଚ ଭଵତି
ନାସ୍ୟାବ୍ରହ୍ମଵିତ୍କୁଲେ ଭଵତି ୟ ଏଵଂ ଵେଦ ॥ 10 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
U corresponds to Taijasa because of elevation and intermediacy; one who knows this raises the stream of knowledge and becomes balanced.

ସୁଷୁପ୍ତସ୍ଥାନଃ ପ୍ରାଜ୍ଞୋ ମକାରସ୍ତୃତୀୟା ମାତ୍ରା ମିତେରପୀତେର୍ଵା
ମିନୋତି ହ ଵା ଇଦଂ ସର୍ଵମପୀତିଶ୍ଚ ଭଵତି ୟ ଏଵଂ ଵେଦ ॥ 11 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
M corresponds to Prajna because of measure and absorption; one who knows this measures all and gathers all into himself.

ଅମାତ୍ରଶ୍ଚତୁର୍ଥୋଽଵ୍ୟଵହାର୍ୟଃ ପ୍ରପଂଚୋପଶମଃ ଶିଵୋଽଦ୍ଵୈତ
ଏଵମୋଂକାର ଆତ୍ମୈଵ ସଂଵିଶତ୍ୟାତ୍ମନାଽଽତ୍ମାନଂ ୟ ଏଵଂ ଵେଦ ॥ 12 ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The soundless fourth is beyond practical dealings, the cessation of phenomena, auspicious and non-dual; Om is the Self, and the knower enters the Self by the Self.

॥ ଇତି ମାଂଡୂକ୍ୟୋପନିଷତ୍ ସମାପ୍ତା ॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The final closing completes the Upanishadic recitation.
