Prashnopanishad - Question 4 - Punjabi

The fourth question of ਪ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਨੋਪਨਿਸ਼ਦ੍ asks what sleeps, what remains awake, who sees dreams, who experiences happiness, and in whom everything is finally established. Pippalada answers by analyzing sleep, dream, deep rest, and the return of all faculties into the supreme Self.

This question is closely related to the Mandukya Upanishad but uses its own imagery. The senses rest like rays withdrawing into the sun, while prana remains awake like sacred fires. Dream is the mind's field of remembered and recombined experience; deep sleep gives a taste of undivided rest when the mind is overpowered by light.

ਚਤੁਰ੍ਥਃ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਨਃ

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
This title announces the fourth question of the Prashna Upanishad.

ਅਥ ਹੈਨਂ ਸੌਰ੍ਯਾਯਣਿ ਗਾਰ੍ਗ੍ਯਃ ਪਪ੍ਰਚ੍ਛ।
ਭਗਵਨ੍ਨੇਤਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ ਪੁਰੁਸ਼ੇ ਕਾਨਿ ਸ੍ਵਪਂਤਿ ਕਾਨ੍ਯਸ੍ਮਿਂਜਾਗ੍ਰਤਿ ਕਤਰ ਏਸ਼ ਦੇਵਃ ਸ੍ਵਪ੍ਨਾਨ੍ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਕਸ੍ਯੈਤਤ੍ਸੁਖਂ ਭਵਤਿ ਕਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ਨੁ ਸਰ੍ਵੇ ਸਂਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਿਤਾ ਭਵਂਤੀਤਿ ॥1॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
Gargya asks which powers sleep, which remain awake, who sees dreams, whose happiness is experienced, and where all are established.

ਤਸ੍ਮੈ ਸ ਹੋਵਾਚ। ਯਥ ਗਾਰ੍ਗ੍ਯ ਮਰੀਚਯੋ਽ਰ੍ਕਸ੍ਯਾਸ੍ਤਂ ਗਚ੍ਛਤਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਾ ਏਤਸ੍ਮਿਂਸ੍ਤੇਜੋਮਂਡਲ ਏਕੀਭਵਂਤਿ।
ਤਾਃ ਪੁਨਃ ਪੁਨਰੁਦਯਤਃ ਪ੍ਰਚਰਂਤ੍ਯੇਵਂ ਹ ਵੈ ਤਤ੍ ਸਰ੍ਵਂ ਪਰੇ ਦੇਵੇ ਮਨਸ੍ਯੇਕੀਭਵਤਿ।
ਤੇਨ ਤਰ੍ਹ੍ਯੇਸ਼ ਪੁਰੁਸ਼ੋ ਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣੋਤਿ ਨ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਨ ਜਿਘ੍ਰਤਿ ਨ ਰਸਯਤੇ ਨ ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਤੇ ਨਾਭਿਵਦਤੇ ਨਾਦਤ੍ਤੇ ਨਾਨਂਦਯਤੇ ਨ ਵਿਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜਤੇ ਨੇਯਾਯਤੇ ਸ੍ਵਪਿਤੀਤ੍ਯਾਚਕ੍ਸ਼ਤੇ ॥2॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
Pippalada says that as the sun's rays gather into the solar orb at sunset, the senses gather into the mind during sleep.

ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਗ੍ਰਯ ਏਵੈਤਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ ਪੁਰੇ ਜਾਗ੍ਰਤਿ।
ਗਾਰ੍ਹਪਤ੍ਯੋ ਹ ਵਾ ਏਸ਼ੋ਽ਪਾਨੋ ਵ੍ਯਾਨੋ਽ਨ੍ਵਾਹਾਰ੍ਯਪਚਨੋ ਯਦ੍ ਗਾਰ੍ਹਪਤ੍ਯਾਤ੍ ਪ੍ਰਣੀਯਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਣਯਨਾਦਾਹਵਨੀਯਃ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਃ ॥3॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
In the city of the body, the pranas remain awake like sacred fires.

ਯਦੁਚ੍ਛ੍ਵਾਸਨਿਃਸ਼੍ਵਾਸਾਵੇਤਾਵਾਹੁਤੀ ਸਮਂ ਨਯਤੀਤਿ ਸ ਸਮਾਨਃ।
ਮਨੋ ਹ ਵਾਵ ਯਜਮਾਨਃ ਇਸ਼੍ਟਫਲਮੇਵੋਦਾਨਃ ਸ ਏਨਂ ਯਜਮਾਨਮਹਰਹਰ੍ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮ ਗਮਯਤਿ ॥4॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
Samana equalizes inhalation and exhalation, mind is the sacrificer, and udana leads the sacrificer day by day toward Brahman.

ਅਤ੍ਰੈਸ਼ ਦੇਵਃ ਸ੍ਵਪ੍ਨੇ ਮਹਿਮਾਨਮਨੁਭਵਤਿ।
ਯਦ੍ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਂ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਮਨੁਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਮੇਵਾਰ੍ਥਮਨੁਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣੋਤਿ ਦੇਸ਼ਦਿਗਂਤਰੈਸ਼੍ਚ ਪ੍ਰਤ੍ਯਨੁਭੂਤਂ ਪੁਨਃ ਪੁਨਃ ਪ੍ਰਤ੍ਯਨੁਭਵਤਿ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਂ ਚਾਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਂ ਚ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਂ ਚਾਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਂ ਚਾਨੁਭੂਤਂ ਚਾਨਨੁਭੂਤਂ ਚ ਸਚ੍ਚਾਸਚ੍ਚ ਸਰ੍ਵਂ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਸਰ੍ਵਃ ਪਸ੍ਯਤਿ ॥5॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
In dream, the inner deity of mind experiences greatness by seeing again what was seen, hearing again what was heard, and recombining known and unknown experiences.

ਸ ਯਦਾ ਤੇਜਸਾਭਿਭੂਤੋ ਭਵਤ੍ਯਤ੍ਰੈਸ਼ ਦੇਵਃ ਸ੍ਵਪ੍ਨਾਨ੍ ਨ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤ੍ਯਥ ਯਦੈਤਸ੍ਮਿਞ੍ਸ਼ਰੀਰੇ ਏਤਤ੍ਸੁਖਂ ਭਵਤਿ ॥6॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
When overcome by light, the mind does not see dreams; then happiness arises in the body.

ਸ ਯਥਾ ਸੋਭ੍ਯ ਵਯਾਂਸਿ ਵਸੋਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਕ੍ਸ਼ਂ ਸਂਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਂਤੇ ਏਵਂ ਹ ਵੈ ਤਤ੍ ਸਰ੍ਵਂ ਪਰ ਆਤ੍ਮਨਿ ਸਂਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਤੇ ॥7॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
As birds return to a tree, all this returns to the supreme Self.

ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਿਵੀ ਚ ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਿਵੀਮਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਚਾਪਸ਼੍ਚਾਪੋਮਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਚ ਤੇਜਸ਼੍ਚ ਤੇਜੋਮਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਚ ਵਾਯੁਸ਼੍ਚ ਵਾਯੁਮਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਚਾਕਾਸ਼ਸ਼੍ਚਾਕਾਸ਼ਮਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਚ ਚਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਸ਼੍ਚ ਦ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਟਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤ੍ਰਂ ਚ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਘ੍ਰਾਣਂ ਚ ਘ੍ਰਾਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਰਸਸ਼੍ਚ ਰਸਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਤ੍ਵਕ੍ਚ ਸ੍ਪਰ੍ਸ਼ਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਵਾਕ੍ਚ ਵਕ੍ਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਹਸ੍ਤੌ ਚਾਦਾਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚੋਪਸ੍ਥਸ਼੍ਚਾਨਂਦਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਪਾਯੁਸ਼੍ਚ ਵਿਸਰ੍ਜਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਯਾਦੌ ਚ ਗਂਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਮਨਸ਼੍ਚ ਮਂਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਸ਼੍ਚ ਬੋਦ੍ਧਵ੍ਯਂ ਚਾਹਂਕਾਰਸ਼੍ਚਾਹਂਕਰ੍ਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਚਿਤ੍ਤਂ ਚ ਚੇਤਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਤੇਜਸ਼੍ਚ ਵਿਦ੍ਯੋਤਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਸ਼੍ਚ ਵਿਦ੍ਯਾਰਯਿਤਵ੍ਯਂ ਚ ॥8॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
The elements, senses, organs, mind, intellect, ego, memory, light, and prana all settle in the supreme Self.

ਏਸ਼ ਹਿ ਦ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਟ ਸ੍ਪ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਟਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਾ ਘ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਯਿਤਾ ਮਂਤਾ ਬੋਦ੍ਧਾ ਕਰ੍ਤਾ ਵਿਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਪੁਰੁਸ਼ਃ।
ਸ ਪਰੇ਽ਕ੍ਸ਼ਰ ਆਤ੍ਮਨਿ ਸਂਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਤੇ ॥9॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
The conscious person is the seer, toucher, hearer, smeller, taster, thinker, knower, and doer, and is established in the imperishable Self.

ਪਰਮੇਵਾਕ੍ਸ਼ਰਂ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਦ੍ਯਤੇ ਸ ਯੋ ਹ ਵੈ ਤਦਚ੍ਛਾਯਮਸ਼ਰੀਰਮ੍ਲੋਹਿਤਂ ਸ਼ੁਭ੍ਰਮਕ੍ਸ਼ਰਂ ਵੇਦਯਤੇ ਯਸ੍ਤੁ ਸੋਮ੍ਯ ਸ ਸਰ੍ਵਜ੍ਞਃ ਸਰ੍ਵੋ ਭਵਤਿ ਤਦੇਸ਼ ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ ॥10॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
One who knows the shadowless, bodiless, colorless, pure, imperishable Self becomes all-knowing and enters all.

ਵਿਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਸਹ ਦੇਵੈਸ਼੍ਚ ਸਰ੍ਵੈਃ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾ ਭੁਤਾਨਿ ਸਂਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼੍ਠਂਤਿ ਯਤ੍ਰ।
ਤਦਕ੍ਸ਼ਰਂ ਵੇਦਯਤੇ ਯਸ੍ਤੁ ਸੋਮ੍ਯ ਸ ਸਰ੍ਵਜ੍ਞਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਮੇਵਾਵਿਵੇਸ਼ੇਤਿ ॥11॥

Translation (ਭਾਵਾਰ੍ਥ):
The closing verse says that all faculties, deities, pranas, and beings rest in that imperishable which the knower realizes.
