அத்ரே: புத்ரதயா புரா த்வமனஸூயாயாம் ஹி த³த்தாபி⁴தோ⁴
ஜாத: ஶிஷ்யனிப³ந்த⁴தந்த்³ரிதமனா: ஸ்வஸ்த²ஶ்சரன் காந்தயா ।
த்³ருஷ்டோ ப⁴க்ததமேன ஹேஹயமஹீபாலேன தஸ்மை வரா-
நஷ்டைஶ்வர்யமுகா²ன் ப்ரதா³ய த³தி³த² ஸ்வேனைவ சாந்தே வத⁴ம் ॥1॥
Meaning
அத்ரே: புத்ரதயா - as the son of the sage Atri; புரா த்வம்- - long ago, Thou; அனஸூயாயாம் ஹி - to Anasooyaa indeed; த³த்த-அபி⁴த:⁴ ஜாத: - as Dattatreya was born; ஶிஷ்ய-னிப³ந்த⁴ - by Thy disciples' pesterings; தந்த்³ரித-மனா: - mentally tired; ஸ்வஸ்த:²-சரன் காந்தயா - (Thou) peacefully moved about with Thy wife; த்³ருஷ்ட: ப⁴க்ததமேன - seen by the great devotee,; ஹேஹய-மஹீபாலேன தஸ்மை - the king of Hehayaa, (Kaartaviryaarjuna), to him; வரான்-அஷ்ட-ஐஶ்வர்ய-முகா²ன் - the boons of the eight Sidhis; ப்ரதா³ய த³தி³த² - giving, also gave; ஸ்வேன-ஏவ - by thyself alone; ச-அந்தே வத⁴ம் - in the end, death;
Translation
Long ago Thou were born as Dattatreya to the sage Atri and Anasooyaa. Mentally tired by the pesterings of Thy various disciples, Thou wandered about with Thy wife immersed in blissful peace. Thus Thou were seen by the great devotee Kaartaviryaarjuna, the king of Hehaya. Pleased, Thou bestowed on him all psychic powers consisting of the eight Sidhis and also promised him death at Thy hands in the end.

Meaning
ஸத்யம் கர்தும்- - to fulfill; அத-²அர்ஜுனஸ்ய ச வரம் - and then the boon given to Kaartviryaarjuna; தத்-ஶக்தி-மாத்ரா-னதம் - (who were) just a little bit subdued by his valour alone; ப்³ரஹ்னத்³வேஷி தத்-அகி²லம் - who were impious, that whole; ந்ருபகுலம் ஹந்தும் - the clan of kings to kill; ச பூ⁴மே:-ப⁴ரம் - and (who were) burden to the earth; ஸஞ்ஜாத: ஜமத³க்³னித: - (Thou) were born of Jamadagni; ப்⁴ருகு³குலே - in the line of Bhrigus; த்வம் ரேணுகாயாம் - Thou to Renuka; ஹரே - O Lord!; ராம: நாம - by the name Raama; தத்-ஆத்மஜேஷு - among his (Jamadgni,s) sons; அவரஜ: - as the youngest; பித்ரோ:-அதா⁴: ஸம்மத³ம் - to the parents gave great joy;
Translation
To fulfill the boon given to Kaartaviryaarjuna, Thou were born to Jamadagni and Renuka in the line of the Bhrigus, by the name Raama. Thou were the youngest among Jamadagni's sons and gave Thy parents great joy. Thy purpose to be born as Raama was also to kill the whole clan of kings who were very impious and were a burden on the earth, and were partly held in check only by Kaartaviryarjuna's valour.

Meaning
லப்³த-⁴ஆம்னாயக³ண:- - gaining (the knowledge of) all the Vedas; சதுர்த³ஶ-வயா - by the age of fourteen; க³ந்த⁴ர்வராஜே - in Gandharva king (Chitraratha); மனாக்-ஆஸக்தாம் கில - a little bit attached, indeed; மாதரம் ப்ரதி - Thy mother, towards her; பிது: க்ரோத-⁴ஆகுலஸ்ய-ஆஜ்ஞயா - by Thy greatly enraged father's command; தாத-ஆஜ்ஞாதிக-³ஸோத³ரை: - who did not carry out the father,s command, Thy brothers; ஸமம்-இமாம் சி²த்வா- - along with them, her cutting off; அத² ஶாந்தாத் பிது: - then, who had calmed down, Thy father, from him; தேஷாம் ஜீவன யோக³ம்-ஆபித² வரம் - their life, to be restored requested the boon; மாதா ச - and Thy mother also; தே-அதா³த்-வரான் - gave Thee boons;
Translation
By the age of fourteen years Thou acquired the knowledge of the Vedas. Thy father was greatly enraged with Thy mother who was a little bit attached to the Gandharva king Chitraratha. By the command of Thy father Thou cut of Thy mother's head and also of Thy brothers' as they had failed to carry out the same order of Thy father. After Thy father had calmed down, as a boon from him, Thou got to restore them to life. Thy mother also being pleased gave Thee boons.

Meaning
பித்ரா மாத்ருமுதே³ - by Thy father, for Thy mother's pleasure; ஸ்தவ-ஆஹ்ருத- - by prayer was brought; வியத்-தே⁴னோ:- - the heavenly cow (Kaamdhenu); நிஜாத்-ஆஶ்ரமாத் - from Thy aashrama; ப்ரஸ்தா²ய-அத² - setting out then,; ப்⁴ருகோ³:-கி³ரா - on Bhrigu's words; ஹிமகி³ரௌ-ஆராத்⁴ய கௌ³ரீபதிம் - in the Himaalayaas, worshipping Shiva; லப்³த்⁴வா-தத்-பரஶும் - got his battle axe; தத்-உக்த-த³னுஜ-சே²தீ³ - by him pointed out, that asura (Thou) killed; மஹா-அஸ்த்ராதி³கம் ப்ராப்த: - various divine missiles having got; மித்ரம்-அத-² - as a friend; அக்ருத்-வ்ரண-முனிம் - Akrit-vrana sage; ப்ராப்ய-அக³ம: ஸ்வ-ஆஶ்ரமம் - getting, went to Thy aashrama;
Translation
To please Thy mother Renuka, Thy father Jamadagni, brought by prayer the heavenly cow Kaamdhenu to his aashrama. On the advice of Bhrigu, Thou set out from Thy aashrama to the Himaalayaa and worshipped Shiva. Thou were bestowed with his battle-axe and other various divine missiles, and killed the asura pointed out by him.Then making friends with sage Akritvrana, Thou returned to Thy aashrama.

ஆகே²டோபக³தோர்ஜுன: ஸுரக³வீஸம்ப்ராப்தஸம்பத்³க³ணை-
ஸ்த்வத்பித்ரா பரிபூஜித: புரக³தோ து³ர்மந்த்ரிவாசா புன: ।
கா³ம் க்ரேதும் ஸசிவம் ந்யயுனக்த குதி⁴யா தேனாபி ருந்த⁴ன்முனி-
ப்ராணக்ஷேபஸரோஷகோ³ஹதசமூசக்ரேண வத்ஸோ ஹ்ருத: ॥5॥
Meaning
ஆகே²ட-உபக³த:-அர்ஜுன: - for hunting who had come, Kaartaveeryaarjuna,; ஸுரக³வீ-ஸம்ப்ராப்த-ஸம்பத்³க³ணை:- - by the celestial cow getting the various riches; த்வத்-பித்ரா பரிபூஜித: - by Thy father well entertained; புர-க³த: து³ர்மந்த்ரி-வாசா - returned to his town, by the ill advice; புன: கா³ம் க்ரேதும் - again, the cow to buy; ஸசிவம் ந்யயுனக்த - appointed his minister; குதி⁴யா தேன- - by the evil minded him; அபி ருந்த⁴ன்- - even as he was obstructing; முனி-ப்ராண-க்ஷேப - the sage was killed; ஸரோஷ-கோ³- - the enraged cow; ஹத-சமூ-சக்ரேண - killed (by the soldiers emerging from her) the whole army; வத்ஸ: ஹ்ருத: - (but) the calf was stolen;
Translation
The king Kiraatarjuna came hunting to the forest and was treated well by Thy father with the riches and luxuries obtained from the celestial cow Kaamadhenu. When the king returned to his town, he was ill advised by his ministers to buy the cow. The king sent an emissary for the purpose and as Thy father, the sage tried to resist his taking away of the cow, he was killed. Several warriors emerged from the furious divine cow and destroyed the whole army. But the calf was stolen.

ஶுக்ர-உஜ்ஜீவித - by Shukra (who was) brought back to life; தாத-வாக்ய - by Thy father's words; சலித-க்ரோத:⁴-அத² - Thou whose anger increased,then; ஸக்²யா ஸமம் விப்⁴ரத் - with Thy friends shining; த்⁴யாத-மஹோத³ர-உபனிஹிதம் - meditated upon Mahodara, (from him) brought; சாபம் குடா²ரம் ஶரான் - bow, battle-axe and arrows; ஆரூட:⁴ ஸஹ-வாஹ-யந்த்ருக ரத²ம் - boarding, with horses and the charioteer the chariot; மாஹிஷ்மதீம்-ஆவிஶன் - Maahishmati entering; வாக்³பி⁴:-வத்ஸம்- - by words, the calf; அதா³ஶுஷி க்ஷிதிபதௌ - did not give back, when the king; ஸம்ப்ராஸ்துதா²: ஸனஅரம் - started the battle;
Translation
Thy father was brought back to life by Shukraachaarya. When Thy father related the whole incident Thou were very angry. With Thy friend Akritavrana Thou meditated upon Mahodara who then equipped Thee with bow, arrows and the battle axe. Boarding the chariot with the horses and the charioteer, Thou entered Maahishmati. Even when the king was requested, he did not give the calf back, Thou started the battle.

புத்ராணாம்-அயுதேன - with sons ten thousand sons; ஸப்தத³ஶபி⁴:-ச-அக்ஷௌஹிணீபி⁴:- - and seventeen Akshauhini (armies); மஹா-ஸேனானீபி⁴:- - great commanders; அனேக-மித்ர-னிவஹை:- - and numerous friends; வ்யாஜ்ரும்பி⁴த-ஆயோத⁴ன: - fiercely fighting the battle; ஸத்³ய:-த்வத்க- - soon by Thy; குடா²ர-பா³ண-வித³லன்- - battle-axe and arrows destroying; நிஶ்ஶேஷ-ஸைன்ய-உத்கர: - (whose) entire army; பீ⁴தி-ப்ரத்³ருத- - of fear who had fled; நஷ்ட-ஶிஷ்ட-தனய: - and so were saved from being killed, with these left over sons; த்வாம்-ஆபதத் - Thee attacked; ஹேஹய: - the king of Hehaya, i.e., Kartaveeryaarjuna;
Translation
Kaartveerya with his ten thousand sons and seventeen Akshauhini armies and numerous friends and great commanders fiercely fought the battle. Soon by Thy battle axe and arrows the entire army was destroyed and all his sons were killed except those who had fled in fright. The king of Hehaya then attacked Thee.

Meaning
லீலா-வாரித - cleverly impounded; நர்மதா³ ஜல - the river Narmadaa's waters; வலத் - almost drowning (by releasing the waters suddenly); லனகேஶ-க³ர்வ-அபஹ- - Raavana, and his pride destroying; ஶ்ரீமத்- - O! Thyself; பா³ஹு-ஸஹஸ்ர-முக்த - by his thousand arms who wielded; ப³ஹு-ஶஸ்த்ர-அஸ்த்ரம் - innumerable weapons; நிருந்த⁴ன்-அமும் - blocking him ((Kaartveeryaarjuna); சக்ரே த்வயி-அத² - the discus used on Thee, then; வைஷ்ணவே-அபி விப²லே - even the Vaishnava (discus) was powerless; பு³த்³த்⁴வா ஹரிம் த்வாம் - knowing Thee as Hari; முதா³ த்⁴யாயந்தம் - with joy, meditating; சி²த-ஸர்வ-தோ³ஷம்- - (he whose) all sins were purified; அவதீ⁴: ஸ:-அகா³த் - Thou killed, and he went; பரம் தே பத³ம் - to Thy Supreme abode;
Translation
Kaartaveerya had once with his thousand arms cleverly impounded the waters of the river Narmadaa, and almost drowning Raavana had destroyed his pride who was meditating on the banks downstream. That Kaartaveerya, wielded various weapons with those thousand arms and finding the Vaishnava discus also powerless against Thee, knew Thee to be Hari, and with joy meditated upon Thee. Then, he whose sins were purified, was killed by Thee and he went to Thy Supreme abode.

பூ⁴ய:-அமர்ஷித- - thereafter greatly angered; ஹேஹய-ஆத்மஜ-க³ணை:- - by the king of Hehaya's sons; தாதே ஹதே - (when) Thy father was killed; ரேணுகாம்-ஆக்⁴னானாம் ஹ்ருத³யம் - Renuka was beating her breast; நிரீக்ஷ்ய ப³ஹுஶ: - seeing many times; கோ⁴ராம் ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாம் வஹன் - taking a terrible vow; த்⁴யான-ஆனீத- - by meditation brought; ரத-²ஆயுத:⁴-த்வம்-அக்ருதா² - chariot and weapons Thou made; விப்ர-த்³ருஹ: க்ஷத்ரியான் - the enemies of Brahmins, the Kshatriyas; தி³க்-சக்ரேஷு குடா²ரயன் - in all the quarters fighting with battle axe; விஶிக²யன் நி:க்ஷத்ரியாம் - rendering devoid of Kshatriyaas; மேதி³னீம் - the earth;
Translation
Thereafter the sons of the king of Hehaya were in great rage and killed Thy father. Grieved at this Thy mother Renuka was wailing and beating her breast many times, seeing this Thou took a terrible vow. Thou then got the chariot and weapon by meditation and fought against the Kshatriyaas who were enemies of the Brahmins. With the battle axe Thou killed the Kshatriyaas in all the quarters and rendered the earth devoid of them.

Meaning
தாத-உஜ்ஜீவனக்ருத்- - Thy father reviving; ந்ருபாலக-குலம் - the tribe of Kshatriyaas; த்ரி:-ஸப்த-க்ருத்வ: ஜயன் - thrice seven times (21) defeating; ஸந்தர்ப்ய-அத² - performing tarpana then; ஸமந்த-பஞ்சக-மஹாரக்த-ஹ்ருதௌ³கே⁴ - in Samant-Panchaka, the vast lake of blood,; பித்ருன் யஜ்ஞே - to the ancestors , in sacrifice; க்ஷ்மாம்-அபி காஶ்யப-ஆதி³ஷு - the land also, to Kaashyapa and other Rishis; தி³ஶன் ஸால்வேன யுத்⁴யன் புன: - giving away, with Saalva fighting again; க்ருஷ்ண:-அமும்-னிஹனிஷ்யதி- - Krishna will kill him; இதி ஶமித: யுத்³தா⁴த் - thus restrained from the fight; குமாரை: ப⁴வான் - by the Sanat kumaaras, Thou (were);
Translation
Thy father was revived and Thou defeated the clan of kings twenty one times. Thou then performed tarpana to the ancestors in the vast lake of blood named Samant Panchaka. In the sacrifice Thou also gave away land to Kaashyapa and other Rishis. Thou fighting again with Saalva, refrained, on being restrained by Sanata Kumaars who told Thee that he was destined to be killed by Krishna.

ந்யஸ்ய-அஸ்த்ராணி - abandoning all weapons; மஹேந்த்³ர-பூ⁴ப்⁴ருதி - on the Mahendra mountain; தப:-தன்வன் - penance performing; புன:-மஜ்ஜிதாம் - thereafter submerged; கோ³கர்ண-அவதி⁴ - up to Gokarna; ஸாக³ரேண த⁴ரணீம் த்³ருஷ்ட்வா- - by the sea, the earth seeing; அர்தி²த:-தாபஸை: த்⁴யாத- - requested by the sages by meditation; இஷ்வாஸ-த்⁴ருத-அனல-அஸ்த்ர- - the bow bearing the fire missile; சகிதம் ஸிந்து⁴ம் - the frightened ocean; ஸ்ருவ-க்ஷேபணாத்- - by the throwing of the ladle; உத்ஸார்ய-உத்³த்⁴ருத-கேரல: - pushing back, scooped out Kerala; ப்⁴ருகு³பதே வாதேஶ - O! Bhrigupati (Parashuraama), the Lord of Guruvaayur!; ஸம்ரக்ஷ மாம் - protect me;
Translation
Abandoning all weapons, Thou resorted to the Mahendra mountain for meditation, practicing penance. Finding the land up to Gokarna submerged in the sea, on the request of the sages, who meditated upon Thee, Thou frightened the ocean with the bow bearing fire missile. By throwing a sacrificial ladle Thou pushed back the sea and scooped out the land of Kerala. O Bhrigupati Parashuraama! The Lord of Guruvaayur! Deign to protect me.
