ශ්රී රුද්රම්, also called the රුද්ර-ප්රශ්නඃ, is one of the most revered hymns of the කෘෂ්ණ යජුර්වේද, found in the තෛත්තිරීය සංහිත (4.5). It is a Vedic salutation to රුද්ර - the power that can appear fearsome as the remover of ignorance and obstacles, and compassionate as the healer who restores harmony.
The recitation traditionally has two parts: නමකම් (the section centered on repeated නමඃ - "salutations / surrender") and චමකම් (the section centered on ච මේ - "and to me"). Read together, they move from humility and appeasement, to praise of රුද්ර in every direction and form, to prayer for wellbeing, inner strength, and a complete, well-ordered life.
කෘෂ්ණ යජුර්වේදීය තෛත්තිරීය සංහිතා
චතුර්ථං-වෛඁශ්වදේවං කාංඩං පංචමඃ ප්රපාඨකඃ
ඕං නමෝ භගවතේ॑ රුද්රා॒ය ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
Om. Salutations to the blessed Lord Rudra.
නම॑ස්තේ රුද්ර ම॒න්යව॑ උ॒තෝත॒ ඉෂ॑වේ॒ නමඃ॑ ।
නම॑ස්තේ අස්තු॒ ධන්ව॑නේ බා॒හුභ්යා॑මු॒ත තේ॒ නමඃ॑ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
O Rudra, salutations to your fierce power and to your arrow; salutations to your bow and to your two arms.
යා ත॒ ඉෂුඃ॑ ශි॒වත॑මා ශි॒වං බ॒භූව॑ තේ॒ ධනුඃ॑ ।
ශි॒වා ශ॑ර॒ව්යා॑ යා තව॒ තයා॑ නෝ රුද්ර මෘඩය ।
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
May your arrow, bow, and quiver become auspicious and benevolent; with that, O Rudra, be gracious to us.
යා තේ॑ රුද්ර ශි॒වා ත॒නූරඝෝ॒රාऽපා॑පකාශිනී ।
තයා॑ නස්ත॒නුවා॒ ශංත॑මයා॒ ගිරි॑ශංතා॒භිචා॑කශීහි ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
O Rudra, with your peaceful, non-harmful, purifying form, look upon us graciously, O Lord of the mountains.
යාමිෂුං॑ ගිරිශංත॒ හස්තේ॒ බිභ॒ර්ෂ්යස්ත॑වේ ।
ශි॒වාං ගි॑රිත්ර॒ තාං කු॑රු॒ මා හිග්ම්॑සීඃ॒ පුරු॑ෂං॒ ජග॑ත්॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
O mountain-roamer, make the arrow in your hand auspicious; do not harm people or the world.
ශි॒වේන॒ වච॑සා ත්වා॒ ගිරි॒ශාච්ඡා॑ වදාමසි ।
යථා॑ නඃ॒ සර්ව॒මිජ්ජග॑දය॒ක්ෂ්මග්ම් සු॒මනා॒ අස॑ත් ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
O Lord of the mountains, we pray to you with auspicious words; may this whole world be free of affliction and may our hearts be well-disposed.
අධ්ය॑වෝචදධිව॒ක්තා ප්ර॑ථ॒මෝ දෛව්යෝ॑ භි॒ෂක් ।
අහීග්॑ශ්ච॒ සර්වාං᳚ජං॒භය॒න්-ථ්සර්වා᳚ශ්ච යාතුධා॒න්යඃ॑ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
May the foremost divine healer speak on our behalf and subdue all poisons and destructive forces.
අ॒සෞ යස්තා॒ම්රෝ අ॑රු॒ණ උ॒ත බ॒භ්රුස්සු॑මං॒ගලඃ॑ ।
යේ චේ॒මාග්ම් රු॒ද්රා අ॒භිතෝ॑ දි॒ක්ෂු ශ්රි॒තාඃ ස॑හස්ර॒ශෝऽවෛ॑ෂා॒ග්ම්॒ හේඩ॑ ඊමහේ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
To the auspicious Rudra who appears in many hues, and to the Rudras established in all directions, we offer salutations to soften their fierce intensity.
අ॒සෞ යෝ॑ऽව॒සර්ප॑ති॒ නීල॑ග්රීවෝ॒ විලෝ॑හිතඃ ।
උ॒තෛනං॑ ගෝ॒පා අ॑දෘශ॒න්නදෘ॑ශන්නුදහා॒ර්යඃ॑ ।
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
That blue-necked, red-hued Rudra who moves about is seen by cowherds and by those who draw water.
උ॒තෛනං॒-විඁශ්වා॑ භූ॒තානි॒ ස දෘ॒ෂ්ටෝ මෘ॑ඩයාති නඃ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
All beings see him; may he, being perceived everywhere, be gracious to us.
නමෝ॑ අස්තු॒ නීල॑ග්රීවාය සහස්රා॒ක්ෂාය॑ මී॒ඪුෂේ᳚ ।
අථෝ॒ යේ අ॑ස්ය॒ සත්වා॑නෝ॒ऽහං තේභ්යෝ॑ऽකර॒න්නමඃ॑ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
Salutations to the blue-necked, thousand-eyed, bountiful Lord - and to all his attendant forms.
ප්රමුං॑ච॒ ධන්ව॑න॒ස්ත්වමු॒භයෝ॒රාර්ත්නි॑ යෝ॒ර්ජ්යාම් ।
යාශ්ච॑ තේ॒ හස්ත॒ ඉෂ॑වඃ॒ පරා॒ තා භ॑ගවෝ වප ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
Loosen your bowstring from both ends, and set aside the arrows in your hand, O Lord.
අ॒ව॒තත්ය॒ ධනු॒ස්ත්වග්ම් සහ॑ස්රාක්ෂ॒ ශතේ॑ෂුධේ ।
නි॒ශීර්ය॑ ශ॒ල්යානාං॒ මුඛා॑ ශි॒වෝ නඃ॑ සු॒මනා॑ භව ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
Unstring the bow, blunt the arrow-points, and be benevolent and kindly disposed toward us.
විජ්යං॒ ධනුඃ॑ කප॒ර්දිනෝ॒ විශ॑ල්යෝ॒ බාණ॑වාග්ම් උ॒ත ।
අනේ॑ශන්න॒ස්යේෂ॑ව ආ॒භුර॑ස්ය නිෂං॒ගථිඃ॑ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
May the bow of the matted-haired Lord be unstrung, the arrows harmless, and the quiver non-threatening.
යා තේ॑ හේ॒තිර්මී॑ඩුෂ්ටම॒ හස්තේ॑ බ॒භූව॑ තේ॒ ධනුඃ॑ ।
තයා॒ऽස්මාන්, වි॒ශ්වත॒ස්ත්වම॑ය॒ක්ෂ්මයා॒ පරි॑බ්භුජ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
With that weapon-power and bow in your hand, protect us on all sides and keep us free from affliction.
නම॑ස්තේ අ॒ස්ත්වායු॑ධා॒යානා॑තතාය ධෘ॒ෂ්ණවේ᳚ ।
උ॒භාභ්යා॑මු॒ත තේ॒ නමෝ॑ බා॒හුභ්යාං॒ තව॒ ධන්ව॑නේ ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
Salutations to your readied weapon, to your strong arms, and to your bow.
පරි॑ තේ॒ ධන්ව॑නෝ හේ॒තිර॒ස්මාන් වෘ॑ණක්තු වි॒ශ්වතඃ॑ ।
අථෝ॒ ය ඉ॑ෂු॒ධිස්තවා॒රේ අ॒ස්මන්නිධේ॑හි॒ තම් ॥ 1 ॥
Translation (භාවාර්ථ):
May the missile-power of your bow not strike us but turn away on all sides; place your quiver far away from us. (End of Anuvaka 1.)
