পুরা - long ago; হযগ্রীব-মহা-অসুরেণ - by Hayagreeva, the great Asura; ষষ্ঠ-অংতরাংত-উদ্যত্- - at the end of the sixth Manvantara; অকাংড-কল্পে - in the Naimittika Pralaya; নিদ্রা-উন্মুখ-ব্রহ্ম-মুখাত্- - from the mouth of Brahmaa who was about to sleep; হৃতেষু বেদেষু- - when the Vedas were stolen; অধিত্সঃ কিল - (Thou) desired to assume; মত্স্য়-রূপম্ - the form of a Fish;
Translation
Long ago during the Pralaya which took place at the end of the sixth Manvantara, when Brahmaa was about to sleep, the great Asura Hayagreeva stole the Vedas from his mouth. In order to restore them, Thou decided to incarnate as a fish.

সত্যব্রতস্য় দ্রমিলাধিভর্তুর্নদীজলে তর্পযতস্তদানীম্ ।
করাংজলৌ সংজ্বলিতাকৃতিস্ত্বমদৃশ্যথাঃ কশ্চন বালমীনঃ ॥2॥
Meaning
সত্যব্রতস্য় - of Satyavrata (the sage who was); দ্রমিল-অধিভর্তুঃ- - Dramila's king; নদীজলে - in the waters of the river (Kritamala); তর্পযতঃ-তদানীম্ - when he was doing Tarpan; কর-অংজলৌ - in his joined palms; সংজ্বলিত-আকৃতিঃ- - (in a) lustrous form; ত্বম্-অদৃশ্যথাঃ - Thou appeared to be seen as; কশ্চন বালমীন - some (indescribable) tiny fish;
Translation
Sage Satyavrata, the king of Dramila, was doing Tarpana in the waters of the river Kritamaalaa. In his joined palms, then, Thou appeared as an lustrous indescribable form of a shining tiny fish.

ক্ষিপ্তং জলে ত্বাং চকিতং বিলোক্য় নিন্য়েঽংবুপাত্রেণ মুনিঃ স্বগেহম্ ।
স্বল্পৈরহোভিঃ কলশীং চ কূপং বাপীং সরশ্চানশিষে বিভো ত্বম্ ॥3॥
Meaning
ক্ষিপ্তং জলে - when thrown in the water; ত্বাং চকিতং বিলোক্য় - seeing Thee very frightened; নিন্য়ে-অংবু-পাত্রেণ - carried (Thee) in the water vessel (kamandalu); মুনিঃ স্বগেহম্ - the sage (Satyavrata) to his own house; স্বল্পৈঃ-অহোভিঃ - in a few days; কলশীং চ কূপং - the pot and the well; বাপীং সরঃ-চ- - the tank and the lake; আনশিষে - (Thou) did outgrow; বিভো ত্বম্ - O Lord! Thou;
Translation
When the royal sage threw Thee in the water, seeing Thee very frightened he took Thee to his home in the kamandalu, the water vessel. In a few days, Thou outgrew the pot, the well, the tank and the lake.

যোগপ্রভাবাদ্ভবদাজ্ঞয়ৈব নীতস্ততস্ত্বং মুনিনা পয়োধিম্ ।
পৃষ্টোঽমুনা কল্পদিদৃক্ষুমেনং সপ্তাহমাস্বেতি বদন্নয়াসীঃ ॥4॥
Meaning
যোগ-প্রভাবাত্- - by his yogic powers; ভবত্-আজ্ঞয়া-এব - according to Thy command alone; নীতঃ-ততঃ-ত্বম্ - Thou were then taken; মুনিনা পয়োধিম্ - by the sage to the ocean; পৃষ্টঃ-অমুনা - requested by him; কল্প-দিদৃক্ষুম্-এনম্ - desirous to see the pralaya, to him; সপ্ত-আহম্-আস্ব-ইতি - for seven days wait, thus; বদন্-অয়াসীঃ - saying (Thou) disappeared;
Translation
Then at Thy command sage Satyavrata took Thee to the ocean by means of his yogic powers. On his expressing a desire to see the Pralaya, Thou asked him to wait for seven days. Then Thou disappeared.

প্রাপ্তে ত্বদুক্তেঽহনি বারিধারাপরিপ্লুতে ভূমিতলে মুনীংদ্রঃ ।
সপ্তর্ষিভিঃ সার্ধমপারবারিণ্য়ুদ্ঘূর্ণমানঃ শরণং যয়ৌ ত্বাম্ ॥5॥
Meaning
প্রাপ্তে ত্বত্-উক্তে-অহনি - when the day mentioned by Thee arrived; বারি-ধারা-পরিপ্লুতে ভূমিতলে - by incessant downpour of rain engulfed was the earth; মুনীংদ্রঃ সপ্তর্ষিভিঃ সার্ধম্- - the great sage along with the Saptarshis; অপার্-বারিণি-উদ্ঘূর্ণমানঃ - floundering in the vast limitless tremulous waters; শরণং যয়ৌ ত্বাম্ - sought refuge in Thee;
Translation
When the day mentioned by Thee arrived, the earth was engulfed by incessant downpour of rain. The great sage Satyavrata along with the Saptarshis floundering in the limitless expanse of tremulous waters sought refuge in Thee.

ধরাং ত্বদাদেশকরীমবাপ্তাং নৌরূপিণীমারুরুহুস্তদা তে
তত্কংপকংপ্রেষু চ তেষু ভূযস্ত্বমংবুধেরাবিরভূর্মহীয়ান্ ॥6॥

ধরাং ত্বত্-আদেশকরীম্- - the earth carrying out Thy command; অবাপ্তাং নৌ-রূপিণীম্- - in the form of a boat approaching; আরুরুহুঃ-তদা তে - boarded then they; তত্-কংপ-কংপ্রেষু - terrified by the boat's trembling; চ তেষু - and when they (were); ভূয়ঃ-ত্বম্- - again Thou; অংবুধেঃ-আবির্ভূঃ- - from the ocean appeared; মহীযন্ - with a huge form (of a fish);
Translation
Ever obedient to Thee the earth in the form of a boat approached at Thy command which they then boarded. And when they were terrified by the boat's trembling, Thou again appeared in the ocean in the form of a huge fish.

ঝষাকৃতিং যোজনলক্ষদীর্ঘাং দধানমুচ্চৈস্তরতেজসং ত্বাম্ ।
নিরীক্ষ্য় তুষ্টা মুনযস্ত্বদুক্ত্য়া ত্বত্তুংগশৃংগে তরণিং ববংধুঃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ঝষ-আকৃতিং - in the form of the fish; যোজন-লক্ষ-দীর্ঘাং - a lakh of yojana in length; দধানম্-উচ্চৈঃ-তর-তেজসম্ - gaining super exceeding glory; ত্বাং নিরীক্ষ্য় তুষ্টাঃ মুনয়ঃ- - seeing Thee, the sages were very happy; ত্বত্-উক্ত্য়া - as commanded by Thee; ত্বত্-তুংগশৃংগে - on Thy high horns; তরণিং ববংধুঃ - (they) tied the boat;
Translation
The sages were delighted to see Thee of exceeding glory in the form of a fish about a lakh of yojanas in length. At Thy command, they tied the boat to Thy high prominent horns.

আকৃষ্টনৌকো মুনিমংডলায় প্রদর্শযন্ বিশ্বজগদ্বিভাগান্ ।
সংস্তূযমানো নৃবরেণ তেন জ্ঞানং পরং চোপদিশন্নচারীঃ ॥8॥

আকৃষ্ট-নৌকঃ - pulling the boat; মুনি-মংডলায় প্রদর্শযন্ - to the group of sages showing; বিশ্ব-জগত্-বিভাগান্ - the world and its various regions; সংস্তূযমানঃ - Thee being praised; নৃবরেণ তেন - by that great king Satyavrata; জ্ঞানং পরং - (Thou) the highest knowledge; চ-উপদিশন্- - and bestowing; অচারীঃ - moved about;
Translation
As Thou pulled the boat, Thou showed the sages the various regions of the world. The great king Satyavrata sang hymns of Thy glory, and Thou moved about bestowing on him the knowledge of the Aatman.

কল্পাবধৌ সপ্তমুনীন্ পুরোবত্ প্রস্থাপ্য় সত্যব্রতভূমিপং তম্ ।
বৈবস্বতাখ্য়ং মনুমাদধানঃ ক্রোধাদ্ হযগ্রীবমভিদ্রুতোঽভূঃ ॥9॥
Meaning
কল্প-অবধৌ - At the end of the Pralaya,; সপ্তমুনীন্ - the seven sages; পুরোবত্ প্রস্থাপ্য় - installed them in their places as before; সত্যব্রত-ভূমিপং তং - that king Satyavrata; বৈবস্বত-আখ্য়ং - by the name of Vaivasvata; মনুম্-আদধানঃ - installed as Manu; ক্রোধাত্-হযগ্রীবম্-অভিদ্রুতঃ-অভূঃ - (then) in great wrath attacked the demon Hayagreeva;
Translation
At the end of the Pralaya, Thou installed the seven sages in their places as before. The king Satyavrata was installed as the Vaivasvata Manu. Then Thou attacked the demon Hayagreeva in great rage.

স্বতুংগশৃংগক্ষতবক্ষসং তং নিপাত্য় দৈত্য়ং নিগমান্ গৃহীত্বা ।

স্ব-তুংগ-শৃংগ-ক্ষত-বক্ষসং - whose chest was torn apart by Thy high horn; তং নিপাত্য় দৈত্য়ং - killing that Asura; নিগমান্ গৃহীত্বা - recovering the Vedas; বিরিংচয়ে প্রীতহৃদে দদানঃ - (Thou) gave to Brahmaa who was very happy; প্রভংজন-আগারপতে - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; প্রপায়াঃ - protect me;
Translation
Thou with Thy great horns tore apart the chest of the Asura Hayagreeva and killed him. Then recovering the Vedas, handed them over to the delighted Brahmaa. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Protect me.
