கதா³சன வ்ரஜஶிஶுபி⁴: ஸமம் ப⁴வான்
வனாஶனே விஹிதமதி: ப்ரகே³தராம் ।
ஸமாவ்ருதோ ப³ஹுதரவத்ஸமண்ட³லை:
ஸதேமனைர்னிரக³மதீ³ஶ ஜேமனை: ॥1॥
Meaning
கதா³சன - once; வ்ரஜஶிஶுபி⁴: ஸமம் - along with the children of Gokul; ப⁴வான் வன-அஶனே - Thou, eating in the woods (picnic); விஹித-மதி: - making up the mind; ப்ரகே³தராம் ஸமாவ்ருத: - early in the morning surrounded by; ப³ஹுதர-வத்ஸ-மண்ட³லை: - many herds of calves; ஸதேமனை:-னிரக³மத்- - with eatables set out; ஈஶ ஜேமனை: - O Lord! (also taking along) cooked rice;
Translation
Once Thou decided to have a picnic in the woods. Along with the children of Gokul and surrounded by a large herd of calves, Thou set out early in the morning. O Lord Thou also took along eatables, cooked rice and other delicacies.
ஶ்லோக:
வினிர்யதஸ்தவ சரணாம்பு³ஜத்³வயா-
து³த³ஞ்சிதம் த்ரிபு⁴வனபாவனம் ரஜ: ।
மஹர்ஷய: புலகத⁴ரை: கலேப³ரை-
ருதூ³ஹிரே த்⁴ருதப⁴வதீ³க்ஷணோத்ஸவா: ॥2॥
Meaning
வினிர்யத: தவ - Thy having set out; சரண-அம்பு³ஜ-த்³வயாத்- - from Thy two lotus like feet; உத³ஞ்சிதம் - risen up; த்ரிபு⁴வன-பாவனம் ரஜ: - (that which) sanctifies the three worlds, dust; மஹர்ஷய: புலகத⁴ரை: - the great sages with horripilation; கலேப³ரை:-உதூ³ஹிரே - on their bodies received; த்⁴ருத-ப⁴வத்-ஈக்ஷண- - holding Thy sight; உத்ஸவா: - as celebration;
Translation
When Thou set out for the woods, from Thy lotus like two feet the dust arose which sanctifies the three worlds. The great sages received that dust on their bodies with great joy and horripilation as they feasted their eyes on Thy sight.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரசாரயத்யவிரலஶாத்³வலே தலே
பஶூன் விபோ⁴ ப⁴வதி ஸமம் குமாரகை: ।
அகா⁴ஸுரோ ந்யருணத³கா⁴ய வர்தனீ
ப⁴யானக: ஸபதி³ ஶயானகாக்ருதி: ॥3॥
Meaning
ப்ரசாரயதி- - grazing; அவிரல-ஶாத்³வலே தலே - on the thick grass land; பஶூன் விபோ⁴ - the cattle, O Lord!; ப⁴வதி ஸமம் குமாரகை: - Thee with the lads; அகா⁴ஸுர: ந்யருணத்- - Aghaasura blocked; அகா⁴ய வர்தனீ - for an evil deed the path; ப⁴யானக: ஸபதி³ - most terrifying, suddenly; ஶயானக-ஆக்ருதி: - in a python form;
Translation
Thou and the lads were grazing the cattle on the thick grass lands. Suddenly the most terrifying demon Aghaasura, in the form of a formidable python, with an evil intention blocked the way.
ஶ்லோக:
மஹாசலப்ரதிமதனோர்கு³ஹானிப-⁴
ப்ரஸாரிதப்ரதி²தமுக²ஸ்ய கானநே ।
முகோ²த³ரம் விஹரணகௌதுகாத்³க³தா:
குமாரகா: கிமபி விதூ³ரகே³ த்வயி ॥4॥
Meaning
மஹாசல-ப்ரதிம-தனோ:- - with a mountain like body; கு³ஹா-னிப-⁴ப்ரஸாரித- - cave like spread out; ப்ரதி²த-முக²ஸ்ய - extended mouth; கானநே - in the forest; முக-²உத³ரம் - in the mouth cavity; விஹரண-கௌதுகாத்- - to explore in eagerness; க³தா: குமாரகா: - entered the lads; கிம்-அபி - (when) somewhat; விதூ³ரகே³ த்வயி - ahead had gone, Thee;
Translation
Thou had gone a little ahead. The lads mistook the huge body of the Asura for a mountain and its large spread out mouth for a cave. In their eagerness to explore the woods, they entered the python's open mouth.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரமாத³த: ப்ரவிஶதி பன்னகோ³த³ரம்
க்வத²த்தனௌ பஶுபகுலே ஸவாத்ஸகே ।
வித³ன்னித³ம் த்வமபி விவேஶித² ப்ரபோ⁴
ஸுஹ்ருஜ்ஜனம் விஶரணமாஶு ரக்ஷிதும் ॥5॥
Meaning
ப்ரமாத³த: ப்ரவிஶதி - by mistake, had entered; பன்னக-³உத³ரம் - the snake's belly; க்வத²த்-தனௌ - (they) felt heat on their bodies; பஶுபகுலே ஸவாத்ஸகே - the Gopa boys along with the calves; வித³ன்-இத³ம் த்வம்-அபி - knowing this, Thou also; விவேஶித² ப்ரபோ⁴ - entered O Lord!; ஸுஹ்ருத்-ஜனம் - the friend folk; விஶரணம்- - who were helpless; ஆஶு ரக்ஷிதும் - immediately to save;
Translation
The Gopa boys along with the calves had entered the belly of the snake by mistake and started to feel the heat therein. O Lord! Apprehending the situation, Thou also entered immediately to save the helpless friends.
ஶ்லோக:
க³லோத³ரே விபுலிதவர்ஷ்மணா த்வயா
மஹோரகே³ லுட²தி நிருத்³த⁴மாருதே ।
த்³ருதம் ப⁴வான் வித³லிதகண்ட²மண்ட³லோ
விமோசயன் பஶுபபஶூன் வினிர்யயௌ ॥6॥
Meaning
க³ல-உத³ரே - in the throat's cavity; விபுலித-வர்ஷ்மணா - with (Thy) increased body; த்வயா - by Thee; மஹோரகே³ லுட²தி - (when) the python was wreathing; நிருத்³த-⁴மாருதே - because of the obstruction of the breath; த்³ருதம் ப⁴வான் - quickly Thou; வித³லித-கண்ட-²மண்ட³ல: - tearing asunder the neck portion; விமோசயன் பஶுப-பஶூன் - released the Gopa boys and the calves; வினிர்யயௌ - and came out;
Translation
In the cavity of the throat of the python, Thou increased Thy size of Thy body, thus obstructing its breath. It began to wreath in agony, then Thou tore open its neck portion and releasing the Gopa boys and the calves, Thou also came out.

க்ஷணம் தி³வி த்வது³பக³மார்த²மாஸ்தி²தம்
மஹாஸுரப்ரப⁴வமஹோ மஹோ மஹத் ।
வினிர்க³தே த்வயி து நிலீனமஞ்ஜஸா
நப:⁴ஸ்த²லே நன்ருதுரதோ² ஜகு³: ஸுரா: ॥7॥
Meaning
க்ஷணம் தி³வி - for an instant, in the sky; த்வத்-உபக³ம-அர்த²ம்-ஆஸ்தி²தம் - Thy emergence awaiting; மஹா-அஸுர-ப்ரப⁴வம்- - from the great Asura emerging; அஹோ மஹ: மஹத் - Oh! A brilliance great; வினிர்க³தே த்வயி து - came out as Thou; நிலீனம்-அஞ்ஜஸா - merged immediately (into Thee only); நப:⁴-ஸ்த²லே - in the skies; நன்ருது:-அத:² - danced and then; ஜகு³: ஸுரா: - sang the gods;
Translation
A great brilliance emerged from the Asura and rose, in the sky and awaited Thy emerging from the body of the python. Oh! What a wonder, as soon as Thou came out the brilliance merged into Thee, while the gods danced and sang.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸவிஸ்மயை: கமலப⁴வாதி³பி⁴: ஸுரை-
ரனுத்³ருதஸ்தத³னு க³த: குமாரகை: ।
தி³னே புனஸ்தருணத³ஶாமுபேயுஷி
ஸ்வகைர்ப⁴வானதனுத போ⁴ஜனோத்ஸவம் ॥8॥
Meaning
ஸவிஸ்மயை: - wonderstruck; கமலப⁴வ-ஆதி³பி⁴: - Brahamaa and other; ஸுரை:-அனுத்³ருத: - gods (watching and) following (Thee); தத³னு க³த: - after that (Thou) went; குமாரகை: தி³னே புன:- - with the Gopa boys (when) the day again; தருண-த³ஶாம்-உபேயுஷி - youthful state attained (it became noon); ஸ்வகை: ப⁴வான்- - with (Thy) own people Thou; அதனுத போ⁴ஜன-உத்ஸவம் - carried out the food celebration (picnic lunch);
Translation
Brahmaa and other gods were wonderstruck and watched Thee and followed Thee in the skies. After that Thou went with the Gopa boys when the day had reached noontime and with Thy own people Thou celebrated the food festival, the picnic lunch.

விஷாணிகாமபி முரலீம் நிதம்ப³கே
நிவேஶயன் கப³லத⁴ர: கராம்பு³ஜே ।
ப்ரஹாஸயன் கலவசனை: குமாரகான்
பு³போ⁴ஜித² த்ரித³ஶக³ணைர்முதா³ நுத: ॥9॥
Meaning
விஷாணிகாம்-அபி - the horn and also; முரலீம் நிதம்ப³கே - the flute, in the waist band; நிவேஶயன் - tucking; கப³லத⁴ர: கராம்பு³ஜே - a ball of rice holding in the lotus like hand; ப்ரஹாஸயன் - making (them) laugh; கலவசனை: - by humorous talks; குமாரகான் பு³போ⁴ஜித² - the boys, (Thou) ate; த்ரித³ஶக³ணை: - by the gods; முதா³ நுத: - joyfully praised;
Translation
The horn and the flute were tucked in Thy waist band. Thou were holding a ball of rice in Thy lotus like hand and provoked peals of laughter among the boys by Thy humorous talks. As Thou took Thy meal the gods joyfully sang Thy praises.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸுகா²ஶனம் த்விஹ தவ கோ³பமண்ட³லே
மகா²ஶனாத் ப்ரியமிவ தே³வமண்ட³லே ।
இதி ஸ்துதஸ்த்ரித³ஶவரைர்ஜக³த்பதே
மருத்புரீனிலய க³தா³த் ப்ரபாஹி மாம் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஸுக-²அஶனம் து -இஹ - the happy meal indeed here; தவ கோ³ப-மண்ட³லே - to Thee amidst the Gopas; மக-²அஶனாத் - than the offerings of the sacrifices; ப்ரியம்-இவ - is more pleasing; தே³வ-மண்ட³லே - amidst the gods; இதி ஸ்துத:-த்ரித³ஶவரை:- - thus praised by the great gods; ஜக³த்பதே - O Lord of the universe!; மருத்புரீனிலய - residing in Guruvaayur; க³தா³த் ப்ரபாஹி மாம் - from ailments save me;
Translation
O Lord of the Universe! The great gods praised Thee saying that the meal taken happily with the Gopa boys gave Thee more pleasure than the sacrificial offerings which Thou had received with the gods. O Thou Residing in Guruvaayur! Save me from my ailments.
