Prashnopanishad - Question 2 - Odia

The second question of ପ୍ରଶ୍ନୋପନିଷଦ୍ asks which powers sustain the person and which among them is supreme. Pippalada answers through a vivid teaching: the senses, mind, speech, fire, sun, and other powers all have their place, but ପ୍ରାଣ is the central life-force on which they depend.

This question belongs to the Atharva Veda's contemplative style, where physiological, cosmic, and spiritual meanings are woven together. Prana is not treated merely as breathing air; it is the organizing vitality that allows the senses, mind, and body to function. When prana prepares to depart, all other faculties weaken.

ଦ୍ଵିତୀୟଃ ପ୍ରଶ୍ନଃ

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
This title announces the second question of the Prashna Upanishad.

ଅଥ ହୈନଂ ଭାର୍ଗଵୋ ଵୈଦର୍ଭିଃ ପପ୍ରଚ୍ଛ।
ଭଗଵନ୍ କତ୍ୟେଵ ଦେଵାଃ ପ୍ରଜାଂ ଵିଧାରୟଂତେ କତର ଏତତ୍ପ୍ରକାଶୟଂତେ କଃ ପୁନରେଷାଂ ଵରିଷ୍ଠଃ ଇତି ॥1॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Bhargava asks how many deities uphold a person, which illumine the body, and which among them is supreme.

ତସ୍ମୈ ସ ହୋଵାଚାକାଶୋ ହ ଵା ଏଷ ଦେଵୋ ଵାୟୁରଗ୍ନିରାପଃ ପୃଥିଵୀ ଵାଙ୍ମନଶ୍ଚକ୍ଷୁଃ ଶ୍ରୋତ୍ରଂ ଚ।
ତେ ପ୍ରକାଶ୍ୟାଭିଵଦଂତି ଵୟମେତଦ୍ବାଣମଵଷ୍ଟଭ୍ୟ ଵିଧାରୟାମଃ ॥2॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Pippalada lists space, air, fire, water, earth, speech, mind, sight, and hearing as powers that claim to support the body.

ତାନ୍ ଵରିଷ୍ଠଃ ପ୍ରାଣ ଉଵାଚ।
ମା ମୋହମାପଦ୍ୟଥ ଅହମେଵୈତତ୍ପଂଚଧାତ୍ମାନଂ ପ୍ରଵିଭଜ୍ୟୈତଦ୍ବାଣମଵଷ୍ଟଭ୍ୟ ଵିଧାରୟାମୀତି ତେଽଶ୍ରଦ୍ଦଧାନା ବଭୂଵୁଃ ॥3॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Prana, the chief life-force, tells them not to fall into delusion, for he supports the body by dividing himself fivefold.

ସୋଽଭିମାନାଦୂର୍ଧ୍ଵମୁତ୍କ୍ରାମତ ଇଵ ତସ୍ମିନ୍ନୁତ୍କ୍ରାମତ୍ୟଥେତରେ ସର୍ଵ ଏଵୋତ୍କ୍ରାମଂତେ ତସ୍ମିଂଶ୍ଚ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠମାନେ ସର୍ଵ ଏଵ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠଂତେ।
ତଦ୍ୟଥା ମକ୍ଷିକା ମଧୁକରରାଜାନମୁତ୍କ୍ରାମଂତଂ ସର୍ଵ ଏଵୋତ୍କ୍ରାମଂତେ ତସ୍ମିଂଶ୍ଚ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠମାନେ ସର୍ଵ ଏଵ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଟଂତ ଏଵଂ ଵାଙ୍ମନଷ୍ଚକ୍ଷୁଃ ଶ୍ରୋତ୍ରଂ ଚ ତେ ପ୍ରୀତାଃ ପ୍ରାଣଂ ସ୍ତୁନ୍ଵଂତି ॥4॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The other powers do not believe him, so prana prepares to depart; as he rises, all the others rise like bees following their queen.

ଏଷୋଽଗ୍ନିସ୍ତପତ୍ୟେଷ ସୂର୍ୟ ଏଷ ପର୍ଜନ୍ୟୋ ମଘଵାନେଷ ଵାୟୁଃ।
ଏଷ ପୃଥିଵୀ ରୟିର୍ଦେଵଃ ସଦସଚ୍ଚାମୃତଂ ଚ ୟତ୍ ॥5॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Convinced, the powers praise prana as fire, sun, rain, Indra, wind, earth, matter, deity, being, and non-being.

ଅରା ଇଵ ରଥନାଭୌ ପ୍ରାଣେ ସର୍ଵଂ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠିତମ୍।
ଋଚୋ ୟଜୂଷି ସାମାନି ୟଜ୍ଞଃ କ୍ଷତ୍ରଂ ବ୍ରହ୍ମ ଚ ॥6॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
They praise prana as the hub in which the Vedas, sacrifice, priestly power, and warrior power are established.

ପ୍ରଜାପତିଶ୍ଚରସି ଗର୍ଭେ ତ୍ଵମେଵ ପ୍ରତିଜାୟସେ।
ତୁଭ୍ୟଂ ପ୍ରାଣ ପ୍ରଜାସ୍ତ୍ଵିମା ବଲିଂ ହରଂତି ୟଃ ପ୍ରାଣୈଃ ପ୍ରତିତିଷ୍ଠସି ॥7॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Prana is praised as Prajapati moving in the womb, born as beings, and receiving offerings through the senses.

ଦେଵାନାମସି ଵହ୍ନିତମଃ ପିତୃଣାଂ ପ୍ରଥମା ସ୍ଵଧା।
ଋଷୀଣାଂ ଚରିତଂ ସତ୍ୟମଥର୍ଵାଂଗିରସାମସି ॥8॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Prana is called the carrier of offerings to gods and ancestors and the truth of the seers.

ଇଂଦ୍ରସ୍ତ୍ଵଂ ପ୍ରାଣ ତେଜସା ରୁଦ୍ରୋଽସି ପରିରକ୍ଷିତା।
ତ୍ଵମଂତରିକ୍ଷେ ଚରସି ସୂର୍ୟସ୍ତ୍ଵଂ ଜ୍ୟୋତିଷାଂ ପତିଃ ॥9॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Prana is identified with Indra, Rudra, protector, sun, and lord of light.

ୟଦା ତ୍ଵମଭିଵର୍ଷସ୍ୟଥେମାଃ ପ୍ରାଣ ତେ ପ୍ରଜାଃ।
ଆନଂଦରୂପାସ୍ତିଷ୍ଠଂତି କାମାୟାନ୍ନଂ ଭଵିଷ୍ୟତୀତି ॥10॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
When prana rains, beings rejoice, knowing food will be abundant.

ଵ୍ରାତ୍ୟସ୍ତ୍ଵଂ ପ୍ରାଣୈକର୍ଷରତ୍ତା ଵିଶ୍ଵସ୍ୟ ସତ୍ପତିଃ।
ଵୟମାଦ୍ୟସ୍ୟ ଦାତାରଃ ପିତା ତ୍ଵଂ ମାତରିଶ୍ଵ ନଃ ॥11॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
Prana is praised as pure, eater, lord of what exists, and father, to whom offerings are made.

ୟା ତେ ତନୂର୍ଵାଚି ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠିତା ୟା ଶ୍ରୋତ୍ରେ ୟା ଚ ଚକ୍ଷୁଷି।
ୟା ଚ ମନସି ସଂତତା ଶିଵାଂ ତାଂ କୁରୂ ମୋତ୍କ୍ରମୀଃ ॥12॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
The prayer asks prana to make speech, hearing, sight, and mind auspicious and not to depart from the body.

ପ୍ରାଣସ୍ୟେଦଂ ଵଶେ ସର୍ଵଂ ତ୍ରିଦିଵେ ୟତ୍ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠିତମ୍।
ମାତେଵ ପୁତ୍ରାନ୍ ରକ୍ଷସ୍ଵ ଶ୍ରୀଶ୍ଚ ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞାଂ ଚ ଵିଧେହି ନ ଇତି ॥13॥

Translation (ଭାଵାର୍ଥ):
All beings in the three worlds are under prana's control, so the seekers ask him to protect them like a mother and grant prosperity and wisdom.
