குசேலனாமா ப⁴வத: ஸதீர்த்²யதாம் க³த: ஸ ஸாந்தீ³பனிமந்தி³ரே த்³விஜ: ।
த்வதே³கராகே³ண த⁴னாதி³னிஸ்ஸ்ப்ருஹோ தி³னானி நின்யே ப்ரஶமீ க்³ருஹாஶ்ரமீ ॥1॥
Meaning
குசேல-னாமா - Kuchela named; ப⁴வத: ஸதீர்த்²யதாம் - with Thee (who was) a fellow disciple; க³த: ஸ - went to, he; ஸாந்தி³பனி-மந்தி³ரே - at sage Saandipani's hermitage; த்³விஜ: - that Braahmana; த்வத்-ஏக-ராகே³ண - with Thee steadily devoted; த⁴ன-ஆதி³-னிஸ்ஸ்ப்ருஹ: - in wealth etc., desireless; தி³னானி நின்யே - days spent; ப்ரஶமீ க்³ருஹாஶ்ரமீ - (as a) calm minded householder;
Translation
The Brahmin by the name Kuchela (Sudaamaa) was Thy fellow disciple in the hermitage of sage Saandipini. He was totally devoted to Thee. A house holder with a controlled mind and senses, he spent his days calmly without any worldly desires of wealth etc.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸமானஶீலாபி ததீ³யவல்லபா⁴ ததை²வ நோ சித்தஜயம் ஸமேயுஷீ ।
கதா³சிதூ³சே ப³த வ்ருத்திலப்³த⁴யே ரமாபதி: கிம் ந ஸகா² நிஷேவ்யதே ॥2॥
Meaning
ஸமான-ஶீலா-அபி - (being) of same nature even; ததீ³ய-வல்லபா⁴ - his wife; ததா²-ஏவ நோ - in the same manner did not; சித்த-ஜயம் ஸமேயுஷீ - mind control achieve; கதா³சித்-ஊசே பத³ - once said O!; வ்ருத்தி-லப்³த⁴யே - a livelihood to get; ரமாபதி: - the Consort of Laxmi; கிம் ந ஸகா² - why do not your friend; நிஷேவ்யதே - approach;
Translation
His wife who equalled him in nature , had not achieved the same level of desirelessness as him. Once she asked him why should he not approach his friend Krishna, the Consort of Laxmi, for getting some means of livelihood.
ஶ்லோக:
இதீரிதோயம் ப்ரியயா க்ஷுதா⁴ர்தயா ஜுகு³ப்ஸமானோபி த⁴னே மதா³வஹே ।
ததா³ த்வதா³லோகனகௌதுகாத்³யயௌ வஹன் படாந்தே ப்ருது²கானுபாயனம் ॥3॥
Meaning
இதி-ஈரிதம்-அயம் - thus told he; ப்ரியயா க்ஷுதா⁴ர்தயா - by (his wife) troubled by hunger; ஜுகு³ப்ஸமான:-அபி - with revulsion even; த⁴னே மத-³ஆவஹே - in wealth due to its arrogance bearing; ததா³ த்வத்-ஆலோகன- - then, Thee to meet; கௌதுகாத்-யயௌ - eagerness (he) went; வஹன் பட-அந்தே - carrying in one corner of his cloth; ப்ருது²கான்-உபாயனம் - beaten rice as offering;
Translation
Kuchela set off for Thy place more out of eagerness to meet Thee than for acquiring a means of livelihood, as prodded by his wife, troubled by hunger. He had a repulsiveness towards wealth because of its proneness to generate pride and arrogance. He carried in a corner of his cloth some beaten rice as an offering to Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
க³தோயமாஶ்சர்யமயீம் ப⁴வத்புரீம் க்³ருஹேஷு ஶைப்³யாப⁴வனம் ஸமேயிவான் ।
ப்ரவிஶ்ய வைகுண்ட²மிவாப நிர்வ்ருதிம் தவாதிஸம்பா⁴வனயா து கிம் புன: ॥4॥
Meaning
க³த:-அயம்- - reaching he; ஆஶ்ச்ர்யமயீம் - wondrous; ப⁴வத்-புரீம் - Thy city; க்³ருஹேஷு ஶைப்³யா-ப⁴வன - among the houses, Mitravrinda's house; ஸமேயிவான் - entered; ப்ரவிஶ்ய - entering; வைகுண்ட²ம்-இவ- - Vaikuntha only; ஆப நிவ்ருதிம் - attained supreme peace; தவ-அதி-ஸம்பா⁴வனயா - by Thy lavish hospitality; து கிம் புன: - indeed what else more;
Translation
Kuchela reached Thy wonderful city and among the many houses, entered the house of Mitravrindaa. As he did so he attained supreme peace as though he had entered Vaikuntha only, more so by Thy lavishing hospitality beyond description.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ரபூஜிதம் தம் ப்ரியயா ச வீஜிதம் கரே க்³ருஹீத்வாகத²ய: புராக்ருதம் ।
யதி³ந்த⁴னார்த²ம் கு³ருதா³ரசோதி³தைரபர்துவர்ஷ தத³மர்ஷி கானநே ॥5॥
Meaning
ப்ரபூஜிதம் தம் - well honoured (by Thee) he; ப்ரியயா ச வீஜிதம் - and by Thy consort fanned; கரே க்³ருஹீத்வா- - by hand taking; அகத²ய: - (Thou) narrated; புராக்ருதம் - the incidents; யத்-இந்த⁴ன-அர்த²ம் - like (when) for fire wood; கு³ரு-தா³ர-சோதி³தை:- - on the teacher's wife's behest; அபர்து-வர்ஷம் - in an unseasonal rain; தத்-அமர்ஷி கானநே - which was borne in the forest;
Translation
After a cordial reception by Thee as he was fanned by Thy consort, Thou held his hands and recalled the old incidents. Like when at the behest of the teacher's wife, Thou went together to gather fire wood and were caught in an unseasonal rain in the forest.
ஶ்லோக:
த்ரபாஜுஷோஸ்மாத் ப்ருது²கம் ப³லாத³த² ப்ரக்³ருஹ்ய முஷ்டௌ ஸக்ருதா³ஶிதே த்வயா ।
க்ருதம் க்ருதம் நன்வியதேதி ஸம்ப்⁴ரமாத்³ரமா கிலோபேத்ய கரம் ருரோத⁴ தே ॥6॥
Meaning
த்ரபாஜுஷ:-அஸ்மாத் - who was feeling shy, from him; ப்ருது²கம் ப³லாத்-அத² - the flattened rice forcefully, then; ப்ரக்³ருஹ்ய - snatching; முஷ்டௌ ஸக்ருத்- - a fistful once; ஆஶிதே த்வயா - being eaten by Thee; க்ருதம் க்ருதம் - enough enough; நனு-இயத-இதி - indeed this much thus; ஸம்ப்⁴ரமாத்-ரமா - in consternation, Ramaa; கில-உபேத்ய - indeed approached; கரம் ருரோத⁴ தே - and hand held back Thy;
Translation
Kuchela was feeling very shy and so Thou forcefully snatched the flattened rice from him and ate a fistful. Just then in great consternation Ramaa approached Thee and held back Thy hand saying that that much was indeed enough.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴க்தேஷு ப⁴க்தேன ஸ மானிதஸ்த்வயா புரீம் வஸன்னேகனிஶாம் மஹாஸுக²ம் ।
ப³தாபரேத்³யுர்த்³ரவிணம் வினா யயௌ விசித்ரரூபஸ்தவ க²ல்வனுக்³ரஹ: ॥7॥
Meaning
ப⁴க்தேஷு ப⁴க்தேன - in the devotees, devoted (by Thee); ஸ மானித:- - he was honoured; த்வயா புரீம் வஸன்- - by Thee, in the city staying; ஏக நிஶாம் - for one night; மஹா-ஸுக²ம் - very happily; ப³த-அபரேத்³யு:- - alas! Next day; த்³ரவிணம் வினா யயௌ - wealth without went away; விசித்ர-ரூப:-தவ - of strange forms are Thy; க²லு-அனுக்³ரஹ: - indeed blessings;
Translation
He was greatly honoured by Thee the devoted of the devotees, and very happily stayed in Thy city for one night. The next day he went away alas without any wealth. Strange indeed are Thy forms of blessings.
ஶ்லோக:
யதி³ ஹ்யயாசிஷ்யமதா³ஸ்யத³ச்யுதோ வதா³மி பா⁴ர்யாம் கிமிதி வ்ரஜன்னஸௌ ।
த்வது³க்திலீலாஸ்மிதமக்³னதீ⁴: புன: க்ரமாத³பஶ்யன்மணிதீ³ப்ரமாலயம் ॥8॥
Meaning
யதி³ ஹி-அயாசிஷ்யம்- - if indeed I had asked; அதா³ஸ்யத்-அச்யுத: - would have given Krishna; வதா³மி பா⁴ர்யாம் கிம்-இதி - will tell my wife what, thus; வ்ரஜன்-அஸௌ - walking he; த்வத்-உக்தி-லீலா-ஸ்மித- - Thy talks and playful smile; மக்³ன-தீ⁴: புன: - with mind immersed in then; க்ரமாத்-அபஶ்யத்- - gradually saw; மணி-தீ³ப்ரம்-ஆலயம் - with gems resplendent house;
Translation
Had I but asked for wealth Krishna would surely have given. What shall I tell my wife?' Thus telling himself he walked along immersed in the memories of Thy talks and Thy playful smile. By and by he reached a gem studded splendorous mansion.
ஶ்லோக:
கிம் மார்க³விப்⁴ரம்ஶ இதி ப்⁴ரம்மன் க்ஷணம் க்³ருஹம் ப்ரவிஷ்ட: ஸ த³த³ர்ஶ வல்லபா⁴ம் ।
ஸகீ²பரீதாம் மணிஹேமபூ⁴ஷிதாம் பு³போ³த⁴ ச த்வத்கருணாம் மஹாத்³பு⁴தாம் ॥9॥
Meaning
கிம் மார்க-³விப்⁴ரம்ஶ - what is the way lost; இதி ப்⁴ரம்மன் க்ஷணம் - thus wondering for a moment; க்³ருஹம் ப்ரவிஷ்ட: - the house entering; ஸ த³த³ர்ஶ வல்லபா⁴ம் - he saw his wife; ஸகீ²-பரீதாம் - by ladies in waiting surrounded; மணி-ஹேம-பூ⁴ஷிதாம் - with gems and gold ornaments adorned; பு³போ³த⁴ ச - realised also; த்வத்-கருணாம் - Thy compassion; மஹா-அத்³பு⁴தாம் - most wonderful;
Translation
What have I lost my way?' Thus wondering for a moment he entered the house. He saw his wife adorned in ornaments of gems and gold and surrounded by ladies in waiting. He then realised Thy grace and compassion and the most wonderful results of the same.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ ரத்னஶாலாஸு வஸன்னபி ஸ்வயம் ஸமுன்னமத்³ப⁴க்திப⁴ரோம்ருதம் யயௌ ।
த்வமேவமாபூரிதப⁴க்தவாஞ்சி²தோ மருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ ஹரஸ்வ மே க³தா³ன் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஸ ரத்ன-ஶாலாஸு - he in the gem studded building; வஸன்-அபி ஸ்வயம் - residing though, himself; ஸமுன்னமத்³-ப⁴க்தி-ப⁴ர:- - incessantly growing devotion, full of it; அம்ருதம் யயௌ - liberation attained; த்வம்-ஏவம்-ஆபூரித- - Thou in this manner fulfilled; ப⁴க்த-வாஞ்சி²த: - the devotees' desires; மருத்புராதீ⁴ஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ஹரஸ்வ மே க³தா³ன் - rid me of my ailments;
Translation
Residing in the begemmed mansion he himself was full of devotion for Thee which incessantly grew of its own. In the end he attained liberation. Thou in such a manner fulfilled the desire of Thy devotee. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Be pleased to rid me of my ailments.
