daanaM damashcha yajjhNashcha svaadhyaayastapa aarjavam ॥ 1 ॥
ahiMsaa satyamakrOdhastyaagaH shaantirapaisha‍unam ।
dayaa bhootEshhvalOlup‍tvaM maardavaM hreerachaapalam ॥ 2 ॥
tEjaH kshhamaa dhRRitiH shauchamadrOhO naatimaanitaa ।
bhavanti sampadaM daiveemabhijaatasya bhaarata ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning
shree-bhagavaan uvaaca — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; abhayam — fearlessness; sattva-saṁshuddhiH — purification of one’s existence; jjhNaana — in knowledge; yOga — of linking up; vyavasthitiH — the situation; daanam — charity; damaH — controlling the mind; ca — and; yajjhNaH — performance of sacrifice; ca — and; svaadhyaayaH — study of Vedic literature; tapaH — austerity; aarjavam — simplicity; ahiṁsaa — nonviolence; satyam — truthfulness; akrOdhaH — freedom from anger; tyaagaH — renunciation; shaantiH — tranquillity; apaishunam — aversion to fault-finding; dayaa — mercy; bhootEshhu — towards all living entities; alOluptvam — freedom from greed; maardavam — gentleness; hreeH — modesty; acaapalam — determination; tEjaH — vigor; kshhamaa — forgiveness; dhRRitiH — fortitude; shaucam — cleanliness; adrOhaH — freedom from envy; na — not; ati-maanitaa — expectation of honor; bhavanti — are; sampadam — the qualities; daiveem — the transcendental nature; abhijaatasya — of one who is born of; bhaarata — O son of Bharata.

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; renunciation; tranquillity; aversion to faultfinding; compassion for all living entities; freedom from covetousness; gentleness; modesty; steady determination; vigor; forgiveness; fortitude; cleanliness; and freedom from envy and from the passion for honor – these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.

dambhO darpO.abhimaanashcha krOdhaH paarushhyamEva cha ।
ajjhNaanaM chaabhijaatasya paartha sampadamaasureem ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning
dambhaH — pride; darpaH — arrogance; abhimaanaH — conceit; ca — and; krOdhaH — anger; paarushhyam — harshness; Eva — certainly; ca — and; ajjhNaanam — ignorance; ca — and; abhijaatasya — of one who is born of; paartha — O son of Pṛthā; sampadam — the qualities; aasureem — of the demoniac nature.

Translation
Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance – these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature, O son of Pṛthā.

shlOkaH
daivee sampadvimOkshhaaya nibandhaayaasuree mataa ।
maa sha‍uchaH sampadaM daiveemabhijaatO.asi paaNDava ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning
daivee — transcendental; sampat — assets; vimOkshhaaya — meant for liberation; nibandhaaya — for bondage; aasuree — demoniac qualities; mataa — are considered; maa — do not; shucaH — worry; sampadam — assets; daiveem — transcendental; abhijaataH — born of; asi — you are; paaNDava — O son of Pāṇḍu.

Translation
The transcendental qualities are conducive to liberation, whereas the demoniac qualities make for bondage. Do not worry, O son of Pāṇḍu, for you are born with the divine qualities.

shlOkaH
dvau bhootasargau lOkE.asmindaiva aasura Eva cha ।
daivO vistarashaH prOkta aasuraM paartha mE sha‍RRiNu ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning
dvau — two; bhoota-sargau — created living beings; lOkE — in the world; asmin — this; daivaH — godly; aasuraH — demoniac; Eva — certainly; ca — and; daivaH — the divine; vistarashaH — at great length; prOktaH — said; aasuram — the demoniac; paartha — O son of Pṛthā; mE — from Me; shRRiNu — just hear.

Translation
O son of Pṛthā, in this world there are two kinds of created beings. One is called divine and the other demoniac. I have already explained to you at length the divine qualities. Now hear from Me of the demoniac.

shlOkaH
pravRRittiM cha nivRRittiM cha janaa na viduraasuraaH ।
na shauchaM naapi chaachaarO na satyaM tEshhu vidyatE ॥ 7 ॥

Meaning
pravRRittim — acting properly; ca — also; nivRRittim — not acting improperly; ca — and; janaaH — persons; na — never; viduH — know; aasuraaH — of demoniac quality; na — never; shaucam — cleanliness; na — nor; api — also; ca — and; aacaaraH — behavior; na — never; satyam — truth; tEshhu — in them; vidyatE — there is.

Translation
Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them.

shlOkaH
asatyamapratishhThaM tE jagadaahuraneeshvaram ।
aparasparasambhootaM kimanyatkaamahaitukam ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning
asatyam — unreal; apratishhTham — without foundation; tE — they; jagat — the cosmic manifestation; aahuH — say; aneeshvaram — with no controller; aparaspara — without cause; sambhootam — arisen; kim anyat — there is no other cause; kaama-haitukam — it is due to lust only.

Translation
They say that this world is unreal, with no foundation, no God in control. They say it is produced of sex desire and has no cause other than lust.

shlOkaH
EtaaM dRRishhTimavashhTabhya nashhTaatmaanO.alpabuddhayaH ।
prabhavantyugrakarmaaNaH kshhayaaya jagatO.ahitaaH ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning
Etaam — this; dRRishhTim — vision; avashhTabhya — accepting; nashhTa — having lost; aatmaanaH — themselves; alpa-buddhayaH — the less intelligent; prabhavanti — flourish; ugra-karmaaNaH — engaged in painful activities; kshhayaaya — for destruction; jagataH — of the world; ahitaaH — unbeneficial.

Translation
Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world.

shlOkaH
kaamamaashritya dushhpooraM dambhamaanamadaanvitaaH ।
mOhaad‍gRRiheetvaasad‍graahaanpravartantE.asha‍uchivrataaH ॥ 10 ॥

Meaning
kaamam — lust; aashritya — taking shelter of; dushhpooram — insatiable; dambha — of pride; maana — and false prestige; mada-anvitaaH — absorbed in the conceit; mOhaat — by illusion; gRRiheetvaa — taking; asat — nonpermanent; graahaan — things; pravartantE — they flourish; ashuci — to the unclean; vrataaH — avowed.

Translation
Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent.

chintaamaparimEyaaM cha pralayaantaamupaashritaaH ।
kaamOpabhOgaparamaa Etaavaditi nishchitaaH ॥ 11 ॥
aashaapaashashatairbaddhaaH kaamakrOdhaparaayaNaaH ।
eehantE kaamabhOgaarthamanyaayEnaarthasanchayaan ॥ 12 ॥

Meaning
cintaam — fears and anxieties; aparimEyaam — immeasurable; ca — and; pralaya-antaam — unto the point of death; upaashritaaH — having taken shelter of; kaama-upabhOga — sense gratification; paramaaH — the highest goal of life; Etaavat — thus; iti — in this way; nishcitaaH — having ascertained; aashaa-paasha — entanglements in a network of hope; shataiH — by hundreds; baddhaaH — being bound; kaama — of lust; krOdha — and anger; paraayaNaaH — always situated in the mentality; eehantE — they desire; kaama — lust; bhOga — sense enjoyment; artham — for the purpose of; anyaayEna — illegally; artha — of wealth; sancayaan — accumulation.

Translation
They believe that to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification.

idamadya mayaa labdhamimaM praapsyE manOratham ।
idamasteedamapi mE bhavishhyati punardhanam ॥ 13 ॥
asau mayaa hataH shatrurhanishhyE chaaparaanapi ।
eeshvarO.ahamahaM bhOgee siddhO.ahaM balavaansukhee ॥ 14 ॥
aaDhyO.abhijanavaanasmi kO.anyO.asti sadRRishO mayaa ।
yakshhyE daasyaami mOdishhya ityajjhNaanavimOhitaaH ॥ 15 ॥

Meaning
idam — this; adya — today; mayaa — by me; labdham — gained; imam — this; praapsyE — I shall gain; manaH-ratham — according to my desires; idam — this; asti — there is; idam — this; api — also; mE — mine; bhavishhyati — it will increase in the future; punaH — again; dhanam — wealth; asau — that; mayaa — by me; hataH — has been killed; shatruH — enemy; hanishhyE — I shall kill; ca — also; aparaan — others; api — certainly; eeshvaraH — the lord; aham — I am; aham — I am; bhOgee — the enjoyer; siddhaH — perfect; aham — I am; bala-vaan — powerful; sukhee — happy; aaDhyaH — wealthy; abhijana-vaan — surrounded by aristocratic relatives; asmi — I am; kaH — who; anyaH — other; asti — there is; sadRRishaH — like; mayaa — me; yakshhyE — I shall sacrifice; daasyaami — I shall give charity; mOdishhyE — I shall rejoice; iti — thus; ajjhNaana — by ignorance; vimOhitaaH — deluded.

Translation
The demoniac person thinks: “So much wealth do I have today, and I will gain more according to my schemes. So much is mine now, and it will increase in the future, more and more. He is my enemy, and I have killed him, and my other enemies will also be killed. I am the lord of everything. I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest man, surrounded by aristocratic relatives. There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give some charity, and thus I shall rejoice.” In this way, such persons are deluded by ignorance.

shlOkaH
anEkachittavibhraantaa mOhajaalasamaavRRitaaH ।
prasaktaaH kaamabhOgEshhu patanti narakE.asha‍uchau ॥ 16 ॥

Meaning
anEka — numerous; citta — by anxieties; vibhraantaaH — perplexed; mOha — of illusions; jaala — by a network; samaavRRitaaH — surrounded; prasaktaaH — attached; kaama-bhOgEshhu — to sense gratification; patanti — they glide down; narakE — into hell; ashucau — unclean.

Translation
Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell.

shlOkaH
aatmasambhaavitaaH stabdhaa dhanamaanamadaanvitaaH ।
yajantE naamayajjhNaistE dambhEnaavidhipoorvakam ॥ 17 ॥

Meaning
aatma-sambhaavitaaH — self-complacent; stabdhaaH — impudent; dhana-maana — of wealth and false prestige; mada — in the delusion; anvitaaH — absorbed; yajantE — they perform sacrifice; naama — in name only; yajjhNaiH — with sacrifices; tE — they; dambhEna — out of pride; avidhi-poorvakam — without following any rules and regulations.

Translation
Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules or regulations.

shlOkaH
ahankaaraM balaM darpaM kaamaM krOdhaM cha saMshritaaH ।
maamaatmaparadEhEshhu pradvishhantO.abhyasooyakaaH ॥ 18 ॥

Meaning
ahankaaram — false ego; balam — strength; darpam — pride; kaamam — lust; krOdham — anger; ca — also; saṁshritaaH — having taken shelter of; maam — Me; aatma — in their own; para — and in other; dEhEshhu — bodies; pradvishhantaH — blaspheming; abhyasooyakaaH — envious.

Translation
Bewildered by false ego, strength, pride, lust and anger, the demons become envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and blaspheme against the real religion.

shlOkaH
taanahaM dvishhataH krooraansaMsaarEshhu naraadhamaan ।
kshhipaamyajasramasha‍ubhaanaasureeshhvEva yOnishhu ॥ 19 ॥

Meaning
taan — those; aham — I; dvishhataH — envious; krooraan — mischievous; saṁsaarEshhu — into the ocean of material existence; nara-adhamaan — the lowest of mankind; kshhipaami — I put; ajasram — forever; ashubhaan — inauspicious; aasureeshhu — demoniac; Eva — certainly; yOnishhu — into the wombs.

Translation
Those who are envious and mischievous, who are the lowest among men, I perpetually cast into the ocean of material existence, into various demoniac species of life.

shlOkaH
aasureeM yOnimaapannaa mooDhaa janmani janmani ।
maamapraapyaiva kauntEya tatO yaantyadhamaaM gatim ॥ 20 ॥

Meaning
aasureem — demoniac; yOnim — species; aapannaaH — gaining; mooDhaaH — the foolish; janmani janmani — in birth after birth; maam — Me; apraapya — without achieving; Eva — certainly; kauntEya — O son of Kuntī; tataH — thereafter; yaanti — go; adhamaam — condemned; gatim — destination.

Translation
Attaining repeated birth amongst the species of demoniac life, O son of Kuntī, such persons can never approach Me. Gradually they sink down to the most abominable type of existence.

shlOkaH
trividhaM narakasyEdaM dvaaraM naashanamaatmanaH ।
kaamaH krOdhastathaa lObhastasmaadEtat‍trayaM tyajEt ॥ 21 ॥

Meaning
tri-vidham — of three kinds; narakasya — of hell; idam — this; dvaaram — gate; naashanam — destructive; aatmanaH — of the self; kaamaH — lust; krOdhaH — anger; tathaa — as well as; lObhaH — greed; tasmaat — therefore; Etat — these; trayam — three; tyajEt — one must give up.

Translation
There are three gates leading to this hell – lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.

shlOkaH
EtairvimuktaH kauntEya tamOdvaaraistribhirnaraH ।
aacharatyaatmanaH shrEyastatO yaati paraaM gatim ॥ 22 ॥

Meaning
EtaiH — from these; vimuktaH — being liberated; kauntEya — O son of Kuntī; tamaH-dvaaraiH — from the gates of ignorance; tribhiH — of three kinds; naraH — a person; aacarati — performs; aatmanaH — for the self; shrEyaH — benediction; tataH — thereafter; yaati — he goes; paraam — to the supreme; gatim — destination.

Translation
The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, O son of Kuntī, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination.

shlOkaH
yaH shaastravidhimutsRRijya vartatE kaamakaarataH ।
na sa siddhimavaap‍nOti na sukhaM na paraaM gatim ॥ 23 ॥

Meaning
yaH — anyone who; shaastra-vidhim — the regulations of the scriptures; utsRRijya — giving up; vartatE — remains; kaama-kaarataH — acting whimsically in lust; na — never; saH — he; siddhim — perfection; avaapnOti — achieves; na — never; sukham — happiness; na — never; paraam — the supreme; gatim — perfectional stage.

Translation
He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.

shlOkaH
tasmaachChaastraM pramaaNaM tE kaaryaakaaryavyavasthitau ।
jjhNaatvaa shaastravidhaanOktaM karma kartumihaarhasi ॥ 24 ॥

Meaning
tasmaat — therefore; shaastram — the scriptures; pramaaNam — evidence; tE — your; kaarya — duty; akaarya — and forbidden activities; vyavasthitau — in determining; jjhNaatvaa — knowing; shaastra — of scripture; vidhaana — the regulations; uktam — as declared; karma — work; kartum — do; iha — in this world; arhasi — you should.

Translation
One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated.
