ത്രിദിവവര്ധകിവര്ധിതകൌശലം ത്രിദശദത്തസമസ്തവിഭൂതിമത് ।
ജലധിമധ്യഗതം ത്വമഭൂഷയോ നവപുരം വപുരംചിതരോചിഷാ ॥1॥
Meaning
ത്രിദിവ-വര്ധകി- - heaven's architect; വര്ധിത-കൌശലം - excelling the skill; ത്രിദശ-ദത്ത- - by the gods given; സമസ്ത-വിഭൂതിമത് - all the majesties; ജലധി-മധ്യഗതം - in the ocean's middle situated; ത്വമ്-അഭൂഷയഃ - Thou adorned; നവ-പുരം - the new city; വപുഃ-അംചിത- - by Thy form's marked; രോചിഷാ - resplendence;
Translation
Even though Vishwakarmaa, the divine architect had employed all his excellent skills in building it and the gods had lavished all their divine embellishments on the city, which was situated in the middle of the ocean, it was adorned by the marked resplendence of Thy form.
ശ്ലോകഃ
ദദുഷി രേവതഭൂഭൃതി രേവതീം ഹലഭൃതേ തനയാം വിധിശാസനാത് ।
മഹിതമുത്സവഘോഷമപൂപുഷഃ സമുദിതൈര്മുദിതൈഃ സഹ യാദവൈഃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ദദുഷി - (when) was given; രേവത-ഭൂഭൃതി - by the Revata king; രേവതീം ഹലഭൃതേ - Revatee for Balaraam; തനയാം - the daughter; വിധി-ശാസനാത് - by Brahmaa's instructions; മഹിതമ്-ഉത്സവ- - great festive; ഘോഷമ്-അപൂപുഷഃ - celebration was performed by Thee; സമുദിതൈഃ-മുദിതൈഃ - who had gathered happily; സഹ യാദവൈഃ - with the Yaadavas;
Translation
At the instructions of Brahmaa, the king of Revata gave his daughter Revatee in marriage to Balaraam. On this event with all the Yaadavaas, who had assembled, Thou happily performed a great festive celebration.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അഥ വിദര്ഭസുതാം ഖലു രുക്മിണീം പ്രണയിനീം ത്വയി ദേവ സഹോദരഃ ।
സ്വയമദിത്സത ചേദിമഹീഭുജേ സ്വതമസാ തമസാധുമുപാശ്രയന് ॥3॥
Meaning
അഥ വിദര്ഭ-സുതാം - then, king of Vidarbh's (Bheeshmaka's) daughter; ഖലു രുക്മിണീം - indeed Rukmini; പ്രണയിനീം ത്വയി - in love with Thee; ദേവ സഹോദരഃ - O Lord! Her brother; സ്വയമ്-അദിത്സത - of his own will decided to give; ചേദി-മഹീഭുജേ - to the Chedi king (Shishupaal); സ്വ-തമസാ - because of his Tamas guna, ignorance; തമ്-അസാധുമ്- - him the non virtuous; ഉപാശ്രയന് - having made him a friend;
Translation
The daughter of the king of Vidarbh (Bheeshmaka), Rukmini was indeed in love with Thee. O Lord! Her brother,Rukmi, due to his ignorance caused by his Tamas guna, of his own will resolved to give her to the Chedi king Shishupaal. Rukmi had made friends with Shishupaal who was totally non virtuous.

ചിരധൃതപ്രണയാ ത്വയി ബാലികാ സപദി കാംക്ഷിതഭംഗസമാകുലാ ।
തവ നിവേദയിതും ദ്വിജമാദിശത് സ്വകദനം കദനംഗവിനിര്മിതമ് ॥4॥
Meaning
ചിര-ധൃത-പ്രണയാ - for long holding love; ത്വയി ബാലികാ - for Thee, the girl; സപദി - at once; കാംക്ഷിത-ഭംഗ- - (her) desire being broken; സമാകുലാ - (foreseeing) and distressed; തവ നിവേദയിതുമ് - to Thee, to communicate; ദ്വിജമ്-ആദിശത് - a Braahmin instructed; സ്വ-കദനം - her distress; കദന-അംഗ- - the cruel Cupid; വിനിര്മിതമ് - caused by;
Translation
For a long time holding love for Thee, which was brought about by the cruel Cupid, the girl at once instructed a Brahmin to acquaint Thee of her distress by the immanent threat to the fulfillment of her desire,
ശ്ലോകഃ
ദ്വിജസുതോഽപി ച തൂര്ണമുപായയൌ തവ പുരം ഹി ദുരാശദുരാസദമ് ।
മുദമവാപ ച സാദരപൂജിതഃ സ ഭവതാ ഭവതാപഹൃതാ സ്വയമ് ॥5॥
Meaning
ദ്വിജ-സുതഃ-അപി - the Brahmin boy also; ച തൂര്ണമ്-ഉപായയൌ - and soon reached; തവ പുരം ഹി - Thy city indeed; ദുരാശ-ദുരാസദം - for the wicked inaccessible; മുദമ്-അവാപ ച - and great joy attained; സാദര-പൂജിതഃ - with the honour received; സ ഭവതാ - he (was) by Thee; ഭവ-താപ-ഹൃതാ - (who are) from worldly afflictions, the remover; സ്വയമ് - Thyself;
Translation
The Brahmin boy soon reached Thy city which is inaccessible to wicked minded people. He was highly delighted and attained great joy on being received with honour by Thyself the remover of the worldly travails and afflictions of men.
ശ്ലോകഃ
സ ച ഭവംതമവോചത കുംഡിനേ നൃപസുതാ ഖലു രാജതി രുക്മിണീ ।
ത്വയി സമുത്സുകയാ നിജധീരതാരഹിതയാ ഹി തയാ പ്രഹിതോഽസ്മ്യഹമ് ॥6॥
Meaning
സ ച - he and; ഭവംതമ്-അവോചത - to Thee said; കുംഡിനേ - in Kundina; നൃപ-സുതാ ഖലു - the king's daughter indeed; രാജതി രുക്മിണീ - shines Rukmini; ത്വയി സമുത്സുകയാ - in Thee deeply in love; നിജ-ധീരതാ-രഹിതയാ - her own restrain loosing; ഹി തയാ പ്രഹിതഃ- - indeed by her sent; അസ്മി-അഹമ് - am I;
Translation
And he said to Thee 'In Kundinaa (capital of Vidarbha) lives the noble princess Rukmini. She is deeply in love with Thee. She who has lost her own restrain has indeed sent me here.'
ശ്ലോകഃ
തവ ഹൃതാഽസ്മി പുരൈവ ഗുണൈരഹം ഹരതി മാം കില ചേദിനൃപോഽധുനാ ।
അയി കൃപാലയ പാലയ മാമിതി പ്രജഗദേ ജഗദേകപതേ തയാ ॥7॥
Meaning
തവ ഹൃതാ-അസ്മി - by Thee captivated am I; പുരാ-ഏവ - since long even; ഗുണൈഃ-അഹം - by (Thy) excellences, I; ഹരതി മാം കില - capturing me indeed is; ചേദി-നൃപഃ-അധുനാ - the Chedi king now; അയി കൃപാലയ (കൃപാ-ആലയ) - O Abode of Compassion!; പാലയ മാമ്-ഇതി - save me, thus; പ്രജഗദേ - was prayed; ജഗദേകപതേ (ജഗത്-ഏക-പതേ) - O Lord of the worlds!; തയാ - by her;
Translation
From long since I am a captive of Thy excellences. Now the king of Chedi (Shishupaal) is going to captivate me. O Abode of Compassion! Save me.' O Lord of the worlds! Thus she prayed to Thee.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അശരണാം യദി മാം ത്വമുപേക്ഷസേ സപദി ജീവിതമേവ ജഹാമ്യഹമ് ।
ഇതി ഗിരാ സുതനോരതനോത് ഭൃശം സുഹൃദയം ഹൃദയം തവ കാതരമ് ॥8॥
Meaning
അശരണാമ് - helpless; യദി മാം - if me; ത്വമ്-ഉപേക്ഷസേ - Thou forsake; സപദി ജീവിതമ്-ഏവ - soon life itself; ജഹാമി-അഹമ് - will kill I; ഇതി ഗിരാ സുതനോഃ- - these words of the fair one; അതനോത് ഭൃശം - brought about deep; സുഹൃത്-അയം - by this good hearted (Braahmin); ഹൃദയം തവ കാതരമ് - (in) heart Thy agitation;
Translation
If Thou will forsake me, the helpless one, I will certainly end my life soon.' This massage of the fair Rukmini from the good hearted Braahmin, brought about deep agitation in Thy heart.
ശ്ലോകഃ
അകഥയസ്ത്വമഥൈനമയേ സഖേ തദധികാ മമ മന്മഥവേദനാ ।
നൃപസമക്ഷമുപേത്യ ഹരാമ്യഹം തദയി താം ദയിതാമസിതേക്ഷണാമ് ॥9॥
Meaning
അകഥയഃ- - told; ത്വമ്-അഥ-ഏനമ്- - Thou then to him; അയേ സഖേ - O friend!; തത്-അധികാ - more than her; മമ മന്മഥ-വേദനാ - (are) my love pangs; നൃപ സമക്ഷമ്- - in the front of the kings; ഉപേത്യ ഹരാമി-അഹം - coming there will take away I; തത്-അയി താം - so it is, O (friend), that; ദയിതാമ്-അസിത-ഈക്ഷണാമ് - dear dark eyed one;
Translation
Thou then told him, 'O friend! My love pangs are more intense than hers. Therefore, I will come, and in presence of the kings, take away the dear dark eyed one.'
ശ്ലോകഃ
പ്രമുദിതേന ച തേന സമം തദാ രഥഗതോ ലഘു കുംഡിനമേയിവാന് ।
ഗുരുമരുത്പുരനായക മേ ഭവാന് വിതനുതാം തനുതാം നിഖിലാപദാമ് ॥10॥
Meaning
പ്രമുദിതേന ച - and with the delighted; തേന സമം തദാ - with him then; രഥ-ഗതഃ ലഘു - getting into the chariot immediately; കുംഡിനമ്-ഏയിവാന് - to Kundina (Thou) reached; ഗുരുമരുത്പുരനായക - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; മേ ഭവാന് - of me, Thou; വിതനുതാം തനുതാം - deign to bring about relief; നിഖില-ആപദാമ് - from all my afflictions;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! Along with the highly delighted Braahmin, Thou immediately got into the chariot and soon reached Kundina. May Thou deign to bring about relief for me from all my afflictions.
