ஶ்லோக:
அத² வாரிணி கோ⁴ரதரம் ப²ணினம்
ப்ரதிவாரயிதும் க்ருததீ⁴ர்ப⁴க³வன் ।
த்³ருதமாரித² தீரக³னீபதரும்
விஷமாருதஶோஷிதபர்ணசயம் ॥1॥
Meaning
அத² வாரிணி - then in the water; கோ⁴ரதரம் ப²ணினம் - very fierce that serpent; ப்ரதிவாரயிதும் - to drive away; க்ருததீ⁴: - having decided; ப⁴க³வன் - O Lord; த்³ருதம்-ஆரித² - quickly (Thou) approached; தீரக-³னீப-தரும் - the bank situated Kadamba tree; விஷ-மாருத-ஶோஷித- - the poisoned breeze had dried up; பர்ண-சயம் - the cluster of leaves;
Translation
O Lord! Thou then made up Thy mind to drive away the fierce serpent from the waters. Thou quickly approached and got up on a Kadamba tree standing on the bank of the river, with its leaves withered due to the poisonous breeze.
ஶ்லோக:
அதி⁴ருஹ்ய பதா³ம்பு³ருஹேண ச தம்
நவபல்லவதுல்யமனோஜ்ஞருசா ।
ஹ்ரத³வாரிணி தூ³ரதரம் ந்யபத:
பரிகூ⁴ர்ணிதகோ⁴ரதரனக்³க³ணே ॥2॥
Meaning
அதி⁴ருஹ்ய - climbing with; பத-³அம்பு³-ருஹேண - feet tender lotus like; ச தம் - and that (tree); நவ-பல்லவ-துல்ய- - like tender new leaves; மனோஜ்ஞ-ருசா - charming and splendorous; ஹ்ரத-³வாரிணி - into the deep water; தூ³ரதரம் ந்யபத: - far out (Thou) jumped; பரிகூ⁴ர்ணித- - with swirling; கோ⁴ர-தரனக-³க³ணே - fierce waves of water;
Translation
Thou climbed that tree with Thy lotus like splendorous charming feet resembling tender leaves, and with a long leap jumped far out into the deep waters with swirling fierce waves.
ஶ்லோக:
பு⁴வனத்ரயபா⁴ரப்⁴ருதோ ப⁴வதோ
கு³ருபா⁴ரவிகம்பிவிஜ்ரும்பி⁴ஜலா ।
பரிமஜ்ஜயதி ஸ்ம த⁴னுஶ்ஶதகம்
தடினீ ஜ²டிதி ஸ்பு²டகோ⁴ஷவதீ ॥3॥
Meaning
பு⁴வன-த்ரய-பா⁴ர-ப்⁴ருத: - of the three worlds the weight bearing; ப⁴வத: கு³ரு-பா⁴ர- - of Thee the immense weight (causing); விகம்பி-விஜ்ரும்பி⁴-ஜலா - swirling and swelling with its waters; பரிமஜ்ஜயதி ஸ்ம - started to submerge; த⁴னு:-ஶதகம் - the area of a hundred bows (in measurement); தடினீ ஜ²டிதி - on the river bed, and suddenly; ஸ்பு²ட-கோ⁴ஷவதீ - (the river) made an intense roar;
Translation
When, Thou the bearer of the weight of the three worlds, jumped, Thy immense weight caused the waters to swirl and swell. On the river bed an area of a hundred bows (yards) submerged, as a sudden roar arose from the river.
ஶ்லோக:
அத² தி³க்ஷு விதி³க்ஷு பரிக்ஷுபி⁴த-
ப்⁴ரமிதோத³ரவாரினினாத³ப⁴ரை: ।
உத³காது³த³கா³து³ரகா³தி⁴பதி-
ஸ்த்வது³பாந்தமஶாந்தருஷாந்த⁴மனா: ॥4॥
Meaning
அத² தி³க்ஷு விதி³க்ஷு - then, in all the directions and the intermediary directions; பரிக்ஷுபி⁴த-ப்⁴ரமித- - turbulent swirling; உத³ர-வாரி-னினாத-³ப⁴ரை: - from the middle of the waters roaring aloud; உத³காத்-உத³கா³த்- - from (that) water came out; உரகா³தி⁴பதி:- - the king of serpents; த்வத்-உபாந்தம்- - near Thee; அஶாந்த-ருஷா- - disturbed and angered; அந்த⁴மனா: - and so blinded (with rage);
Translation
The loud roar from the middle of the waters which extended to all the directions and the intermediary directions, disturbed and angered the serpent king Kaaliya. He came out of the water and rushed up to Thee in a fit of blinded anger.
ஶ்லோக:
ப²ணஶ்ருனக³ஸஹஸ்ரவினிஸ்ஸ்ருமர-
ஜ்வலத³க்³னிகணோக்³ரவிஷாம்பு³த⁴ரம் ।
புரத: ப²ணினம் ஸமலோகயதா²
ப³ஹுஶ்ருனகி³ணமஞ்ஜனஶைலமிவ ॥5॥
Meaning
ப²ண-ஶ்ருனக-³ - (with) hoods , peak (like); ஸஹஸ்ர-வினி:ஸ்ருமர- - thousands of them emitting; ஜ்வலத்-அக்³னி-கண- - burning like fire flakes; உக்³ர-விஷ-அம்பு³த⁴ரம் - fierce poison fluid bearing; புரத: ப²ணினம் - in front the serpent; ஸமலோகயதா²: - (Thou) saw; ப³ஹு-ஶ்ருனகி³-க³ணம்- - many peaked; அஞ்ஜன-ஶைலம்-இவ - black mountain, as if;
Translation
Thou saw the serpent in front with his thousands of peak like hoods emitting burning fire flakes and fierce poison fluid, looking like a many peaked black mountain.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜ்வலத³க்ஷி பரிக்ஷரது³க்³ரவிஷ-
ஶ்வஸனோஷ்மப⁴ர: ஸ மஹாபு⁴ஜக:³ ।
பரித³ஶ்ய ப⁴வந்தமனந்தப³லம்
ஸமவேஷ்டயத³ஸ்பு²டசேஷ்டமஹோ ॥6॥
Meaning
ஜ்வலத்-அக்ஷி - with flaming eyes; பரிக்ஷரத்-உக்³ர-விஷ- - emitting deadly poison; ஶ்வஸன்-ஊஷ்மப⁴ர: - breathing out intense heat; ஸ மஹாபு⁴ஜக:³ - that huge serpent; பரித³ஶ்ய - biting; ப⁴வந்தம்-அனந்தப³லம் - Thee of limitless strength; ஸமவேஷ்டயத்- - coiled (around Thee); அஸ்பு²ட-சேஷ்டம்- - making invisible Thy movements; அஹோ - Alas;
Translation
Alas! That huge serpent emitting deadly poison and breathing out intense heat, bit Thee of limitless strength, all over Thy body. Then it coiled around Thee making Thy body and Thy movements invisible.
ஶ்லோக:
அவிலோக்ய ப⁴வந்தமதா²குலிதே
தடகா³மினி பா³லகதே⁴னுக³ணே ।
வ்ரஜகே³ஹதலேப்யனிமித்தஶதம்
ஸமுதீ³க்ஷ்ய க³தா யமுனாம் பஶுபா: ॥7॥
Meaning
அவிலோக்ய ப⁴வந்தம்- - not seeing Thee; அத-²ஆகுலிதே - then distressed; தட-கா³மினி - (who) to the bank (of river Yamunaa) had come; பா³லக-தே⁴னு-க³ணே - the children and the cows all; வ்ரஜ-கே³ஹ-தலே-அபி- - in Gokula houses also; அனிமித்த-ஶதம் - evil omens innumerable; ஸமுதீ³க்ஷ்ய க³தா - seeing went; யமுனாம் பஶுபா: - towards Yamunaa the Gopas;
Translation
The Gopa boys and the cows were distressed when they did not see Thee, and went to the bank of the river Yamunaa. In the houses in Gokula also the Gopas saw hundreds of evil omens and they also rushed towards Yamunaa.
ஶ்லோக:
அகி²லேஷு விபோ⁴ ப⁴வதீ³ய த³ஶா-
மவலோக்ய ஜிஹாஸுஷு ஜீவப⁴ரம் ।
ப²ணிப³ந்த⁴னமாஶு விமுச்ய ஜவா-
து³த³க³ம்யத ஹாஸஜுஷா ப⁴வதா ॥8॥
Meaning
அகி²லேஷு - (as) all of them; விபோ⁴ - O Lord; ப⁴வதீ³ய-த³ஶாம் - Thy plight; அவலோக்ய - seeing; ஜிஹாஸுஷு - ready to give up their; ஜீவப⁴ரம் - lives; ப²ணி-ப³ந்த⁴னம்- - the coils of the snake; ஆஶு விமுச்ய - quickly shedding; ஜவாத்-உத³க³ம்யத - hastily emerged; ஹாஸஜுஷா ப⁴வதா - with a smile, Thou;
Translation
O Lord! All of them were overwhelmed with grief on seeing Thy plight and were ready to give up their lives in order to save Thee. Just then, Thou quickly shed the coils of the snake and hastily emerged with a smile.
ஶ்லோக:
அதி⁴ருஹ்ய தத: ப²ணிராஜப²ணான்
நன்ருதே ப⁴வதா ம்ருது³பாத³ருசா ।
கலஶிஞ்ஜிதனூபுரமஞ்ஜுமில-
த்கரகனகணஸனகுலஸனக்வணிதம் ॥9॥
Meaning
அதி⁴ருஹ்ய தத: - climbing upon then; ப²ணி-ராஜ-ப²ணான் - the serpent king,s hoods; நன்ருதே ப⁴வதா - dance was performed by Thee; ம்ருது³-பாத-³ருசா - with delicate feet beautiful; கலஶிஞ்ஜித-னூபுர- - the gentle sound of the anklets; மஞ்ஜு-மிலத்- - beautifully mingling with; கர-கனகண-ஸனகுல- - the bangles on the wrists'; ஸனக்வணிதம் - tinkling;
Translation
Then Thou mounted on the hoods of the serpent king and danced with Thy delicate beautiful feet. The gentle sound of the anklets mingled beautifully and rhythmically with the tinkling of the bangles on Thy wrists.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜஹ்ருஷு: பஶுபாஸ்துதுஷுர்முனயோ
வவ்ருஷு: குஸுமானி ஸுரேந்த்³ரக³ணா: ।
த்வயி ந்ருத்யதி மாருதகே³ஹபதே
பரிபாஹி ஸ மாம் த்வமதா³ந்தக³தா³த் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ஜஹ்ருஷு: பஶுபா:- - rejoiced the Gopas; துதுஷு:-முனய: - sang hymns the sages; வவ்ருஷு: குஸுமானி - showered flowers; ஸுரேந்த்³ர-க³ணா: - the gods' groups; த்வயி ந்ருத்யதி - when Thou danced; மாருதகே³ஹபதே - O Lord of Guruvaayur; பரிபாஹி - save; ஸ - That (Thou); மாம் - me; த்வம்- - Thou; அதா³ந்த-க³தா³த் - (from) severe illness;
Translation
As Thou performed the dance, the Gopas rejoiced, the sages sang hymns, and the gods showered flowers. O Lord of the Guruvaayur temple! Such that Thou are, save me from the severe illness.
